The key to getting good results with a cheap camera is to have a comprehensive understanding of the camera's limitation. Also, the camera is the last step in getting a good image. A $100 investment in lighting and scrims can make a HUGE difference in the quality of your image.
I may rant and rave about how cheap pornsters are about their equipment, but the truth is this a fantastic time. For a couple thousand dollars the average person can have every they need to make wonderful family documents and play around with this medium I love. There's no better way to appreciate the true masters of cinema than to struggle through making your own 30 second video.
