I have a really lame question maybe someone can answer.
I just recently viewed "Deep Throat" (the Arrow DVD) for the first time in years. But something kinda bugged me, I remembered the opening title music to be different. Just wondering if they changed the music for that DVD release and if the new HD has the original music?
I don't think that they changed the music. To the best of my memory, it's the same music as used in the VCA version and the same music used in the High-Def version.
Wodgers, that depends. I'd actually consider the original Arrow release to be the best version. The High Def version has a widescreen picture that is how the film was presented in some theaters, but from what I understand it was intended to be seen in the 1.33:1 ratio as it is presented on both the VCA and Arrow discs. As the Arrow disc appears to contain the full uncut film, that would be my choice personally for best version.
Here's a site listing a 2 disc edition of Deep Throat released by Media Blasters. The prices on this site are in pounds, so I guess they're based in the UK, but the disc is shown as Region 1. An October 31 release date is listed, but it wouldn't be out of the question for a delay from MB.
Is this a mistake? Wasn't there somebody associated with MB that occasionally posted here? Can they confirm this?
The Alpha Blue Archives version is in very bad shape, I would hope the Gourmet version would be in better shape, I haven't seen that one yet though so I can't comment on it.
Yes I guy from there did post for a while back when the Cecil Howard releases were coming out. I don't know of any plans of theirs to release Deep Throat, the only three I know of are the available for pre-orders for DMJ, Debbie Does Dallas and Insatiable. I'll look up his e-mail over the weekend and shoot off one to him and see if they added this one.
There is no LEGITIMATE version of LINDA LOVELACE FOR PRESIDENT available. The film is owned by Arthur Marks, the producer, and he recently sold it to a major DVD company who will be releasing it in 2007 from the original negative. So please don't support bootleggers and wait for the official release if you are going to purchase the film. Or just rent it from Adult DVD Empire or another rental agency.
Media Blasters was interested in revisiting DEEP THROAT as a Special Edition, but it's in the negotiations stage right now.
I assume Media Blasters are hoping that people who don't ordinarily buy adult films will be curious enough to pick up these special editions, and I think it's fair to say that Deep Throat would appeal to this market. The question is, what would it do to future sales? Someone who buys Neon Nights or The Devil In Miss Jones might well seek out future releases, but someone who buys Deep Throat . . . ?
I actually think they'd be better off investing their time and money into something like The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann .
My worry is that after tackling all the big porno chic hits, then the company will lose interest and think of all other films as lesser and not as deserving of special edition treatment. VCA somehow still has the rights to the Metzger titles for a few more years, but I think MB could do wonders with all of those. MARASCHINO CHERRY is in the clutches of Video-X-Pix.
I think there is room for Media Blasters to make a good release of Deep Throat that will outshine the others available. Deep Throat, whether you like it or not, was a groundbreaking film for the adult industry and changed how the public, as a whole, viewed adult films. They could easily make a 3 disc release for this film that I would pick up. A commentary with Gerard Damiano and if they could get Harry Reems that would be great. A featurette on the making of the film. A featurette on how the film almost became mainstream at the time with newsreel footage from the time showing the popularity of it. A bonus disc with a remastered version of Deep Throat - Part 2 (only released by Alpha Blue at the current time) especially if they could find the "lost" footage from it.
Or by hitting the big titles first, that will draw the most attention, they may bring in more customers for future "lesser titles" after seeing the quality of the editions that they are releasing.
I agree - whether "Deep Throat" is on your want-list or not, one more "deluxe" reissue of classic porn can only be positive and bring more releases.
There would be room for ranting, if we knew for certain that Media Blasters can only release a very limited number of adult films, so the "Deep Throat" disc would look like wasted ammunition. Hopefully, this is not the case.
