| Gof Member United Kingdom 151 Posts 4/03 | I have noticed an increasing trend for companies to release scenes on its website, sometimes weeks before the DVD release. This seems to be particularly the case with much anticipated scenes, with Keisha's first anal for Hard X being a recent example. This raises the question of whether DVDs are still relevant or as relevant, particularly if one has to wait longer for the DVD release? Are DVDs reviews still relevant if consumers are watching individual scenes on-line? There is also the cost issue. Presumably it's a lot cheaper to subscribe to on-line content rather than buy 2 or 3 DVDs. Personally, I like the physical nature of a DVD and the cover art and the fact that I am creating a DVD collection. What do you guys think? [Link] |
| lex von v Senior Member 2511 Posts 12/12 | Currently, DVDs have the following drawbacks: - no HD (only a few titles are available as Blu-ray), so we are limited to 480p - as already mentioned the growing trend of DVDs being only a secondary form of business, so DVD release date is AFTER the online release - if the DVD has a faulty issue, with the low numbers of DVDs produced there will be no fixed 2nd issue (things that still happen with normal movie DVDs from time to time). I have multiple issues with DVDs even from major companies that have errors but nothing will be done about it - sometimes online content has unedited scenes (fisting, etc. which is not on the retail version) - usually online is cheaper Still, I like it. With 1000+ normal motion picture DVDs in my collection and approx 200 titles in the HC section, my collection is still growing. there are, however some things on the plus side - nice view in the collection, especially if the DVDs have slip-case covers, shiny/glossy/reflecting cover art etc. - sometimes, DVDs have BTS not to be found online - sometimes, DVDs do not have a watermark which the online-version has (Elegant Angel & Blacked.com comes to mind, as do earlier Jules Jordan and Evil Angel, sadly both now have watermark also on the DVD) - for some sites it may be cheaper to get the DVD instead of joining (if only for a month or so), especially in the aftermarket where you can get certain DVDs for a few bucks - usually, for 480p the quality is better than for 480p online, since a higher bitrate (but an older compression method) is used. If no HD is available, I would assume the DVD is to prefer, since there's no 720p or 1080p version online with a better image. - the same goes for Blu-ray, too. 3 hours movie on a blu-ray takes up about 40GB with up to 40 mbit/s (or more), while the same scene for download usually has only 10-15mbit/s of datarate. The main reason for me only paying for online subscriptions or VOD for porn is a perception of better value for money because in most cases I don't care for the whole female cast of a porn movie so I feel I'm wasting money on performers whose scenes I won't watch. |

| Dan Senior Member 2056 Posts 6/07 | I'd say the future of porn is online porn-gaming, where people will be able to choose and play out their own sex-fantasies. This is the future, not only because it will fulfill people's fantasies better, but also because this will solve the problem porn-makers have with porn-piracy. When you have a porn movie online, then copying it and redistributing it for free to others is relatively easy. All you need is one viewer with a computer program to record everything that happens on screen. Making such a copy is so easy that people don't even need any technical expertise for this. But when you have a sex-game online, then making a copy of what happens on screen doesn't really make a copy of the game. Because you can't play the recording the way you can play the game. If games are distributed on DVDs, then copying them would be easy too. But if game software is located on a server controlled by the porn company, then copying that software is pretty hard for anybody to do. And even if people manage to copy it, then that software probably won't work on individual computers, without a server. Because software designed for servers needs to be run from servers. | JigglyBoobs Senior Member 1614 Posts 3/12 | Digital Playground's Virtual Sex with... series was pretty good but it's not for everyone. People have such varying tastes that I doubt an online sex game could possibly be that silver bullet in the fight against piracy. I'm sure an online version could have more scenarios than the Virtual Sex DVDs but I'd be surprised if they could cover all bases. It would probably require a massive budget and attracting investment could be a challenge without a huge amount of research, which would probably be essential to project a logical ROI. You can bring a horse to water but you can't make it drink... |
| Dan Senior Member 2056 Posts 6/07 | Perhaps present-day computer technology isn't yet good enough to create online porn-games for a reasonable cost. But such technology is advancing every year and becoming cheaper too. Which is why I believe that this will be the future of porn. Online porn-gaming has to be made realistic enough to be clearly better than just watching a porn-movie. And once you have this kind of realism for a reasonable cost, then this clearly will be the way to go for the whole porn industry. Because the porn industry will have a product that cannot be copied and a product that many regular porn-watchers would want to use. It's possible now to copy a person's voice and make it into a computer voice that sounds just like the real person. That's how Apple's Siri voice works on the iPhone. Apple's Siri can now say anything its computer program makes it say, including things that the original voice actress has never said herself. Something like this is possible to do with images of the human body too. Live porn-actresses and actors could record a series of sex-acts with each other, and this recording would then be used to create computer-generated characters that look just like them. Such computer characters would be able to do things that the original actors never did themselves, just like this was done with the Siri voice. There would still be work for live porn-actors and actresses in such a situation. But their work would be very different from what they do now. Because doing porn for a computer game is very different from doing porn for a movie. Edited by - Dan on 5/12/2015 8:18:04 AM |

