I think it might be a figment of your imagination.

You might never see them again. For over a decade now, it's rarely meant anything meaningful for their careers and in most cases, what it has meant is a sharp decrease in the winner's visibility and amount of work. Winning Best New Starlet has all but guaranteed that the lady who takes home the trophy will do everything short of disappear in the coming year and make their fans damn-near forget who they even were the previous year. Their career will stagnate if not outright die and in some cases, when the performer does grace us with their presence, there is often no semblance of the performer we fell in love with in front of the camera; there's a noticeable decline in performance energy and/or intensity. To wit, no one who has won Best New Starlet has ever gone on to become Female Performer of the Year (with the exception of Missy, who took home both trophies in '97). In the past five years alone, we've all been privvy to what I mention above. Only Violet Blue, more or less, managed to dodge the hex. For the sake of brevity, I'll assume we all already know what happened to Tera Patrick, Jenna Haze, Stormy and Cytherea after their wins. It begs the question: what can we expect from our reigning Best New Starlet, who probably had the least amount of hardcore performances under her belt than any other nominee OR winner in the past by the time she won this honor and is ALREADY under contract? Has winning Best New Starlet become an unavoidable jinx and the Kiss of Death for one's career? Or is it that because so much attention is focused on them, our expectations are unreasonably raised? I think it's obvious that this phenomena is not a figment of our imaginations. But what are the reasons behind it? Edited by - Crucifixio_Jones on Apr 15 2006 [Link] |

| Crucifixio_Jones Senior Member Arrogant & Obnoxious Narcissist 4727 Posts 10/03 | But even if you disagree with me about Stormy (who admittedly, since she too was already a contract star, her star has yet to dim considerably because, honestly, she never did a whole helluva lot anyway) you can't say that, concerning everyone else, this is all in my mind. |
| ObiBong Senior Member 1162 Posts 12/02 | I won't even address the typical contract-bashing. I've given up on arguing here about whether that's "never doing a lot" or not. As for the others, they don't have a lot in common as far as why gonzo-only fans might not be pleased with their careers. The one similarity in those situations, if I'm to believe my online porn gossip, would just be the word: "Boyfriend." Maybe that's the curse. Edited by - obibong on 4/15/2006 6:32:04 PM |

I'm just not the BIGGEST, as evidenced by Obi's responses. Seems we've been derailed a little by Obi's rampant Stormy-backing, even though, it might be impossible to derail a thread with only two participants. | Crucifixio_Jones Senior Member Arrogant & Obnoxious Narcissist 4727 Posts 10/03 | Just so, once again, I'm not pegged as some sort of Stormy-hater, I have the poster for "Secrets of the Velvet Ring" directly in front of me, above my computer monitor (and it's been there a while). Swear to God. If one were to do a search here for instances that I've mentioned "Stormy" since I've been a member, they'd find nothing but glowing comments (even going so far as to root for/predict Stormy's infiltration of "mainstream" America). Kami - I think most people share your line of thinking. Stormy aside, I still think I had a point but this thread is on its way to a miserable death, isn't it? Fuck. | stormydaniels Member 171 Posts 3/04 | I'm not sure if the award goes to the winner's head and they overcharge, hence cutting their work. Maybe they worked so hard to get the trophy that they think they can sit back and rest...and we all know that the second we take a breath or get lazy, another girl is waiting to swoop in. There's not a lot of time for us in this business and I don't know how many girls realize it until it is too late. It's all about maximizing it while you can (without managing to get over-shot, develop some sort of addiction like drugs or even shopping, or just get annoying). I'm confident in saying that I really feel I beat "the curse", but then again I'm spending an average of four nights a month in my own bed...maybe a curse in itself...hhmmm... Anyway, my whole point is that mostly I agree with the thread. My only issue is that I didn't stop working. I actually work more each month than I did the month before. Part of my "contract status" involves lots of traveling for appearances (store signings, hosting, dance bookings, meeting with distributors) and that is what I find most exhausting. |
| Crucifixio_Jones Senior Member Arrogant & Obnoxious Narcissist 4727 Posts 10/03 | Stormy - *backpeddling and apologizing AGAIN* Understand I wasn't trying to slight you in any way. As an exclusive contract star for Wicked, you're in a unique position. Unfortunately, sometimes not all of the work someone puts in finds its way into consumers hands in a timely manner. And perception is reality to fans. If you worked on 12 movies in a year, directed 5 and wrote 10 but yet only 4 made it to shelves...that's all they have to go on. And that's not even taking into account the store signings, party appearances, movie cameos, meetings, dance dates, etc. that you mention. Fans simply don't SEE all the work you put in. And that's really what this was all about: why don't fans SEE a girl as much after her win. As an aside, I hope you did a search for my posts about you. There are some really nice things said that you definitely deserve to see and some that rubbed some other folks the wrong way (more to do with the way I chose to say what I said than anything about you, though). I guess my intention with this thread (which was half-intended to be semi-humorous...coincidentally named after a Stormy-less Wicked release) was to point out that like the Sports Illustrated cover "curse", maybe the trophy/honor itself isn't to blame but one can't deny the parallels and strange coincidences that most of the winners share. Stormy's friend had every right to be leery of her winning even if she managed to thwart the whammy. Edited by - Crucifixio_Jones on 4/17/2006 10:29:33 AM |

