i've just rent Arsenic (Woodman-Hustler) and i can't believe the poor picture quality (and it was DVD)
with my own camera the picture is better !!
i would be curious to know the stuff he works with (Sony ..?)
it's a pity cause the girls don'look bad
woodman must be an asshole (i saw him many times on french tv cause i'm french) and i hope he has changed of camera for 2003 movies (we've got the Hustler movies ten months later in France)
Don't blame Woodman, blame Hustler! I also noticed Woodman movies going downhill ever since he joined Hustler. His movies for Private were always very good with hotter girls than the ones he uses now. I'm thinking that Hustler doesn't give Woodman big budgets he always got from Private and that's why the quality is lacking picture wise but also girls wise.
I hope he will join Private again or better yet......Evil Angel because we need to see some good Woodman movies again, Kruger Park-style.
i'm watching right now another hustler movie named "campus confessions 3" and the picture is better than woodman
i think the problem comes from the camera he uses .
the best picture in the world comes from Germany ,no doubt about this but their camera are huge ones, professional material
something funny about "arsenic": when you choose english language you've got ...the direct sound You don't have scenaristic discussions but the woodman instructions to his actors
Hustler already know about the crappy video quality in many Hustler/Woodman videos. Long time ago I made a complain to a representant of theirs here in the forun. The guy promised to see what was going on and get back to us with his findings. Needless to say I'm still waiting (the guy never came back). ..BTW: If you think The Hustler Platinum videos like Arsenic have bad quality. Don't go near the Hustler XXX or Anal Intensive series, many of those videos are terrible. Like someone already said there are a few videos were the first scenes are ok (average) but by the 3rd, 4th scene the picture quality has gone to hell again. If is not the lack of sharpness in the picture, it is the color totally dull. ..Superfuckers sometimes is decent but still, could be (alot) better. ...Now that I'm thinking about, I have seen VHS looked better that the actual DVD.
What's this new H2 crap if they can't improve on H1. They need to hire professional audio/video engineers/editors ASAP! Or Woodman needs to leave Larry for Red Light or Evil Angel.
It's sad to say that the VHS version of the movie was 1 hex better than the DVD version.

I'm sure Hustler do not give Pierre Woodman's products the treatment/budget they deserve, but why is it that other Hustler lines are pretty good video quality (Mr Beaver Checks in, Barely Legal, etc...)?
Are there non-Woodman Hustler DVDs that are as bad in terms of video quality as Woodman's Hustler DVDs?
We're sorry to hear that you're not pleased with the video quality on some of Woodman's DVDs. We've looked into this matter, and we don't believe that it is a question of our QC process. We have one of the more rigorous QC policies in the industry, and it is partly why we have output deals with both Playboy and New Frontier.
Our only explanation is that Pierre shoots on PAL, and that the conversion to NTSC for our post-production and U.S release creates some quality loss. In the event the titles have to edited and converted back to PAL for European buyers, there may be a further loss. Pierre will soon be shooting on NTSC, in order to head off this problem.
Thanks-the feedback is important, even if it's negative!
Y;know -- I appreciate the customer-friendly attitude, but I have to say that Woodman is one of the lamest pornographers in the biz. I will never understand what the appeal is, when so many great gonzo directors produce so much better product. Why does anyone even care? If he and his kind vanished from the planet, porn would only be better for it.
H2 is a separate company, and is not owned or affiliated with Hustler. LFP is distributing Woodman titles for H2 Video, but that is the only extent of LFP's involvement with these projects.
We are in the process of making major post-production improvements, and will continue to respond to customer comments and requests.
The two paragraphs are completely contradicting. First you says we have no problem because Hustler have perfect QC, and then in the second you acknowledge the quality problem people are experiencing. Go figure...
Anyway, don't blame it on Woodman using PAL. The problem seems to be that you have a crappy conversion between PAL and NTSC, and if your QC process was as good as you claim, you would have seen and corrected it a long time ago.