| JigglyBoobs Senior Member 1614 Posts 3/12 | Again believe it or not, I'm aware that technology is advancing (I have worked in the manufacturing industry) and its cost is decreasing which can be passed on to the consumer. Funnily enough, I don't recall having a smartphone a decade ago, just a PDA that had functionality I almost take for granted today. There's another pattern. I'm aware that taking part in a simulated experience is different from watching something similar. I've played video games and watched movies with similar themes or plots - I know the experience is different. You've either not appreciated or wilfully neglected that there are considerations beyond the transaction than that experience. Knowing somebody has bought a porno is one thing but knowing more intimate details about their fantasies that can be collected from the inputs they provide in your online porn game is another. All it takes is a hack through brute force or poor security for those details to be siphoned off and sold, exposed or used as leverage for blackmail, cue the embarrassment. Service level agreements and trust are two of the biggest obstacles in the way of online services taking the place of in house services. Only the most naive people won't question what assurances there are that their details have the most unlikely chance of being hacked. You said your idea would help fight piracy in time but is time a luxury that a lot of companies in the industry have? Talking about your "solution" in terms of how it be feasible when the cost comes down almost sounds like how curing a patient is feasible but you only come up with a cure after that patient dies from their ailment. As I said before, the Virtual Sex with series was pretty good but you've said nothing in your proposal to convince me your game would gain mass adoption and become a game changer. I'm sure it'll work as a novelty for some but I've seen nothing to make me believe it will revolutionize the industry. |

I think some of you must live in remote areas and just don't see as much of this as you would if you lived in a large metro. And I am not denying the cost of producing DVD's in the Adult market can be expensive, but since it is the largest market for DVD's........ |

| Dan Senior Member 2056 Posts 6/07 | That's how it works for any kind of computer-driven technological solution to some problem, including porn. Just because porn computer-games aren't good enough now doesn't mean that they won't be good enough in a few years from now. Porn has gone through a number of technological revolutions in the past. And it doesn't make sense to think that we've finally had our last technological revolution and from now on things will stay the same for the foreseeable future. Such an idea makes no sense at all. There is no such thing as the final technological revolution in porn or in anything else. Edited by - Dan on 5/14/2015 5:37:06 AM |

Personally, I haven't bought any DVD's for a while and the last blu-ray I bought was the Tera Patrick one they did in Hawaii with all the pretty scenery. I do still rent them though since there are certain scenes that can only be found on DVD and have never been converted to digitial or put online. Anyways, with 4k video out now some of the video quality you can get online has finally caught up to the quality you find on disc. |
| N00dlesDaddy Senior Member Layla...got me on my knees... 1793 Posts 7/13 | For the longest time I bought solely DVDs (amassing a humongous collection), probably due to a combination of mistrust/naivety about viewing online. Once I joined my first site, though, I realised the extent to which I'd been, literally, paying through the nose. The sheer volume of content you can download for the same price (or less) of a DVD makes it an absolute no-brainer. No physical storage hassles either. Very rare I buy any DVDs nowadays. |