I would assume that many of the women regularly dissapear/leave the biz/not work as much after winning because they've ran out of work due to working so much in a short period of time; that they eventually run out of things to shoot for while new series haven't been created yet. It's just an assumption from a gonzo/non-contract performers perspective. *This opinion doesn't really apply to sexy Stormy or any other contract girl. |

| Crucifixio_Jones Senior Member Arrogant & Obnoxious Narcissist 4727 Posts 10/03 | This goes back to something I said in my initial post and I wanted to pose this question specifically to Stormy since she's a past Best New Starlet winner but I'll ask everyone: Is there an active Best New Starlet winner that you think could go on to eventually capture Female Performer of the Year? It still has never happened. |

| stormydaniels Member 171 Posts 3/04 | I think it would be incredibly pretentious of me to suggest that I would have a chance at winning it. Although I work very hard and always try to do good scenes, I just don't think I do enough of them to compete with the performers (or athletes, if you will) who work everyday. I spend most of my time on the creative side by writing and directing. Those aren't the basis for Performer of the Year. Which is fine by me...I have my eye on a future Director of the Year trophy to go with my screenplay one :) |

Stormy is today a much bigger star than she was the day she won the award. I'm pretty sure this would all also have happened if she hadn't won the award. |
| TheLoneGunman Member 400 Posts 10/03 | Your post really makes no sense...of the five gals mentioned, Violet Blue is probably the LEAST known or popular among current porn fans. Tera Patrick, Jenna Haze, Stormy and Cytherea are all pretty much "household" names among raincoaters and porn viewers. So while you may not personally like the work they are putting out, they all have done pretty well career-wise. |
| Crucifixio_Jones Senior Member Arrogant & Obnoxious Narcissist 4727 Posts 10/03 | TheLoneGunman - My post makes plenty of sense. I talk about the amount of work one continues to do after they win, not their level of popularity. So while Violet Blue is, in fact, probably the least-known of the names I mentioned, she is the only one whose "workrate" per se, didn't dip. Everyone else took a break after their win for whatever reason. And that has ZERO to do with how much I personally enjoy the work they put in. I've never said who I do or don't like. But you raise an interesting point: while Violet continued to work like mad after her win, she still enjoys less popularity than the girls who didn't. So it can be said that staying busy doesn't always win you more fans. Edited by - Crucifixio_Jones on 4/20/2006 4:48:54 PM |
| juha Senior Member 2752 Posts 3/05 | Blame my lack of the English language. But as I understand the level of popularity has a lot to do with the career.

| quarrion Member SYD 26 Posts 4/06 | Great theory and something that bugged me for a considerable amount of time. As I never understood the mechanism on how the awards are actully assigned, I used to blame it to be a pure marketing instrument to have a good star whose popularity might be fading called back into the fans' radar. But reading the input of the great Stormy herself seems to void my prejudice. Also my other suspicion that the awards are issued too late in a star's career does not hold universally. So while I much agree with your observation, I do not have a good theory for it anymore. |

| Eric381 Deactivated User What are you looking at? It 2452 Posts 3/05 | I'm not much of a "Mac Lee" fan, and I think others (plural) deserved to win, let alone fill her role as a nominee. Beauty is only skin deep (in porn), and performers who do 1 scene per month should be no more eligible than those who don't make the cutoff date each year. The flip side of this is the girl just annouced she's 5 months pregnant... One can surely argue that 'quantity is NOT better than quality', but I can't honestly believe that any given star who put out 12-15 titles in a year's time is THAT much better quality than the 80-100 titles that some girls risk their ass for. As for Performer of the Year, I see Otto has branded many of his titles this year with his bride's 2006 moniker. Oh yeah, and Stormy's a total babe! Edited by - Eric381 on 10/21/2006 9:17:43 PM |

| Den Member 911 Posts 9/02 | I know that the CAVR awards are not anything close to the AVN awards. In 10 years, never has a gal won Newbie of the Year and then followed up the next year and won Best Starlet. But, Hillary Scott is the reigning Newbie and she has had an outstanding sophomore year and she has a very good chance for Best Starlet. And, Stormy Daniels will be given very strong consideration for Features Director of the Year. Interesting.......... Den |
| cursive Member Your inquisitveness is infectious... 586 Posts 4/05 | Hillary was nommed for AVN's Best New Starlet the same year McKenzie was nominated. I don't think one could be nommed for Starlet twice. If anything, I think Hillary has a good chance for AVN's Female Performer of the Year award come year's end when AVN announces its 2007 nominations. Great write-up and observations, CJ. |

| Cumwhipper Senior Member 4050 Posts 3/04 | Sasha Knox just announced her retirement, and she only STARTED doing scenes in early 2006. I don't know if she's nominated in any AVN categories, but if she wins any, it would be truly ironic. Sasha seems to me to be a classic case of burnout - a meteoric rise, over 100 scenes in less than a year, and then... no direction to go but downhill. Too bad for her fans (including me). I want to see some of these newbies like Lindsay Kay, Amber Ashley and Celina Cross stay around for a while. But I already heard Lindsay talk about implants - almost always ruins a star for me :-( Maybe the agents are always pushing the girls to go too fast for their own good and causing the burnout? Who knows? Just my 2 cents... |
| Crucifixio_Jones Senior Member Arrogant & Obnoxious Narcissist 4727 Posts 10/03 | Alektra Blue To say that this list confuzzles me would be an understatment. The most disturbing thing about it, however, would be the exclusion of Gianna (shit, where's Sierra Sinn?) while inactive, retired, missing, g/g-only chicks, contract stars and girls so new I'd think they were ineligible did make it onto the list. So who have we seen the last of (if last year's win was any indication)? Edited by - Crucifixio_Jones on 11/19/2006 2:26:53 AM |

If she leaves adult, the videos follow her everywhere she goes. If she takes the AVN award, cries "Yiiiiihaaa!!!" and rides off into the sunset never to be seen again, so what? |
