Ok. so I have checked out a few Defiance Films dvd's lately and I must say that I'm so not impressed! First off, they claim to shoot it in HD, but who cares, because dvd's are not in HD yet and video quality with what everyone else uses looks great. The only benefit that you would get from HD is the higher resolution, but with current dvd's you can only get 500+ lines anyway, so why bother. I don't know who's to blame for the stretched out appearance of the picture, but someone needs to get their eyes checked, because the picture is distorted like no other. Sorry Defiance, you do have hot girls in your movies, but get rid of the widescreen and the distorted picture or I will not rent or purchase your titles anymore.

Sorry to be negative, but I think you're screwing up good dvd's. Just my opinion.

Hmm, since you're actually discussing technical issues with watching HD DVD's on your system, I'm moving this to Tech Talk.

Why bother? So that when HD players come out, all those titles can be released in the new format.

If you want to complain about video quality, go talk to a blockbuster studio like Vivid (whose movies look like...well, you know what). Defiance's stuff looks pretty decent to me - curious that you would single them out when there are bigger studios doing a far worse job.

Dude, sorry you feel this way, but alot of the studios doing it this way now. Why? When HD-DVDs would be affortable, we can take the real HD edited masters and re-issue them on HD DVD. That way we secure ourselves the first HD DVDs since the movie is already shot and edited. The only thing left is authoring and replication. Second, now we can VOD and Brodcast those movies in HD. The format of our DVDs as we know today, will change soon. How soon? I don't know. Look at Europe and Japan to see how the DVD market will change. For now Anarchy is shooting and editing Gonzo, Virtual or Gag videos on HD. One reviewer comment that why we need to see a girl licking a guy's ass in HD? Maybe now we don't need to see it, but who knows what will happen in a year?

I don't watch Vivid titles or many of the other "blockbuster" studios. So, it's a little hard to complain about something I don't watch. If I did have a problem with another company, I would definitely bitch and moan just as much.

Other studios might be shooting in HD, but they don't have a distorted image. I can understand the fact that it's a smart idea to film in HD now, but can't you atleast have a normal loooking picture? I don't notice this with any other studio, including you guys.

Distorted how? In your other post, you described it as "stretched out". Do you mean vertically or horizontally? If it's distorted vertically, check your DVD player to make sure that you have the right TV format (4:3 vs 16:9) setup.

Why do people look to get banned instead of just quitting posting? Do they get some brownie points from their case worker or is it just self destructive personalities playing out?

Anyhoo, the format to look for in the future, IMHO, is Blu Ray. HD-DVD just postponed their launch having loudly trumpeted an end of year blitz, and things now look decidedly shaky for that prospective format.

Bill, if the DVD in question has been authored in 16:9 anamorphic but without the right markers am I right in assuming the DVD player based controls will not alter the shape of the picture?

Samsung just announced this week that they are planning on having a player capable of playing both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD's within a year. IMO, if the competing formats are going to co-exist, this is exactly what will be needed to allow them to do so.

Correct. The picture will look be squeezed horizontally. It will look like a properly encoded anamorphic disc does on a 4:3 TV when the DVD player is incorrectly set to 16:9.