| Maxxx Stirner Deactivated User 319 Posts 11/14 | One idea I have is that a place like Pornhub could have a performer tipping option where 10 percent of the tip goes to the producers. This 10 percent would be made null of course it performers are also the producers. The adjunct to this is that porn sites can have their own own performer tipping system that is tied to becoming a member(for this of course the WHOLE tip goes to the performer). This will have to be aggressively low pricing however as increasingly free porn will make for prices that compete with free. Basically Brazzers, JJ EA/EA would set up channels at pornhub and connect with fans. There could be a site tribute that fans can give to companies (like what exists on clips4sale). I think if a site like pornhub made this overtures, producers might look at them less badly. I also think that more fan/member customization is needed. Voting on who the next performer will be in a given series, most wanted performer polls/votes where members determine the performers ect(think of the booty movie 2 voting process, insulate that process and tie it to one day membership). When bitcoin/blockchain evolves to the next level in the 2020s all the points I am making will make more sense. |
| JigglyBoobs Senior Member 1614 Posts 3/12 | I disagreed with your specific suggestion but I absolutely did not disagree with technological progress outright and frankly you're extremely naive to suggest I'm some sort of conservative Luddite. What I said was that you failed to convince me that your proposal was a solution that would get off the ground and would stay in the air. Instead of giving a logical counter argument against what I feel are legitimate barriers against online porn computer games (trust, security and service level agreements, true of most forms of cloud computing services), you go on the defensive, evading what I said and implying that I said we've come to the end of technological progress. |
| Jacco All-Star Member "liable to deprave and corrupt" 2673 Posts 5/04 | To paraphrase Mark Twain, the reports on the death of DVD are an exaggeration. People who spend a lot of time online (like probably all of us here) tend to forget how many people don't have decent internet and for who streaming or downloading is just not an option at all. IF and when the DVD goes away it will be to another kind of physical medium (not Bluray, that failed in porn due to the high production costs), but it has not emerged yet. And people do like to really own something, which you do with a DVD and not with streaming, DRM-ed downloads and crap like that. Hell, after DVD's became popular it took videotapes more than a decade to be replaced. Jacco |

Even though DVD sales continue to drop, there are still a hell of a lot of people out there buying them. It's like McDonald's...it seems like every month there's some business report talking about how much their sales have dropped (along with their stock value), but needless to say, there are still plenty of people out there eating Micky-D's. |

| Unbeliever Member 418 Posts 1/15 | When Playstation decided to give their next system a disc drive option (you can buy a Playstation 5 with or without one... it's up to you) because of consumer backlash about preferring hard copies of games (of which I was one of those)... and then X-Box followed suit. This decision has kept discs limping painfully along for another 5 years or so. But even I, who do prefer Hard Copies of games and who have not upgraded to a PS5 yet have been downloading digital copies of games for my PS4 a lot in the last 6 months. This is for a variety of factors, like game shops either haven't had copies of games that I wanted, or not the version of them that I wanted, how ridiculously cheap Playstation sales online are, and how easy the whole process is. Some of these no doubt have been done on purpose to prep us to accept that the PS6 will definitely not have a disc drive, and to generate more converts... but it is difficult for even me a die hard "physical discs are far superior" guy to deny how much easier it is to just buy stuff through the Playstation Store. As for TV streaming services. I am literally the only person in my "circle of people" who is the last hold out to jump on the bandwagon. Everyone else I know has just given up on their DVD/Bluray collection and converted to becoming total Streaming Whores now. There will still be a few niche Disc Drive weirdos that will continue on for the next 20 years no doubt. But they will be a rare breed. Like those people who still have "Lazer Disc" record systems. But regardless, the days of the disc drive are numbered... the clock is already counting down as we speak. |

