I think 3k is a very low estimate IMO.

I'm talking a first timer, cutting costs and trying to just make it happen. Assuming you can average $500 a scene for talent, either $400 to the girl and $100 to the guy or whatever can be agreed upon. Then you can rent a camera package for 1 day, they usually give the weekend for free, so you rent Friday and return it Monday, you can get a package for around $500 or less for one day or find a camera man with equipment to do your weekend shoot for $500, using friends and volunteers from craigslist for crew. Have someone on set to take stills for the cover art. Edit it yourself and do the cover art yourself in photoshop. Girls/Guys 4 x $500 = $2,000 1 Day (weekend) camera package = $500 --- In the can for around $2,500. Then you got to distribute it. Going the ultimate cheapo route, you could buy some waterproof DVD-rs that basically absorb and protect the writing on the disc better so the ink doesn't smear. I've seen them go for around $60 for 100. Given they are DVD-rs, you can note on the package it's on DVD-rs and maybe provide a slight price cut. So you save money on mastering and so does the customer. You can print and sleave them for around $1 a case. Shrinkwrap them and send them out to online sellers or drop ship through various channels, or sell through your website for those that don't want the online subscription. So as far as printing DVDs, no need to overprint. Could start with a small run at around $500 to see if there is any interest in the DVD product, using any money made to print more DVDs as demand increases. Total estimated cost, $3,000.
