Being a long-time porn consumer, something that always confused me was the meaning of "couples porn."

For me, porn is being nasty: close-ups of body openings, an doing all sorts of things to girls, none of us would dare ask our girlfriends to consider.

Hence, we call it porn; an escape, if you will, from the reality of our drab sex lives.

Secondly, I've yet to date a woman who actually enjoys porn; now, I'm sure there are chicks who enjoy soft core stuff, but PORN?

In short, isn't the whole idea of "couples porn" really just a ploy to make porn more marketable to the mainstream?

I'm sure this has been discussed a million times....

I think I'll just tiptoe away quietly and let DB, lindi, heaven, lunacy, SueR, et al have this all to themselves. MAO

It has been discussed a million times, but that doesn't mean it's not worthy of a little more discussion... :)

I think the traditional term "couples porn" is a bit on the silly side, yes. I think it would be more appropriately phrased, "soft and happy porn" or something similar for lack of a better term. I mean, that's not a fair term either really--but that's really the crux of the question. What exactly would you call it?

That said though, REAL couples porn is all over the map, is as varied as porn itself, and depends on the indivudual couple that watches it. "Couples porn" to one couple might be boring and empty to another, and "couples porn" to another couple might be way too shocking to others. On the other hand, it is ... helpful to do a bit of a generic classification for "couples porn" when you're talking about appealing to couples who are inexperienced in watching porn together. To me, the couples porn genre as it's traditionally defined, is a starting point. Finding what appeals to you and your significant other beyond that is completely individual and it could be as hard and crazy as Fashionistas, or as soft and erotic as Andrew Blake. It just depends.

One more thing, you might not have met any of them, but there are a fair amount women out there who like porn... yes PORN. My wife is one of them, and enjoys stuff that is often harder and more intense than even I tend to like (and that's saying something...). A number of female posters here very much like porn of all varieties, from Heaven who likes it hard and intense, to SueR who can't do without a good sloppy facial in her porn, to Dumblonde who likes hardcore intensity without roughness or degredation, to Yogagrrl who has her own individual variety driven tastes. Women who watch porn are as varied as the men who watch it, and believe me... they are out there. The unfortunate thing is that I believe in most cases it's harder for women to find something to like about porn because most of it is truly geared toward men in a variety of ways.

That's my take on it. And just to stick one more bit of clarification in, "couples porn" as we use it here on ADT in the Lighter Side forum is loosely following that traditional definition I described earlier. We're all aware that couples porn is largely defined by the individual couple, but the idea is to discuss those movies that would ideally have a very large appeal to the traditionally defined couples market, and this forum (not the lighter side) is a more appropriate place to debate the "couples porn" definition, so I thank you 2Big for asking this question in this forum. :) It's a good question to explore and is worthy of some good discussion I think!

Anyone else have some thoughts?

Well you don't know the right ladies, cause lots of the ones I know, love porn, whether its soft, hard or down right NASTY! And any woman that is not into being nasty with their man needs dumping big time!

Well, my sex life isn't drab, and we like to watch porn together. The sex in most of the 'couples porn' tends to be too boring with way too much fake lesbian stuff. Everyone's tastes are all over the map. My (and my wife's) definition for what couples porn should be doesn't fit the currently defined standard. She like's hot, all hetero action and spare the story line please (as it's usually lame). That works for me too.

I don't think the term 'couples porn' is a condradiction in terms as much a ploy, and really means "you MIGHT be able to get your girlfriend to watch this with you because there's a few lines of dialogue thrown in". I agree the term is imperfect and too generic, but I certainly don't agree that ALL porn must be just nasty to be any good.

Not all men or women are alike, and not all people have boring or non-existant sexlives, some just like to watch a little porn now and then. Not everyone needs to see extreme or real nasty stuff to get aroused. What we really need is more VARIETY, not less.

Contrary to popular belief, a lot of women like porn. My current GF does and my last one did too. The issue is that most women don't like the type of porn that's produced. Around here, and in most reviews in general, "couples porn" is used as a euphemism for "this movie sucks..." or "the sex was so lame even the director fell asleep...". Read every review for every dull, lifeless flick and likely you'll see "suitable for couples..." pop up somewhere in the text. That's especially true for Vivid and Wicked flicks where the reviewer was left limp and went running for the "couples" cliche. Meanwhile, you read the scene list and of the 5 scenes in the movie, 2 are girl-girl, one is solo girl masturbation and the other 2 are some contract girl looking at her watch hoping the scene ends soon so she can pick up her check.

Speaking on behalf of my current GF, my ex and every other female I know that's both into porn and part of a heterosexual couple, women don't like that garbage. Most women are not into G/G, they're not into watching other women masturbate, they're not into 5-somes, choking or degradation. The sex doesn't have to be lame and dull, it just needs to accomodate the fact that what turns on a women is NOT what turns on the typical male porn viewer. Women want seduction, women want fantasy, women like b/g scenes without other women popping over to borrow a cup of sugar and deciding to strap on a 12" dildo to join the action. Women want the girls on screen to at least look like they're having a good time, not punching the clock. Women want a few more full body shots and fewer closeups that only a gynacologist could love. Women don't want ANYTHING that's typically depicted in any movie reviewed with the phrase "couples movie" mentioned anywhere in the review.

There should be a law that anyone doing a review that uses the word "couples" must prove that they're part of a couple and that their significant other found the film appropriate. We should give every reviewer a thesaurus so that they can find another way of saying "I was bored" or "damn that sucked!!!" without falling back on "couples movie".

Thank you Vroomfondel!

Your take on this is so perceptive and we (my wife and I) 100% agree.

That's quite generally true for us as well. Though we find the occasional feature or classic to be good. For instance, we both enjoyed Bad Habits.

The main reason that couples porn (or any porn) is unappealing to females is the lack of attractive guys who appear to be at all interested in the female's pleasure.
