Why do camera people turn the lens angle diagonal? Do they really think I want to crank my head to one side to follow the action, or are they just trying to piss me off? I know they think they are getting more shot in the frame but if I remember correctly there is a zoom-in-out button on most cameras. USE IT!
Maybe they don't watch the stuff they shoot, otherwise after one viewing they might see my beef and stop the annoying practice.
Will someone send out the appropriate memo so I don't end up in traction. I don't want to have to explain this one to the emergency-room staff.
Although I'm not completely unsympathetic to your cricked neck frustrations. I doubt that the disrespectful tenor of your post is going to ellicit much positive response from the directors and camera men in question.
If you think you can do better, by all means go shoot some porn of your own. As an alternative, in my experience some directors are better about this than others--go spend money on their work instead. Otherwise, the least you could do is frame your criticism with some respect. I'm thinkin' you'll get better results that way.
Unfortunately, the average porn camera operator hasn't the foggiest clue what it's called or when to use it or why. The only reason they use it is because their cheap $800 camcorders don't have a wide angle lens and the motel or apartment they're shooting in is too small for them to back up sufficiently for them to frame a shot side-to-side. A diagonal shot simply gives them more screen real estate.
My first post in quite some time but this deserves consideration.
Personally I agree dutch tilts and sex don't generally mix unless you're doing the Mike Ninn thing. I can clear up the reason for this unnecessary camera behavior though. You can fit more action corner to corner than straight across. This is all predicated on the wideness of your lense. A .5 will give you the width but it also comes with bulbus nose close ups, a .6/5 lessens this sometimes undesirable effect but makes it much harder to fit head to toe, hence corner to corner.
I think I saw you lugging a ton of equipment out in front of the Venetian on the final day of the expo. But you seemed very much about your business there, and I wasn't quite sure it was you. Though the baseball cap was probably a giveaway.
I totally understand the reason for doing it, but it just doesn't work for me when I'm trying to enjoy my porn. And like I said in my original post - I don't think the camera people are watching the stuff for enjoyment. They may be watching it in the editing room but where it really matters is when you're watching it for "entertainment".
I'll relate a little story that happened to me once in the edit bay. I had come to the end credits so instead of running them straight up the screen as is commonly done I ran them corner to corner. When the director saw what I'd done he asked, "why do you have the end credits running corner to corner?", I cocked my head to one side and said, I want everyone to do "this", when the credits run.
He failed to see the humor in this and told me to do a standard roll. Made me laugh my ass off knowing that anyone taking the time to read the tails would be cocked to the left.
WHATEVER!!!!!!!
Cal444 Somewhere, yeyh that was me at the Venetian, fear and loathing! Took them 7 hrs to check me out and they lost my car for two hours but to be honest I really didn't mind because there was a never ending stream of Yummm Yummm to salivate over.
Nice to 'see' you again, cal444! Now get back to work!
Anyway, on topic, I don't think the diagonal automatically sucks. Like cal444 says, they allow more girl to be captured in the frame, which is a good thing in my book. Not that I'd want the entire scene done that way, mind you.
I ecshew anything that calls attention to the movie-making. Party this is pure pragmatism. I don't have the panache of a Fincher sort of visual stylist, so why would I call attention to my rather mundane visual style. The other part of this is that I personally prefer films that are constructed in a way that lets me forget I'm watching a screen, and trick me into thinking I'm looking through a magic window, or better yet, that I'm right there. I aspire to do the same thing in my work.
C'mon, how hard is it to get a BJ, holding a camera and keeping it straight!!!! Try it sometime. With any luck the angle is better than black and white!!!
In the porn valley not all, "Directors of photography", are cut from the same jib. Most came from warehouses, the bosses cousin, a guy that walked in from the street but knew what a camera looked like and could tell which end the view finder was. There are very few and far between people that know anything about film theory, how to tell a story or even know the defination of a story for that matter, the where's, when's, and why's of where to be, when to be there say nothing of why they should be there at all. If you add these factors to a myriad of others that come with the territory you get what you get.
It's from the first scene (actually outtakes) from PXP's Euro Girls Never Say No 3. Well, with a standing DP and a woman on kneeling on the floor, there was a lot of action to catch in the frame.
Speaking of the boss's cousin, the cameraman that I like the best is Gabriel Zero, Rocco Siffredi's cousin. Gabriel, in my opinion, does a good clean job of capturing the action without the need for jarring edits, or weird angles, or boring close-ups. Even when the take is a long one (>5 minutes) he keeps the camera moving gradually, so the viewer's eye doesn't get bored. He's also good at anticipating where Rocco is going to go next, so the camera is pointed where it has to be to get better footage.
Once your pointing the camera above or below the horizon line (even if the actual horizon isn't seen), the idea of Dutch Tilt gets a little fuzzy. It all depends on how strongly the horizontal and vertical seem violated. I'd say your picture is in the grey area, tending toward Dutch.
It's also an example of a problem that is easily solved with good editing. We wanna see the close-up of the two dicks in her holes, we wanna see the long shot of her body and face, we wanna see a close up of her face to get some idea of whether she's in pain, pleasure, or just bored. Good editing would give us all that (and more!) without seeming fake or interupting the flow of the scene.
And as an editor, I'd like to give you all of that in a cohesive flow that follows the classical paradigm. But that assumes that the director and/or camera guy gave me the necessary footage. Unfortunately, that rarely happens.
All too often I get nothing but still shots from a still photographer doing double duty as a videographer who shoots in one position for two seconds, drops the camera, takes 30-45 seconds to reposition, shoots for another 3-5 seconds, drops the camera, wastes more time moving to a new position for yet another really short clip. The really funny part is that a half hour or so into the scene, the director asks the video tech how much footage he's got so far. Even though the tech replies that he's got 35 minutes, nobody but me knows that only five minutes of that footage is usable.
Well there's only one thing to do! Become Shamu the Producer/Editor!
•As the producer you can be sure only to hire cameramen and directors that are as passionately committed to the Art of Porn as you are!
•As the producer, instead of allowing days (hours?), you can give your self weeks to cut a 90 minute film!
It will be the dawning of a new era of cynisism-free and shame-free porn! Just take this one bit of advice from another producer -- do it with other people's money!