The solution is not to make Woodman replace all is his PAL video equipment, but for Hustler to learn how to handle PAL correctly. Take a lesson from New Sensation/ Digital Sin. They have just gone to a fully digital postproduction process and they have seen improvements on both their PAL and NTSC based DVD releases,as Head of Production at NS/DS Quinn Roberts wrote here on the ADT forum.
if you don't care in the least about Woodman videos and you pretty much know what you like..what the heck are you doing posting in this thread in the first place!? ..A good rant is always welcome if it has something other people can used as information, you know <<this fucking girl is missing in the video, what I saw on the boxcover is not in the dam video, I wish they die for making video with crappy video quality>> ..but your remarks don't help anybody around here. Give your rant some usuful facts not some subjective opinion that nobody cares about.
Pierre Woodman was one of the best director when he worked for Private because of the high quality shoots he did with the most beautiful girls. Of course I still consider him one of the best but the company he works for now isn't and that's the problem. Tha ambition of Woodman doesn't match with the ambition of Hustler and that's why we're getting a sub par product I think.
Your comments are well-taken, and all we can say is that we intend to continue to improve our post-production. There is no contradiction-it seems most of the problems are being seen from European customers, which is something we can't always control. No single opinion is correct on this subject, but we are striving to improve the end product, be it in Europe or the United States. We are sending sample DVDs to a few customers who have expressed video quality concerns to see whether their response are favorable.
PAL is a better quality than NTSC, but the vast majority of material is shot on NTSC. The conversion process is the primary obstacle to quality right now.
Also, we never said that Hustler QC is 'perfect'-this is an unnecessarily inaccurate comment on your part. We said it was rigorous, which still doesn't mean we have free of problems or complaints, particularly with foreign customers.
Actually I just noticed this myself the other day. I got around to scanning through 2 Hustler titles I picked up awhile ago, one was Woodman's Anal Intensive 6, which had just atricious image quality, and a Precious Pink edition, which had excellent picture quality.
My honest thoughts on viewing AI6 was that I was/am not going to buy any more titles from Hustler Video. After seeing the PP minutes later, I changed my opinion to only cover Woodman's releases, though it's also worth pointing out that particular PP dvd was the first and to date only non-Woodman title I've bought from Hustler.
While it's certainly good to see a representative from LFP here, I'll politely say that you've been tragically misinformed with regard to the amount of picture degradation present in a competent PAL>NTSC transfer.
For an example of a competent, high-quality PAL>NTSC transfer, please pick up a local, US copy of just about anything Mr Woodman shot for Private. I do appreciate your being here though.
Ah yes, just to add an important point - While I am located in Australia, and we use PAL here, all of my Hustler DVDs are from the US, and all of my Equipment is fully NTSC-compatable region-free etc etc, so speaking at least for myself, the Woodman video quality issues are real, and on your NTSC, US-made, US-sold DVDs as opposed to titles transferred (back) to PAL.
I was just hoping to find out what people who like him like about him. I've watched a zillion Private titles back in the day, but the same beautiful girls in a Rocco or Christoph video are far, far more exciting to watch. His scenes are way over-edited for my taste, and the camera feels very "detached" -- I'm not sure how else to put it -- so even though the sex is full-bore, I never get much "heat" from watching it. There's something fake-y and overly art-directed about his movies. It turns me off. What else can I say? I just wonder why anyone cares. Obviously, many do.
Besides, the thread is called "Disappointed by Woodman quality." And I've been disappointed with his quality for a long time .... Well, it's just my opinion, To each his own ....
Skronker, this second post from you is much better if you want to have a discussion about why people like Woodman, though you might be better off posting it in a new thread.
I have to agree with Wally though in that your first post was pretty much just a simple flame/rant against Woodman and not especially inviting to reply to on a discussion level.
