I was wondering why this vital information was so often overlooked in a review, be it favorable or not. Listing the studio is mandatory, but most studios put out such a wide range in terms of quality of product, that usually the only reliable indicator you have to go by is the director.
Very often the director isn't even listed on the title itself, and there's a good reason for that. This omission alone is indicative of the caliber, as well as when a director will use a nom de plume.
I appreciate it when someone works hard to create a superior product, and think it's only fair to credit the person responsible. After all, even a flick with a cast list that reads like a wet dream can suck in the hands of a lousy director.
This has been a pet peeve of mine for some time, but because I have so many, it wasn't until I read AlexGogol's excellent review of Babes Illustrated # 10 that I decided to speak up. The author obviously enjoyed the movie and gave it high marks - which makes it all the more puzzling why Mike Quasar wasn't credited. I liked reading his review, and think the author has taste and talent. He certainly isn't the only one to neglect this information, and it isn't mandatory, but let's give credit (as well as blame) where it's due!
Thanks,
DB

DB, a great point. Directors should be credited whenever possible, as they help shape the vision of what we see. I make a point to include this info in my own VHS reviews, but can't recall now if I have included it in the (very) few DVD's I've done.

I agree that directors (& possibly also videographers) should be credited in reviews. I'd also like to be able to search the database of all DVDs by director and/or videographer in addition to title, cast members, studio & genre. Many producers & studios are so prolific with so much crap that knowing the director is often (usually?) a better indicator than the cast list of quality product or lack thereof. Likewise, there are videographers who consistently produce superior product and others who seem not to give a damn as long at the money shot is reproduced three times in slow motion.

You have a good point there DB, I think in the few reviews I have done I have said who the director was maybe a couple of times. If I haven't I probably made the assumption if say it was a Down the Hatch movie I figured everyone knew that Mike John does those or if it was say Nice Rack 6 that Vince Voyeur does that line but I will try and make an effort in the future to mention the director. I know that in the review for Island Fever I did I mentioned that I thought the director was the other voice on the commentary track but wasn't sure plus this guys name was different starting with a J but it was one word. Anyway thanks for the post DB.

I agree that the Director should be named. Some of the time, a director isn't named in the movie credits or on the packaging (not generally a good sign), but calls to the production company, emails, or even using the IAFD as a source can help. Metro is one of the big offenders in regards to crediting the director but Mike (ie: Mike Quasar) told me that he has been their primary cameraman for a long time. That many of the directors were not always on the set of his movies made him the de facto director as well.

I hope reviewers will include cast, director, and some other factual data in their reviews if only because I will have to do it myself if I'm interested in a movie they recommend.

Bono, not everyone follows the many porn series out there. I've never watched a Down The Hatch dvd (yet) so I wouldn't know who directed it unless told and I'm considered to have watched a few porno's in my time...

Why not make it easy (& operate as a reminder) by amending your review template so that Director, Videographer &ampare fill-in-the-blank text box items like your rating category items? If the information is unknown the reviewer can always enter 'not credited' in the blank. Another bit of information that might be useful is the original release date (year) as many (most?) DVDs are re-releases of earlier videotape versions.

Gay, I don't think videographer is as much a big deal as cast & director. I think cast members are a primary (if not sole) consideration for many people with director being a distant, distant second but you're the first person I've ever heard ask for that one. I think a more comprehensive template might include a space for director, cast, length, and date of production (although, DOP varies a lot-box/credits/copyright/ending credits/etc) but before adding every possible tidbit of info, we need to look at the big picture. I, for one, want to encourage others to review movies. By adding more detailed information than many companies even provide, you run the risk of scaring off reviewers. If you look at the reviews on ADT, what percent are written by the top 10 most productive writers currently? I think your request does make for a good poll question though. How's that sound?

PS: not as a requirement for a review in any case.

Good point Houston and like I said I will try to name the director when I do future reviews. Well when you do finally view a Down the Hatch I would suggest starting off with #2 which stars Alana, Mirage, and Daniella Rush along with some other very cute ladies, also #4 and #5 are very good and the latest #6 is only on vhs now but it stars Aurora Snow, Scottie Andrews, and Sunrise Adams so it will be one to see when it makes it to dvd.

That sounds like a great idea.

I have a limited perspective of the porno video world - that of gay videos. In the 'gay' world, producer/director can often be more important than cast or studio. As examples, the work of George DuRoy and Kristen Bjorn are consistently good to excellent whereas the work of Robert Prion is consistently mediocre to putrid, at least in my opinion. Another important example in the 'gay' genre is Matt Sterling, who is producing fairly good videos using unknown eastern European casts but his name is seldom 'searchable' making it difficult to find his videos without a lot of research headaches. Anyway, in the reviews I post, I will include directors so readers will eventually get the picture that I dislike certain directors and like others.

I agree that videographer is less important so maybe that's overkill (although, again, there are videographers in the 'gay' porno realm who do excellent work and others who can do little more than aim a camera at cock). I guess that the 'Audio/Video' quality rating box is really enough.

Running time & DOP are both useful bits of information. Running time is easy with DVDs; DOP is more problematic although the copyright date is probably a good indication and is usually a part of the credits somewhere on the video.

And certainly, I think that this additional information could be optional so that it would not discourage reviewers.

As someone who has always credited directors, both in my adult and mainstream reviews, I also like to know who is responsible for the creative direction of the movie. But I recognize that there are a lot of difficulties in identifying the people involved in the project (including the talent), so I'm not as critical about that.

I also think that it's quite possible to write a review without mentioning a lot of details, especially a consumer review. After all, the most important information that can be included is "did I like the movie and why?" The production information and technical details are less important.

Finally, porn has always been a thankless occupation. There's no residual structure, frequently incorrect crediting, and the like. It's never been a priority for the studios nor the professional reviewers and advertisers.

