In mainstream Hollywood it is still uncommon for performers to be successful directors. The same was true of XXX Hollywood, back in the day. Legends like Henri Parchard, Gerard Damiano, Bobby Hollander, Alex deRenzy, Suze Randall, the Mitchell Brother, the Dark Brothers, Andrew Blake, F. J. Lincoln, and Anthony Spinelli directed the majority of adult releases, it seemed.

Today, in an era dominated by gonzo, performers are more likely to be sitting in the director's chair. John Leslie, Tom Byron, Lexington Steele, Brandon Iron, Jules Jordan, Christophe Clarke, Randy West, and other present and former talent now rule the roost. If sales and fan feedback mean anything, making an adult movie that can arouse the more jaded 21st century adult consumer seems to be a talent that comes easier to those who have had experience in front of the camera.

Recently I was watching Ginger Lynn's "E. True Hollywood Story". During one of the segemnts Suze Randall made the following comments (with a laugh) that I found very interesting, "We thought we were artists making real films. We didn't know that people just wanted us to get to the sex." (or something to that effect). That got me to thinking. Are features even necessary? Does anybody watch them without using the fast-forward button? Should every release be gonzo? Does great sex equal great porn? Do perfomers make better directors?

As with anything, it depends on the individual. Rocco is a first rate director. Lexington steele is a first rate performer and a mediocore director (enough with the damn outfits already...just shove your dick up her ass). Erik Everhard has serious skills in both departments. It just depends.

One more thing, I have yet to see a female director that can deliver the goods. Maybe when it comes to "couples" stuff, but when it comes to Raincoaters, guys know what guys want. Please don't mention Lizzy Borden. If I want to be grossed out, I'll watch Animal Planet.

I think the guys who were performers in the days of film-only movies have better potential to make good features because they are more aware of the technical aspects of lighting, production values, etc.

John Leslie and John Stagliano fall into this category.

Tom Byron and Rocco Siffredi and Joey Silvera were also very established as actors in feature adult movies before they ever picked up a camera.

However, I do question the amount of performers who think it's a piece of cake to just pick up a camera and make a quality piece of porn.

As for female performers turned director, I really respect Tina Tyler, who has made, among others, some really good bisexual movies.
I hope to someday continue making the crossover into the director's chair, both into all-sex movies and features. Considering that my sexual tastes seem to run pretty similar to that of some of the most serious raincoaters out there, if I end up being able to handle the technical aspects, it might be OK.

Some porn actors can become better directors if they understand the technical aspects of shooting a video and if they can maintain objectivity and overide their libido and their wanting to get involved. I often find that directors who direct and star in their own titles have weak scenes when they are in the scenes. Christoph Clark likes to star in his own videos and he likes the foot and toy fetish. But after a few such scenes, I get bored and prefer that Christoph Clark stay in the background. Yes, he has a new cute girl to fuck, but he should direct and let other actors fuck the girl.

A director should star in his own videos only if he can maintain the heat. Rocco is usually successful as an actor and director. Jules is okay in some of his videos, but I generally prefer to have him direct and film and let other studs do the dirty deed. Jean Yves Le Castell, Brandon Iron, and Erik Everhard are okay as they try to give the fans what the fans want and not try to get off on the girl for their own gratification.

So in summary, actors can make good directors if they remember to direct and NOT try to get off with every cute new girl in one of their own titles.

Tricia, I'm glad to see your take on this. Seeing as that you easily have the edge on any of the rest of us. I know that I like the 2 Johns' stuff a lot, as well as Tom's and Jule's, but I don't know what difference it made that they were actors. I mean, John Leslie's vids are a whole lot different than anything I ever saw him act in.

Just that they have a good feel for the technical stuff.
I think the former performers also are more sensitive to how difficult it is to perform in a video. A lot of directors who never performed just don't get what it takes to pull off a good scene.

I do prefer it when a director isn't in all of his own stuff, although my sexuality allows me to enjoy seeing Rocco in his vids! I recently got one of the dildos molded from his dick, just to see if I'd be able to deepthroat it.

I also think that working for a variety of other directors gives the people perspective on what it's like to receive direction. In an industry where pretty much nobody has gone to film school, it's a big plus to have gained a lot of experience first-hand.

Tricia, I appreciate your input on this.

I don't think it is an easy transition from performer to director.

I have watched Tom Byron when he was making the transition, and there were some pretty bad quality movies that were done. (Yes, I own the DVD's) But he stuck with it and makes some pretty damn good stuff now.

I watched Vince Voyeur do the same thing as he progressed throught the learning curve. The stuff he produces now are vastly different from when he first stepped behind the camera.

Aposterula's original question, "Do performers make better Directors?". I would have to echo RoccoFan's remark - it depends on the individual.