As far as the discussion goes. I generally like what Woodman does. I honestly don't much like what Rocco or Cristoph do. Personal tastes. c'est la vie. If you really want to discuss this with me, feel free to start a new thread and quote what I've said here, as this thread is more about the technical deficiencies in Woodman's current output for LFP.
You are right, of course. Sometimes you just feel like unleashing ... Please return to the technical discussion, and I'll take up the sword against the Wood-man another day.
Feel free to send me (andersingenmann@hotmail.com) a batch of Hustler DVDs for a round of European QC on my multistandard TV and DVD player. I have one of the more rigorous QC policies on the Adult DVD Talk forum...
I don't get your comment on foreign customers (European PAL users?) having more problems. Do you make make your DVDs in both PAL and NTSC versions, and are the PAL versions more prone quality issues that their NTSC counterparts? Logically the Woodman DVDs would then be less prone to problems because you could do a straight DV PAL to PAL MPEG2 conversion.
Thanks at least for your positive comment on the quality of Precious Pink, if not Woodman.
As for being misinformed, the comment on conversion loss was to bring this up as a possibility. If you are suggesting that there is no chance for this to be the case, then we would have to disagree.
You last comment is of greater televance, and we don't want to have our Australian customer base unhappy. We're striving to improve further in this area, and we hope you'll offer positive comments when you notice these improvements!
Most welcome with regard to the PP DVD. I got it on a kind of whim combined with a good boxcover (just checked - it's Vol 8). I was also pleasantly surprised by the quality of the scenes themselves, so while I may not buy Woodman again for the moment, I likely would pick up another PP or two if they're all of that quality.
With regard to the "misinformed" comments, I agreed with you that this may be the reason, but my thoughts were that it's a poor transfer done by Hustler/LFP than anything inherent in PAL>NTSC transfers.
I'll explain my reasoning: From everything I have gathered, Woodman shoots for Hustler/LFP in much the same way he did for Private, in that he does most of it as/with his own little production company, then gives you a finished product. When his product was published by Private, the transfers (in both NTSC and PAL) were great, crystal clear, etc). Since moving to Hustler/LFP, the transfers have visibly dropped in quality (have personally only viewed NTSC).
Based on that, with pretty much the same thing as when Woody was with Private going in but a poorer picture coming out, then it's a reasonable possibility to suggest that Hustler/LFP's PAL>NTSC transfer methods are not all they could be.
As for your Australian customer base, I think our only option for your DVDs is to buy US/NTSC imports, whether we do that by buying locally (thankfully the smut shops import 80% of their stock from the US and Europe) or from mail-order sources, such as we find here via Adult DVD Talk. So keep the quality high at home and we'll get it over here.
The way I read your postings, it seems that you can solve your problem pretty easy, since you are getting the Woodman material on DV PAL tape. If you are editing the original DV PAL versions on a computer, then you can do the PAL>NTSC conversion right on the computer too. The editor can convert the movie DV PAL file to a DV NTSC file with cheap tools like these:
-http://www.dvunlimited.com/ - less than 100$ -http://www.canopus.us/US/products/ProCoder/pm_procoder.asp -http://www.apple.com/dvdstudiopro/newversion/compressor.html - if you are editing on Final Cut Pro on a Macintosh
The problem for many companies seems to be, that they relay on analog Beta tape as an interchange and conversion format. But Beta tape is no longer needed in a digital postproduction process from DV camera to editing to the finished DVD.

Good point.
I still wonder, if the problem is so easy to solve, why Woodman's DVDs passed Hustler's "quality control" =if there is such a thing= ?
It's bad policy for a company to release crappy products on the market. If it does, many a new customer who buys his first DVD from Hustler and gets one of those badly mastered Woodman DVDs won't ever buy a Hustler DVD again!
If they put their name on a product, they better make sure their product makes the grade technically... I would undestand a small new studio making those kind of mistakes, but Hustler?
Also does Pierre Woodman really care about how his movies are being released? He should, because he will get the reputation of being unable to deliver crisp good quality video.
