I've been working on a few different blockchain projects recently. A project I'm currently involved with is building the structure for a DAO to purchase and operate a race track as a membership organization. This project got me thinking about ways that a DAO could be implemented/integrated into the community here.

If you're not familiar with DAOs here's a good article on Medium.com that explains them. (Sorry you have to have a free account there to read the article.)

Is there interest in forming a DAO that would fund content (movies/scenes) that would be driven by community input? Essentially a member-driven content creation company. Scenes/movies would be released as NFTs to DAO members. Performers/directors would be compensated for their time as well as receive a commission (in perpetuity) on the sales of any NFTs to non-DAO members. Some content would be only available to DAO members, that would be determined by the voting members of the DAO.

From a technical standpoint I'd use Solana as the blockchain the DAO and content exists on instead of Ethereum.

I realize maybe this is a conversation for the Tech Talk forum because it's too nerdy but I figured there are more fans participating here than in Tech Talk.

Would you be interested in being a member? If you're a performer/director would you be interested in being hired to produce content?

Highly interesting and I am very much in favor of this, it'd be very interesting to see something like this unfold and to be (even a small) part of it. Also hoping to see, even a small portion, of the adult entertainment industry break, snap, crush the credit card companies stranglehold they have on it and what is, or isn't, allowed.

I'm reading through the developer docs at the Secret Network today. This could have a role.

I setup a test/dev Solana environment. I don't think it's a good fit. Cosmos and/or SCRT look like better candidates. (Solana validators are very expensive servers and all transactions on the network have to be conducted in SOL.)

Some of the logistics issues I see that would need addressing:

  • Custodian of records - performer proof-of-age needs to be available for inspection. How does that happen?

  • Content standards - members of the DAO might want to fund content that might be illegal in some jurisdictions.

  • DAO membership levels and voting structure - who gets how much of a say in how the DAO operates

  • Membership standards - who can join and how do they leave? Potential issues with minors attempting to participate, how to prevent this?

  • Content distribution methods and controls - who has access to the content and how is it controlled? Do members lose their rights with they leave the DAO, etc.

  • Private or public blockchain?

  • Piracy prevention? - is it even possible? Anything that appears on a screen can be copied and redistributed elsewhere.

I'm sure there are many, many more things to consider. These are just a few that popped into my head.

I live in an area where local government decisions about spending and future directions are conducted in the New England Town Meeting format. It's essentially a mob-rule form of local government. A DAO likely has the same dynamics involved which concerns me a bit.

Maybe I don't understand what a DAO is but this sounds like a crowdunded porn company. And if so, what extra value is provided by using NFTs/the blockchain?

It's partially like a crowd funded porn company. The primary difference is that it's automated through a system of code that exists on a blockchain and executes as a series of "Smart Contracts". All actions/decisions made by the DAO are executed by little programs so there's no one person's self-interest in a position of authority that can take action on behalf of the whole group.

There are a few things off the top of my head that make blockchain appealing vs. just standard crowd funding:

  • It's automated - no headaches/staff involved with managing receipt of funds or payments made for production. Performers/directors would also automatically receive their residual on certain types of sales defined by the DAO's code.

  • It's mostly anonymous - can be completely anonymous depending on how the members have their wallets setup.

  • Distribution - content distributed to DAO members can be encrypted so only their authentication keys will allow them to access the content produced for the group.

I'm sure there's more, just a few that come to mind.

There's a bit of chicken/egg thing though. It's not worth the effort to build the DAO if the performers aren't interested.

^ thank you for that.

I like the idea that this might help fans and stars to interact and make fans wish with an rasonable funding come true. For the pornstars it could be a 3rd way beside studios and OF as they might even earn more in compliance with the fan wishes.

The more I think about it the more this seems like a "If you build it, they will come" sort of situation. If you're trying to sell performers on the technical aspect - why do they care? But if you setup the DAO and you explain it to them like any other job (this is the scene, this is the pay etc) I don't think they'll care about the rest of it.

I've reached out to a handful of industry people and they like the concept of getting residuals but don't really have much input about the business end of things. I wish I had time to put into a "build it and (maybe) they will come" business plan.

The trick to the whole thing would be to somehow use authenticated tokens to limited piracy. It would involve a specialized player app for computers and phones that can authenticate that a user is a member in good standing before playing the content. But there's still no way to prevent someone from screen-recording what's on their display and posting it to PornHub or elsewhere.

The appeal of the DAO for most fans would be the exclusivity and access to "premium" created specifically for members. That becomes less appealing when DAO members pirate stuff because it makes them feel cool or some stupid shit like that.

I don't think piracy is worth worrying about at this stage. Whatever budget you've got for this project, there are companies out there with 1 hex that amount who've still failed to solve this problem. The real issue is well...the basics of porn production (1) getting enough members together to even pay for a scene and (2) actually booking talent.

At the moment I don't have the time to devote to such a project in hopes that it might work out someday. I think it would be interesting and could be successful. But it's a LOT of work to get it up and running.

Do you have any idea about the costs of such project?
