What's the difference between a regular adult DVD and a Director's Edition DVD? I buy a DVD and sometimes, it'll say Director's edition, but is there some added stuff on a Director's edition? And is there a regular edition? And how does a store like AdultDVDEmpire decide which to ship if there are two different copies?

In many cases, the Director's cut is just a longer movie. The longest tape that most companies use is 2hrs 20 minutes long. Tapes any longer than that are more likely to stretch or break.

There are some companies who make movies that are always 2hrs 19 minutes long. Evil Angel is one, Anabolic and Diabolic are two others (but some of their lines are shorter). I've always assumed that these companies first edited a movie for content, which would typically be longer than 2:19. Then they would do a second edit to get it down to the maximum running time.

It appears that, with the Director's Cut DVD's, that second edit doesn't take place.

There are rarely Director's Cut and non-Director's Cut versions of a movie. What sometimes exists is a Collectors Edition (or something like that). Private has done this with a few of their movies. Typically, these editions will have an extra "bonus" disc containing "Behind the scenes" footage or will have something else in the package (like a booklet). When this is the case, stores either have to decide which version to carry, or whether they should carry both versions. They will make that case on what they think they will sell best.

Stores will usually identify which version they are carrying because the prices will be different.

The last situation is one that usually affects older movies. There have been some legal fights over who owns the DVD rights to some movies. So Company A (who may own the VHS rights) releases a movie. Company B, who really owns the DVD rights, stops Company A from selling the movie. Company B then goes out and does a better job restoring the movie and adds things like a Directors commentary. They end up calling the movie a "Director's Cut" even though the movie might be identical to what Company A distributed.

In this case the stores will probably sell their inventory from Company A, before stocking the version from Company B.

About 75 percent of the Directors cuts are no differant then the original version. However, there are some good exceptions! Those are the golden ones! A european version "Directors Cut" would be golden. However if Skeeter and I released those versions thru normal distribution, we would probaly go to jail on an obscenity charge. I think the tour page of my website with the anal fisting, gives people a fair idea!

Bill mentioned anabolic and evil angel.

i've seen some of their dvd movies noted as "special editions" or "director's cuts."
those were the dvd versions with extra footage added ... and the vhs versions would be the standard movie.

hmmmmm, maybe I a m wrong about this, but I always thought that the 2 hours 20 used to be the limitation that came along with VHS (because far as I know the T-160 is the longest running - normal speed - VHS available in the U S of A).

Since DVD beat VHS in popularity, I think this limitation is sorta gone, plus I expect future films to be even longer (like the recent Lewd Conduct I watched yesterday and which was around 3 hours 30).

When i label my movies with a directors edition, this means that this movie is edited as it was intended to be. With the limitations of vhs, many times my movies would have a lot of quality smut taken out of them only to be able to make the 2 hours and 20 min, with dvd i edit the scenes exactly how i want them usually ending up with an extra 20 mins added to the tape. My first scene in cum in my ass 2 was 40 mins long, but the scene needed that because it was so intense.

Thank you all who replied. Especially to Bridgette and Erik who explained why I would prefer to get a Director's cut than a regular one. Now all I have to do is find a way to get the European Director's edition.
