I looking for guidance in converting DiVX AVI files (playable on Quicktime) to WMV/another file type playable on Windows Media Player, preferably a version that doesn't require a visit to a third-party's site to download codecs.

My target audience will be playing these clips hosted on a corporate (maybe intranet) website; they won't be technically savvy people and there is no technical support personnel to walk them through complicated configurations or software installations.

My budget is $0, so I need to do this with freeware, preferably on Mac OS X, but I have access to a Windows 2000 box. I've searched Google and a couple of other sites, but I don't see a clear way to do this. I spent most of yesterday afternoon diddling with ffmpegX as well as QuickTime, but I wasn't successful in generating files that can be read by the OS X version of Windows Media Player.

I am not looking for RealPlayer solutions; this must be Windows Media Player oriented because of the latter's ubiquity.

DiVX AVI files will already play on Windows Media Player. I use it to play them all the time.

Although windows media player will play DivX, the DiVx codec will need to be downloaded and installed first.

Microsoft's windows media encoder is free and will convert DivX avi movies to wmv format.

Funny, my Mac's Quicktime 6.5.2 installation was aware of the DivX codec and played the DivX AVIs and .mov's okay. It was my Mac's Windows Media Player 9 that couldn't play these.

I brought the files to work. Lo and behold, the AVIs played okay with a DivX-aware WMP, but not QuickTime 6.5.2. I removed the DivX codec and the video died; WMP checked for the codec on the Microsoft servers but couldn't find it.

I will try to install Windows Media Encoder on my work system tomorrow. I am really trying to get this video to play for a non-DivX aware media player, both WMP and QuickTime.

basically .avi, asf, etc are all based on the microsoft mpeg4v3 codec. divx 3.11 is a direct hack, xvid and divx5 are derivative. they're essentially mpeg-4 files based to a varying degree on h.263. quicktime is the same deal, but apple makes you pay to encode with their mpeg-4 encoder. it's actually pretty common to get decoding merits and filters screwed up, but you should be able to play them with wmp.
