After watching all of it, I have to say that I'm even more saddened and worried about her than I was before I watched it. She seems to be overwhelmed with everything-school (paying for it), the backlash from family, friends and strangers after she was "outed" as being a pornstar, and also the daily grind (no pun intended) of being a pornstar. As much as she talks about porn giving her a sense of empowerment, she comes off in this documentary as a sad, lonely and exhausted young woman who's been overwhelmed by how drastically her life has changed in the past year. Additionally, I couldn't help but notice how the documentary starts out with her mentioning how good it is to be in the porn industry, yet it ends with her talking about how bad the job is (i.e. vagina tears, "scammers," and doing scenes even though you don't want to while you're on the verge of crying). Right after that, she breaks down and starts crying when she thinks of her mom and imagines what she would think if she actually saw what she does when she's Belle Knox. I have to admit, I was cynical about her at first, but the more I read, hear and see of her, the more sorry I am for her. It's bad enough that she's been ostracized by family and friends, but the fact that she's drawn the scorn of many in the porn industry only makes matters worse. [Link] |

It tells the story how a young woman named ****** who is becoming Belle Knox. But do the makers of this film know ****** better than the crew at Brazzers? I don't think so. I think they are telling the story of another fictional character who I will call "The Duke Porn Star." Perhaps, ****** is becoming "Belle Knox, the Duke Porn Star". If so, she is becoming a fictional character. "Belle Knox, the Duke Porn Star" is more complex than characters like "Lisa Ann" or "Julia Ann". But so are the characters we see on Survivor. In our postmodern age, the boundary between reality and fiction has broken down. But whenever I look at TV (especially TV news and documentaries) I try to remind myself that there is a large element of fiction in what I am watching. This is why I wasn't surprised when the documentary moved from happy to sad. I knew it was largely a fiction. I knew the basics of story structure, so when I saw the happy beginning, I knew it would end sadly. I don't know ******. I don't think the crew at Brazzers knows her, I don't think the Conde Nast crew knows her. I think she's struggling to know herself. I was just saying that the documentary was as constructed as any work of fiction, and they had created a second fictional character, who I called "The Duke Porn Star." For example, they used images from this photo shoot throughout the documentary, often as an ironic visual when the Duke Porn Star was talking about how sexually liberated or whatever she feels.  For all I know, Conde Nast sponsored the photo shoot. But it clearly wasn't a porn shoot, some mainstream photographer thought it would be a good visual to tell a story about the Duke Porn Star. The pretense is that the documentary film makers were doing something more honest than the rest of the media (including the porn business), but a moment's reflection reveals that to be obvious bullshit. I never said no-one knows ******. Clearly, she has a family, and like us all, she is engaged in a process of self-discovery. But the documentary struck me as having as little to do with reality as anything else I've ever seem on TV. (I would put it someplace between Survivor and the Evening News. I've been in the midst of two major news stories, so I have a sense of how distorted news coverage is, and I have the sense that Reality TV is even more of a fiction.) As for why anyone would make a "fake documentary"/ First, it's not black and white, but you might as well ask why is our culture so infused with nonsense? It's a very complex situation. But you do recognize that the overwhelming majority of what passes for "reality" in the media is just flashing images on a screen, right? I'm not saying that ****** isn't a real person, just that she isn't Belle Knox or the Duke Porn Star. [Link] |

However, listening to Belle tell it, it seemed to me that her biggest regret, and what she perceives as her "one bad choice," was not telling her parents from the start, before everyone else found out (Duke students/national media). Additionally, I thought that the show, and Belle's telling of the story, really painted her mother in a negative light-almost suggesting that if it wasn't for how strict, conservative and overbearing her mother was, she would've never done porn.
