On men they only occassionally show penises, and then only limp. Penthouse softcore shows everything on women including labias and fondling. On men they show penises, and occasionally they are erect. Night Vision and all the other lesser known softcore fall somewhere inbetween. The one constant is they never show penetration. Now all of this is how the videos are "intended." Occassionally you might notice a hard dick in a Playboy film, and even some penetration in a Penthouse video, but this was never their intention. Some "softcore" is just hardcore with all the penetration shots edited out. Quite obviously in those cases they are having sex. Some softcore is just simulated. Get one or two of the Penthouse Behind the Scenes tapes and you will see how it is done. The chicks are on the top acting with all their gusto like they are climaxing. Then when the camera stops rolling she climbs down and you see the guy is limp and has been all along. Then you have the mainstream. Some hard-R films accidentally expose the fact the actors were actually having sex, but you have to look hard to see it. I remember distinctly in one of Shannon Tweed's hard-R flicks that it was clear she was being penetrated. ------------------ Bing!! They most likely also have very conscise guidelines about what can and cannot be shown at various points during the day's programming. How does this apply to home video sales and rentals? Got me. I assume this is where state or local governments get involved. I don't think there is a legal definition of softcore, just a set of guidelines for acceptability within each layer of governmental control. But please don't take my word on it. Drew Black: Yes the FCC can only rule if it's a broadcast medium like TV or satellite. But not other mediums like cable or video. Regarding video sales that's beyond the scope of the federal government. I believe the supreme court ruled that if something is "obscene" by local standards, then it may be regulated by the local authorities. So "obscenity" (whatever that is) is not considered protected under "free speech". So that would be up to the locals here. The radio spectrum is considered owned by the federal government and that is why the FCC can set guidelines on that but not videos, it has nothing to do with it being a "public" medium. A city can allow nudity in the streets if it so chooses and the federal government can't do anything about it. This is the important principle of separation of powers between the states and the federal government that is being eroded more and more. Recently I heard of the Presidency giving economic incentives to TV stations that promoted an "anti-drug message" and the end result was de-facto censorship where scripts were submitted for review to the President's minions to see if they had an "anti-drug message". "Penetration" is more of a bellweather between softcore and hardcore for the studios and the consumers. The MPCC also does take into consideration whether the shot of the nude is a close-up or at a distance. It is also worth noting -- That there is no such thing as an "XXX" rating. That was a marketing ploy created by the porn industry. The vast, vast majority of adult films are never submitted for a rating.
