And when people stay unemployed for a long time, then they drop out of the labor market completely. I'd say that the problem is so called networking. That's how a lot of the employment system works in USA. People need to have social connections to get employment, including in the porn industry. And of course, people tend to socialize with those who are like them in culture, race, and education. They keep recommending each other and helping each other, while not including those who are different from them. Which puts those who are different from them at such a big disadvantage that they aren't able to get work anymore and for this reason, they leave the profession. An employment system that depends on social networking is a system that excludes everyone who is different from the majority group in the profession. And that's what makes the whole profession become more homogeneous over time. And this isn't just my idea. A recent review of scientific research on discrimination in USA has found that "Favoritism, not hostility, causes most discrimination". Favoritism is exactly how networking in the labor market works. People who know each other are doing favors for each other, and not going out of their way to do favors for strangers who are different from the rest. Which ends up excluding these strangers, when virtually everybody in the majority group does this.
