Hi folks! This is my first review. I purchased a DVD player in December and have finally had a chance to watch some of the many DVDs I have accumulated.
Defying Gravity is a contemporary coming out story set in a college fraternity. (This film was shot in and around the USC campus in Los Angeles and on Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood.)
Frat guy John aka "Griff" is unsure of his orientation. His best friend Todd has a great relationship with his girl friend. He gets to meet her parents, go to a football tailgate party with them, and go to her parents house for dinner.
These are all the things that Griff yearns to do, but he instead is sneaking out of the frat house to go hop in the sack with Pete.
Pete is also part of the fraternity, but he
has moved off campus to gain some privacy.
Pete really likes Griff, but Griff views their encounters as just being able to get his rocks off.
A tragic event strikes Pete and Griff finally starts to come to terms with who he really is.
I'll stop here, I don't want to give the rest of the story away....
On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being best, I rate this movie a solid 8. My friend who watched it with me gave it a 9. Since the initial viewing, I have watched this film two more times within the week. It really is a good
movie, the film does not preach, does not have a political agenda or a particular point of view that it is trying to push, just a nice coming of age story of a guy in college.
Technical details: Produced in 1997, 93 minutes, color, full screen only, includes trailer, separate full sound track with slide show. The DVD pressing is excellent, the video quality is excellent ( there is one flashback sequence with Griff & Pete that does have quite a bit of NTSC artifacts) and the audio is excellent. Unrated, but probably would get an R rating due to the subject matter. Distributed by Wolfe Video.
