DD/DTS 5.1 dvds...

DarkDTSes Member 97 Posts 10/02	Posted - Oct 1 2002 : 11:43PM I just ordered and should be receiving Euphoria. Found out it's actually an "anamorphic, dd/dts 5.1, 2-disc" dvd. WOW!! Didn't think porn companies would be willing to spend this kind of money to produce a movie. Hope Euphoria is good as the critics say! Can you name more dd/dts/anamorphic titles? Or at least titles that have dd/dts or just one of the 2? Thanks! [Link]

The sound mix in porn is not THAT detailed. BTW, I´m completely unable to hear the differences between DTS and DD 5.1, and I do have a nice home-theater set-up. The only time I ACTUALLY noted the difference was with Anchor Bay´s edition of Dario Argento´s OPERA. But it was a very different case: the DD 5.1 and the DTS mixes were COMPLETELY different. ........... Are you an horror fan? Then crawl here for a nice surprise! Just kidding you...we all hear things differently. But I can tell you that for me the difference is clear as day. DTS is the superior format! What kind of HT gear do you own by the way? Find it a little funny you don't hear a difference. :) What no choppers flying over head in a porn?? Heh, I know what you mean. I'm not expecting to hear the same sound sfx you would from lets say Black Hawk Down or Blade 2. But I'm sure the MOOOANS are more intense :)) Later guys! I haven't seen The Ass Collector yet so I can't comment on the quality of the film yet but The Private Gladiator was good. I've heard that the NuTech DTS tracks just use the compression, not the audio benefits. On a side note, as far as DD vs DTS, usually I hear little to no great difference, there are often subtle differences, but if you are listening that much to catch them, you aren't enjoying the flick. One film that I noticed a big difference on is the T2 Ultimate Edition. There are also some flicks where the DD track sounds far better than the DTS track. Just my 2 cents. [Link]

Click to expand Yes, I was thinking of picking up Gladiator for the longest time...then I read some of the reviews here mentioning how most of the women were "2nd rate" with the exception of one big name "actress". As much as I'd love to see a Private film with this kind of budget and effort...if the women are almost all just vaguely attractive and new...why bother? I'm still undecided on Gladiator...unless I can be convinced otherwise... And, on a side note...what DD dvd, in your opinion, sounds better than a DTS?? :) [Link]

Click to expand Hello PS, As for concert dvds...the Eagles:Hell Freezes Over DTS is still probally one of the best out there. I listen via the PCM track as my old Denon receiver only has DD and no DTS (about to upgrade incidentally). Concert dvds for some strange reasons are hard to do right. Case in point, Roy Orbison's Black/White dvd...great fidelity!! But in DD 5.1, at times you hear the background singers that are clearly in front of you in the surround channels...WTF?? So, I just put it back to Dolby Surround (or is it the PCM track...its' been a while since I played it...sorry!). Another excellent concert dvd is Luis Miguel's "Vivo". Sound was expertly mastered. No bleeding of information into the wrong channels. Plus, if you like Spanish music, it's a great dvd. Later... [Link]

Almost all Hollywood DVDs are now anamorphic. Another difference I find with non-anamorphic DVDs is that I have to manually readjust my projector in order to play it properly. In my case, the picture shrinks from a 123" wide screen to about 90" - it looks really strange to have a movie in the middle of a screen that is masked for a bigger picture. Unfortunately, adult videos are still shot in the 4x3 TV format. Until they change to the wide-screen 1:85 format, anamorphic is just a pipedream. [Link]

The original was shot in high-definition and down down-converted to DVD. The picture quality and audio quality are both very good (but unfortunately only Dolby Digital 5.1), and the camerawork is outstanding. [Link]

What could be better than watching a good porno dvd on using a 9" CRT FPTV upconverted to whatever resolution on your Krell HT system...heh... I've been into the HT scene since 1995 btw... What kind of projector do you have? LCD? DLP? DILA? CRT? And no...I don't yet have a WS HDTV yet...but that is my next upgrade...I'm most likely going to get a RPTV...the quality of todays LCDs still doesn't approach a DLP...and a good DLP runs 8-12k US...no thanks! :) Later... I know in general I am far less than impressed with remixed DTS tracks for old releases that were never in DTS, ie. The Evil Dead, and I remember Daylight (Sylvester Stallone) having a DTS track that I was unimpressed with but a 5.1 mix (two different disc releases they don't come together) that I was. [Link]

Click to expand I'll agree with you there to a point. Mainstream dvds remixed into DD or DTS will usually sound too exagerated. Like the last rereleased Superman dvd. You can tell sfx was added. Yet, I thought it worked...imho...then there are old films that get the DD or DTS treatment and you don't really notice any improvement. The audio tracks still sound dated... I own the DD 5.1 version of Daylight. Didn't get a change to hear the DTS 5.1 version so I can't comment on both. I bought Daylight on a recommendation from a fellow IRC member at #dvd. She made it sound so impressive...that it was THE dvd to use to demo her HT system (Lexicon prepro, 9" CRT...etc.). Yet I found the audio only decent. I think the dvd itself wasn't the best. When that happens, you are not comparing DD to DTS, you are comparing one mix to the other. The primary difference between DD and DTS is that DD is a more compressed format. Dolby claims that what they are eliminating is everything outside of the range of human hearing capabilities. Therefore, a lower level of compression should result in no sonic difference. To Dolby, the benefit of DD over DTS is that it takes up less space on whatever medium (DVD, HDTV, Satellite, Digital Cable, etc...) than DTS would (or does, in the case of DVD). DTS claims that Dolby overcompresses the audio and that there is an audible difference between the two. Because of this claim, DTS has a motive for using a different audio mix than is used for the DD soundtrack. In the early days of DTS (on laserdisc), DTS was overaccentuating (is that a word?) the deep bass making the DTS track louder than the corresponding DD track. They claim that this was an unintentional error (but who knows?). Personally, when the same audio mix is used for DD and DTS on the same disc, I can't hear the difference (DarkDTSes, I have a Denon 4800 and M&K speakers, It's not the equipment). However, my attitude with DTS is that if it is present on a disc, I will listen to the DTS track. If there is a choice between purchasing a DTS DVD and a DD DVD, and everything else is identical , I will buy the DTS version. If the DTS version costs more, or there are feature missing from the DTS version (because of the extra space that DTS requires over DD), as I believe was the case with Jaws, I'm buying the DD version. Click to expand Glad to see some one has been doing their reading on DD vs. DTS. :) Assuming that is true that the two audio mixes are different you are absolutely right. I was simply making a casual observation. Take Saving Private Ryan. One of the few titles that has a separate DD dvd and a DTS dvd. I've heard both many time. And on many grades of audio equipment. From my Denon 2700 to Classe/Krell/Wilson Audio systems. And I can tell you that I DEFINITELY heard a significant improvement on the DTS dvd. I also think whether one hears a difference is subjective just short of conducting a labortory style a/b test. For me personally DTS tracks have always sounded better. The compression is so evident at the top and bottom ends and the voices come alive in the DTS track with better separation and focus. I have to be honest and say that this amp has impressed me so much I'm now spoilt, I just leave it in 'Auto' and let it decide. [Link]

Just find clicking the icon associated with each posting more convenient. The way it was set-up before. But I've always been a fan of Marantz receivers even before the x200 series receivers came along. They have a nice amp section. I know the sr8200/sr9200 are a lot better. I guess Marantz got a lot of complaints and was embarassed by the many detailed reviews...I'm still considering the sr9200 but would like to first find out at what wpc will it clip... Later all!