| Unbeliever Member 418 Posts 1/15 | While I'm more talking about the death of newly mass-produced Laser Disc reading devices (which without those being readily produced and available, unless you are willing to fork out to get your old devices continually repaired and are willing to only buy old previous years movie releases... will limit your ability to watch them). Finding a new 2021 made laptop with a disc drive included is becoming increasingly difficult already (you have to buy them separately as a USB attachment usually), even 2 years ago this was not the case. Pure digital download releases are becoming more common as are options to download 30+ GB uncompressed quality versions of movies which are far superior to what a bluray disc is capable of having (which when combined with 5G downloads speeds are now becoming much more viable). Streaming services generally are taking off worldwide. Online game downloads are slowly but stedily rising in popularity (despite as mentioned above not having a "resale" option without physical copies. 16TB+ external Hard drives with 3.0 USB ports are becoming cheaper on a monthly basis and are already no longer unaffordable for most. As are Solid State Drives (SSD's) becoming larger and cheaper to buy. And as I said, just among my personal friends. People who were obsessed with owning each and every new release as they came out to add the discs to their extensive collections over the last few decades, their collections are mostly sitting on their shelves gathering dust unadded to and unloved. I am the last holdout I know. And when the Playstation 6 is announced years from now without a disc drive addition even being an option... that announcement will be the final nail in the coffin. |

He's the one who told me about it. I don't see him very often, but next time I do I'll ask him which sites he purchases these movies from. |

| LCF All-Star Member Non Prevalebunt! 10364 Posts 1/05 | I can play my hard copy whenever I want , wherever I want , once I bought it it's in there I only need a working console. When I remove a disc from a console it stays in my library ready to be used again, but if I install it on a HDD I'd have to remove it to make room for new games if they close the servers I'd lose my purchase and won't be able to DL it anymore And yes I buy hard copies and even their digital counterpart , because I found it easier to change game from my HDD rather than change the disc plus I downloaded many indies who aren't available through retailers Of course I'm a collector and a retrogamer too, were I one of those who just buy and sell or at least buy and play just once the Digital Download is a great opportunity , you buy through offer, discounts and special occasions , play your game and just remove it , but to me this is not an option , at least as a main suply for my games
The providers of thestreaming services, in my case Amazon Prime and Netflix, don't have their stuff for ever they remove them , if I hadn't the chance to see something I'd lose it or I may have to buy another streaming service , for example I never saw Seinfeld back then so I had the chance to watch it on Prime , I only could watch 8 seasons and a couple episodes of season 9 , now they have removed it and I don't know who has it, I couldn't watch Ready Player One when it was available with Prime now they moved it in their store and I have to pay for it , and they did so for many other things. A lot of material migrated to Disney+ or other streaming services , I had also Infinity but I didn't like it, never again. needless to say I hate commercials that's the main reason why I converted to streaming services in the first place Edited by - LCF on 5/14/2021 11:43:41 AM |

| Big_Tits_Addict Member 642 Posts 5/21 | Rather than slapping a bunch of random scenes of different girls and genres/fetishes together; sales would probably be stronger if each release was a showcase of a specific girl e.g. a Savannah Bond interracial showcase with scenes from Jules Jordan, Dogfart, Bang Bros I have yet to buy any porn Blu-ray because nothing available appealed to me. I haven't found any detailed reviews but I'm guessing the video quality bitrate isn't as high as it could be and the audio quality is probably lossy instead of lossless. If companies are going to pay higher costs for Blu-ray why skimp on audio to save money there? Even some Hollywood studios still can't make an above average Blu-ray release free of video and audio problems. Sometimes Blu-rays of the same movie in English released in other countries look and sound better because a different company actually knows what they're doing. And if they're region A or you have a region free player sometimes it's worth importing and paying a little extra for shipping. |

| lex von v Senior Member 2511 Posts 12/12 | Previously there were roughly 12 DVDs per months from this studio, now (apparently coinciding with the release of the new ZT site) it's VOD only. The only gripe I have with it that I was collecting the covers for all these movies (look at my twitter https://www.twitter.com/Lex_von_v), no more high-res covers for the movies from this company, as the VOD sites don't have high-res version of that which I was able to get from the physical DVDs... |
