can someone tell me what this date indicates? is it the date filming began or ended. Or the date editing started or something. How is the production date that is listed on porn DVDs decided?

The rules are actually pretty vague. Since the purpose is to comply with laws written to prevent movies from containing minors, it would make sense for companies to use the first date of any shooting as the date of production.

Some companies list all of the shooting days as the dates of production, which probably protects them should a performer turn 18 during the production and they can prove that she shot after that date.

Other companies use the date of duplication, which I just think is flat out incorrect, given the intent of the law.

Well, it does force you to be on the safe side. When DBM created the Hardline series of DVD compilations, they had to assemble the proof-of-age for the performers in the scenes at the time the scenes were originally shot. Even scenes shot before that July 1995 date, because no one would believe, nor should they, that the DVD was produced before July 1995.

I had been wondering this very same thing. I've noticed on some of the new movies I get that the date of production is awfully close to the date that I'm watching the movie in my home. For example when watching Service Animals 15 it shows the date of production as 12/01/03. I rented this dvd online and had it in my home within a week or so of the supposed date of production. Seems a little odd to me..

I am also interested in this problem. There must surely be some record of when each scene was shot - does anyone know an easy way of finding this out?

My own interest stems from trying to determine an accurate chronology of Dina Jewel's US movies. Dina was a blonde Norwegian pornstar (some might say superstar!) in the late 90s.

She starred in several movies for various companies which were quite obviously shot in the US. They were released with production dates from late 1997, through 1998, to early 1999.

When were they actually shot? Was Dina actually in the US throughout this period or were the movies shot over a month or so and their releases staggered? Short of asking her, does anyone know how to find out?

Welcome ric1245,

I cannot imagine that she stayed that long - it's a visa issue.
A way to approach your question is first of all compile a list of movies (this site + Walter Burns may be a another good source) and prodution companies and then ask them.

Not very helpful, sorry.

Damn you secluded Observer
I am pretty sure she was in the US during different periods. She was still a redhead when she appeared in Fresh Meat 3 (credited as Dina) in 1996 and Dinner Party II: The Buffet (credited as Nanna), in 1996 (so earlier than 1997). She had even darker hair in her Private movies, shot in 1996-1997 and she became a platinum blonde in her late 1997-1998 releases (such as Butt Row Euro Style 2: The Big-Ass Anal All Stars , The Lecher 2: Looking for Strays , Think Sphinc , ...)
I remember that this question was asked on RAME last year and some Scandinavian posters seemed quite knowledgeable on the subject, much more than I am anyway. I believe some of Dina's earliest work was for the Dutch company Seventeen. She looked a bit like she looked in Fresh Meat 3 at that time.

Thanks for all the information and suggestions, especially from Walter Burns. Glad to see that Dina is not forgotten on this site!

According to some sources, Dina Jewel or Nanna Gronnevik to use her real name, was born on February 1st 1978. If that is correct her 2 Private movies, where she does look quite young and brunette, shot aboard ship in May/June 1996 would seem to be some of her first (legal) adult movies. Where do the Club Seventeen films fit in then?

As Walter rightly says Dinner Party 2: The Buffet was shot in the US sometime during her brunette phase in 1996. Confusingly Dina also featured in US Penthouse February 1998 as the brunette Nanna Gibson!

As to Fresh Meat #3, I'm not sure whether Dina's scene was actually shot in the US - one of the male stars in Fresh Meat #3 also appeared in the Private movie Sex Voyage, and also featured in a Scandinavian production called Joe's Wild World #4 with Dina in Cannes around this time.

It just shows how difficult it is to find out an accurate chronology of any pornstar. To my mind, and this is obviously a personal opinion, Dina appeared to be enjoying herself much more in her European movies - she did make some good US movies, but there are some disturbing aspects to a lot of her later US material centered around the anal scenes which she obviously is not too happy with - but at the end of the day I suppose it was down to $$$.