I agree with all that's been said, but just wanted to say that, at least in my opinion, in the grand scheme of things I don't think it's a fault if a reviewer doesn't credit the people who made the video or a slight to those who are responsible for it.

After all, I can write an informative opinion on "Jurassic Park III" without having to mention that Joe Johnston directed it, Peter Buchman, Alexander Payne, and Jim Taylor wrote it, Kathleen Kennedy and Larry Franco produced it, and Stephen Spielberg was the Executive Producer. Would it even be necessary to note that it was produced by Amblin Entertainment and distributed by Universal Pictures?

In both mainstream and porn, knowing the director, writer, producer, studio, etc. is pretty important to me-mainly because I'm so interested in films and cinematography.
I sometimes make the mistake of seeing a movie on the strength of a director's previous movies (was very disappointed in Unbreakable after The Sixth Sense.)
I usually know what to expect from a Dimension Film.

The same can often be said for a porn movie. Fans usually know what to expect when Jim Holliday directs a movie for VCA. And avid pornophiles may be able to spot a Nic Andrews or Michael Ninn special effect at a glance.

For mainstream, I just watched the DVD of Scream 3, and it was nice to know ahead of time that it was directed by Wes Craven but that Kevin Williamson was still involved in the writing.
I've stopped going to the theatre to see any big-budget movie that Jerry Bruckheimer has ANYTHING to do with.
I do have several directors that I will pretty much go to see anything they direct. I also expect certain things from a couple of cinematographers and composers.

For porn, I follow directors a lot. For instance, I liked Jean Yves LeCastel's directing more when he did the Assman series for Anabolic than I like his current stuff. I also liked his directing of the series much more than his successors.
The same with series' like Cumback Pussy with Tom Byron vs. CP with Dion.
With Jules Jordan, I mostly prefer his Bottom Feeders series over his other ones. He seems to keep his best scenes for that series.
Anyway, I ramble a lot after a beer or two. Sorry, y'all!

Absolutely! I think that those who care about such things will go out of their way to do research about the production crew. But my experience is that a vast majority of adult viewers are not pornophiles. They follow stars, not directors. It's more important to them that Jenna appears in a picture than Brad Armstrong directed it or whether it's a Wicked or Vivid production.

Porn reviews are not junior high book reports -- I'll forgive someone for not attributing if they can put together a decent opinion on the movie. After all, it's not a chore to go to IAFD or click twice to hit a retailer that lists them. If they list those details in the body of the review, more power to them.

Tricia, what do you mean about LeCastel not directing the Assman series anymore? The series is up to #17, and I have seen up through #16, and he is definitely directing that one. No one else can carry on such inane but endearing chatter with his performers all through every scene ;-)
I thought #16 was one of his best, he found energetic performers, including several who went on to star in the awesome first scene of Rocco's True Anal Stories 14. I did think LeCastel hit a lull from roughly Assman 8-11. But it picked up with #12, and 14 and 15 were also good (never saw #13).

I'd agree that too many credits or details can bog down what should be enjoyable both for the writer and reader, and I personally don't care who produced or wrote it, but I think a director plays a much more integral role in the project.
Because opinions are so subjective, they are less important to me ~ at least until I'm familiar with and confident that the reviewer's opinions are similar to my own.
At any rate, it was just a suggestion ~ I get irritated when I have to go somewhere else to try and find this basic information, and more often than not, the online store won't list the director either. The same holds true for the running length of the title.
That said, I still appreciate all the good reviews, and enjoy reading them for all the different writing styles.

Well, DB, not that my review category is of much interest to you, but I've altered one of the review templates provided by ADT to suit my own needs. It includes lots of detail such as director, running time & production date in a fill-in-the-blank format, making it really easy for me to include such detail if it is easily available.

Sez who?

Glad to hear it, GaySatyr, I'm sure it will be appreciated by the readers. Especially since, as you've
pointed out, the price of gay dvd's is more than double what straight product is. At $50. a pop,
people have to shop carefully, and know as much as they can about what they're getting.

I got a password!! This is very exciting. I feel like a member of some secret porn cabal.
Anyway, regarding a director's credit or lack thereof in porn movies... it has been my experience that because so much porn is treated simply as "product", great care is not given to providing the pertinent details regarding production. This is not just an oversight of the various companies. Sometimes it's by choice. Low budget crap duplicated on to low grade videotape and stuffed into a box isn't something that a lot of people want credit for. I have "directed" many movies over the years that I felt were of such little consequence that a credit was unneccesary. You will never see a Michael Ninn movie or a James Avalon movie go uncredited but you might see a movie shot by a meth addict in a Motel 6 go uncredited.
Special thanks to whoever reviewed Babes Illustrated 10. Most other reviews for this movie have been terrible due to it's being "Slick" and "Glossy". I happen to like slick and glossy. I suppose that I could have shot it under harsh lighting with a camcorder set to auto-focus and then had the girls sodomize each other with diseased possums if I really wanted to get universal praise for my film making skills but I have a weak stomach and a conscience.
Have a nice day.

Mike,
Is it really you? If so, let me be the first to say welcome, and if you think you're excited, imagine how I feel!

Thanks for that, and for your input regarding the credits.
I hope you grace us with your unique perspective as often as
possible ~ we may not be quite as exciting as Luke's group, but we're pretty low maintenance.

Not very likely. Possum sex is too mild for the guys at Extreme.

you're absolutely right! (I need to stop posting in the middle of the night!) I meant to say that I like his Assman stuff better than his other stuff. As far as the series he's not doing anymore, is that Debauchery?

Yep, but I don't care. He was cool when he liked the Silver Surfer. Now he has to pay to bang Julia Roberts and trades his shoes for bullets in China.
