I dug around in some of my DVDs and came up with a few Cleo Edwards (aka Paul Thomas) titles from the early 2000s that I kinda liked---Sordid and Busted. Sordid is the best of the two; however, Busted is pretty strange with Raylene playing a lonely cellist spying on her wacky neighbor Tony Tedeschi. That flick might have worked with a better class of actors but I liked what it tried to do.
I guess more popular responses would be stuff like The Seven Deadly Sins, those Fade to Black flicks, those Bad Wives flicks and Borderline.

I find this harder to say with Vivid particularly because it is traditionally such a star-driven studio. I don't know that it's "crucial" that anyone see Sex and Sex 2, but it is fairly crucial to see Nikki Dial. I can take or leave The Awakening, but Kobe Tai should be seen in something.
Also, while I've always been contrarian when it comes to the Vivid-bashing that was epidemic when I was around here more, I don't have a lot of love for a lot of individual movies. Especially when technical shortcomings of the discs work against so many of them, such as Fade to Black or Pretty Girl.
I'm curious why you ask. Are you asking literally, as in what are the canon titles people generally think of, such as Bad Wives and Bobby Sox and The Masseuse? Or do you just want our recommendations? And with a studio with such a long history, you will probably end up hearing a list that's either way too short to cover what's significant, or way too long and unwieldy to be practical.
Anyway, good luck with this one.

She's asking because of a conversation we had a couple weeks back regarding the best/most significant narrative films produced by Vivid.
Just trying to gauge what titles people think are their finest work/most in need of preservation.

There is a subtle distinction between "finest" and "exemplary".
For instance, I was never a fan of Ginger Lynn, and I don't know that any of her titles were among Vivid's finest, but if you were looking for exemplars, you would need a Ginger Lynn title, as she was their first contract girl, and the whole contract system was built on the success of the Ginger Lynn/Vivid contract.
Looking for exemplars instead of "fine" works might help focus your thinking. You are no longer looking at the whole Vivid catalogue. Instead, you can focus on Paul Thomas, and choose two or three of his works, then turn to Tristan Taormino, then Axel Braun, etc..
You would also need to think about what you want examples of. For instance, Christy Canyon was for a time a Vivid contract girl, but she was already past her prime. For this reason, I might not look for an example of her contract work, but when looking elsewhere (Maybe "Where the Boys Aren't") I would seek out a title that featured her.
That said, I'd like to mention two titles that might otherwise escape your notice: "Throat" starring Sasha Grey and directed by Paul Thomas, and "Kimberly Kane's been Blackmaled", starring and directed by Kimberly Kane.

^ I agree. I almost mentioned it as an obvious choice, but was trying to focus on how to find the not-so-obvious choices.

I would like to hear all the choices, obvious and otherwise. I'm a bit surprised no one has added a lengthy list of titles yet.
So, I will add the ones I know of that I think are canonical or worthy of preservation:
Cry Wolf
Throat: A Cautionary Tale
Debbie Does New Orleans
Jekyll and Hyde
Awakening
The Masseuse
Fade to Black

I decided to follow up on the idea of seeing what the market is ready to pay for. Adultdvdmarketplace let's you search by studio. I searched Vivid, but to do this completely, you would also need to search "Vivid Alt" "Vivid Wave" etc. They you can list them by price.
Admittedly, this is going to turn up out-of-print titles, but it will zero in on those out-of-print titles that people aren't willing to sell, and that other people are willing to pay for.
VIvid titles listed by price
I've never seen "Country Comfort" starring former Vivid and DP contract girl, Devon, but I note that someone is asking 170.99 for a new copy.
Of course, it would be very costly to determine which of these high-priced titles merit inclusion in the list. But some of the posters on this board have a large collection of vivid titles, and others might be able to stream them. In which case looking at the market in old porn might provide some guidance.

I have to agree with ObiBong.
Sex and Sex 2 are must-haves.

^ Malice wasn't made by Vivid, I don't think. They just agreed to distribute it in the States.
