Hi Everyone,
I love the ADT forum and post here from time to time. While it's a shock to no one that porn is definitely hurting on a whole, not much is stopping what appears to be a continuous slump. Surprisingly, despite many posts on what to do, more fan loyalty, etc. the one thing that I haven't seen properly discussed is the concept of crowd funding for porn.
It's been applied to lots of indie films, and I wonder why the concept hasn't really carried over to porn yet. In a nutshell, and in the context of adult films, crowd funding would work by coming up with the concept for the movie, marketing it, and getting funders (the crowd) putting $$ behind it. When the final product is complete, everyone is paid, and the crowd reaps the benefit. The imporant thing to note is that funders get a say in what the final product/scene will look like.
So posts on ADT may change from: "When is Julez Ventura going to get gangbanged??" to "Julez we want a gangbang. Will you do it, what would you need, and how would you like it done?" (By the way Jules you are my favourite :) If crowd funding takes off in porn, the funds for a JV Gangbang will probably be raised faster that money to support your local orphanage...sad, but very true ;) Thousands of funders would very likely put a bit of their hard earned cash into a Julez Ventura project bringing their sordid fanstasies to full HD reality.
However, I do wonder if Survey Moneky would permit polls with questions like: "Should Julez lick the cum off of mirror or swallow it in a big gup?" LOL :)
I'll be the first to admit alot simpler said than done, and it will probably change the dynamics of the industry (which is why I guess the shift hasn't happened yet), but I think it's a great way to get more deserving adult film stars, directors, etc. back on their feet, or prada boots, whatever... LOL.
Like cam girls who will put on show doing everything YOU SPECIFICALLY want (that they'll agree to ;) for the right incentives, I see a parallel happening with pornstars. While in some ways similar to stars having their own websites, crowd funding has the definite potential to raise greater revenue, and allow more flexible collaborations with higher quality scenes.
Satisfying my own curiosity, and on behalf of the general porn fan community, I would sincerely like to know what all the terrific stars (like Juelz ;) and awesome directors (like Mike John and Princess Donna:) on ADT think?? Do you think crowd funding is the way to go?
For Princess Donna specifically (if you'll be so kind ;) - With Kink.com (and Bound Gangbangs :) being one of the rare and major exceptions to buck the current downward trend in porn (especially since you take your members comments seriously), do you still see a possibility to incorporate crownd funding into what you do?
Thanks!
Henry
p.s. Good article about Kink.com's founder Peter Acworth - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/21/kinkcom_n_1904626.html

To me, the biggest issue when it comes to crowd funding porn is the simple fact of how many disparate tastes you'd have to consider. Especially if allow the backers to choose all the different aspects of the scene, you're going to end up trying to please 100 (or more) people who all have different tastes, which would probably mean, in the end, that you're going to have some people contribute to a scene that they aren't going to like because some of the decisions went against them. To use your Juelz gangbang example, you have to decide how many guys you want in it (3? 4? 7?). Some people aren't going to like some of the male performers that get chosen. Some people may want a DP, some might not (that's probably less likely). Some people might want her to start in a specific outfit, some might want her to start fully naked. Stockings or no stockings? Creampie or not? Swallow or not? Which positions should we use, and how long should we stay in them?
And let's not even get started on how to weigh how much you contribute to the project determining how much of a say you should have in it. Should the person that contributed $20 have just as much power as the person that contributed $200? What about $1000?
Even with everything I just said, I generally really like the idea of crowd funding. I just think it works better when the person looking for funding lays out the specifics, and has control over most of the smaller details (leaving a few details to the backers is a good idea to drive interest). Basically, the person looking for funding saying this is what I want to shoot this type of scene with these specific people, and would you be willing to pay to fund this scene, as opposed to the more nebulous "I want to shoot a gangbang with this girl" scenario.

Just a point , if I fund a scene do I have to buy it?
so if the funders are also the customers and major fan of the stars involved , who would buy such movies?

You don't have to buy it, technically, but then why would you be funding it if you didn't? You're not gonna be able to get your money back if you fund it and it goes in a different direction from what you wanted. If we use Kickstarter as the template for this type of thing, most of the time the basic reward for funding a project is the receipt of the end result of said project. More money donated can get you more (and better) rewards, but it usually starts at that.
And the supposed beauty of crowdfunding is that because you didn't actually pay to produce the scene/movie (the crowdfunding took care of that), and copies of it that you sell would become profit. And if you raise more money than you need for the scene, you don't really have to give that back, either.

Don't get me wrong I like the idea , but if those willing to buy actually fund it , considering the low sales of today , who will buy the DVDs?
will they be enough to provide true earnings?
