I always read reviews before I choose my films. Reviews, plural, never just one. Even if I like a director or a girl, what's to say that the particular film I'm after doesn't suck the big one? They're very important to my porn selection.

well I happen to be a pornstore clerk and people regularly ask for opionon. I find that its easier just to ask them what they like to see. example would you like a plot or just action? then we work from there.I find most people are stupid, they want to be told what to watch. For them they get an Evil Angel movie cause they are expensive and i work on commision. :D
I think when reading a review you must know a little about the director and the stars.
lets say you watch Rocco does Prague. i have heard from other that there is just way to much anal sex in the movie.. well duh its Rocco.
or an even better example would be one time a customer asked my opionon on who i thought was the nastiest female in porn was. I answered Belladonna. so he went and bought a movie with her in it,
long story short he didnt like it and thought she was tame,i told him thats because it was a vivid movie and most of thier stuff is oriented to couples and its very tame.
I redirected him to a movie bella did with nacho and he now worships her. :)
so basically reviews are crap and your pornclerk is vastly better!!!

As a Director and Producer of Adult content, I have been very influenced by reviews, particularly ones by astute reviewers such as Bono and Astroknight. They have been helpful in pointing out problems in production that I have taken great pains to avoid in future productions. They might mention certain angles that could have been better, or positions that could have lasted longer. They might not know why these things happened the way they did, but they prove to me that these guys watch very closely. I must say that knowing that they take this very seriously, keeps me on my toes on set, and in the edit bay. Thanks for watching.

yeah maybe so but thats still a matter of taste. i hate it when the camera man sits on the dick and nookie all day. but some guys like it.i think showing a gapping ass is a bit much but some people like it.
thats why more movies should allow the viewer to choose the camera angel. i have gay men constantly complaining about watching straight movies and the camera man is glued to the female.
Im not no big porn producer or male star (tho i pray to the jules jordan god that i maybe!)
but i hear what the average guy and gal says on the street and the people who buy porn are far more knowing then anyone.
so critics are just a small part of the entire equation.

Another astroknight classic, although not as funny as his 'Love Between the Cheeks' line:

On Doctor MaCock from Hustler:

Who Should Watch It : Anybody wanting fun setups with plenty of anal action

Who Should Avoid It: Anybody who wants a movie where people understand lighting

Tell it like it is astro!

Sorry in advance for the long-winded and belated contribution to this thread. :)

I've been thinking about this alot--not just from reading the thread, but over the past few years.

I've written a fair amount of in-depth reviews for ADT over the last 4-1/2 years. I've had a fair amount of pretty cool opportunities become available to me simply because of my reviews, and let me just be clear about this: I've taken advantage of, and been thankful for all of them.

In the past, I've written reviews with an eye primarily toward the consumer--my "honest" opinion, as best I can give it. But I've also had a secondary awareness that studios and directors might read them and, albeit only slightly, perhaps be influenced by them.

When I look at it now, though, I'm really not sure how beneficial reviews are. I mean, certainly there will be some consumers and producers alike who might find value to them, I suppose. On the other hand, there are a vast many more who won't. When you think about it, how does reading someone elses subjective reaction to a movie REALLY assist you in determining whether YOU will like it or not? Like Bill has said repeatedly over the years, technical elements, running times, and scene pairings are really the only definitive objective information you can provide in a review. Beyond that, it's all a matter of taste, mood, and the mystical alignment of stars that determines whether somone will like any given movie on any given day.

I'm busy with a lot of other things these days, but I'm sure I'll still be writing reviews now and then. I am torn about why I do it, though. Maybe it is just an egotistical exercise. I don't know. I like to write them because it's fun. I like to analyze and make fun of porn, its conventions, and myself all at the same time. I like to express my enjoyment of it, and my frustration with it. I like to come up with different ways to say exactly the same thing--and while I do all this and more in writing my own erotic stories, they require LOTS of thought and effort, whereas reviewing is far easier, and a nice break that still keeps my writing mechanics in practice.

That's why I write reviews now-a-days. In truth, it's why I've always written them. But as someone who has taken a break from them, and just sat back and ENJOYED PORN without analyzing it for a while, I can also say that my tastes as a reviewer, and my tastes as a consumer can be vastly different, and therein lies a serious problem. I'm not even sure _I_ respect my opinions as a reviewer.

Anyway, it's complicated--about as complicated as trying to explain to someone why I find a particular girl attractive, and why I find another perfectly pleasant looking girl anything but. As much as I'm able, I try not to analyze that kind of stuff anymore. So with that in mind, I'll just write my reviews. Other people can determine whether they are valuable, or useless. It's not for me to figure out.

I DO know that, as a consumer, I don't use reviews as a selection tool anymore. I don't need them, and when it comes down to it, I'm better off without them. I'll read some of them for entertainment value, or because some of ADTs reviewers really have some insightful and well expressed opinions about things, but that's about it.

To tell you the truth, I'm not sure if I were an adult movie producer / director that I would want to read too many critic's reviews of my work either. I guess I respect those that do, but on the other hand, I respect those that are just trying to do the very best they can, according to their own sensibilities, even more. There's a great dirth of that kind of commitment to craft in porn, but I have faith that it's out there--to what degree is all in the eye of the beholder.

I may cite directors like John Stagliano, Andrew Blake, Tony Comstock, Brandon Iron, Joey Silvera, and Jake Malone, and even Max Hardcore. You may cite someone entirely different--and we'd all probably be right.

Like I said--it's complicated.

As a consumer, I do pay attention to the reviews that I actually read.

On the other hand, I never know what I'm gonna like until I actually see it. I've read glowing reviews more than a few times and positively hated the movie when I saw it. People have different standards and different ideas about what makes a good movie. Just because a guy reviews 20 movies a week, I don't consider him an authority on what's gonna do it for me.

I look for basic info in a review. How's the picture quality? Is the lighting and sound pretty good? Other than that, I can't really count on anything anyone says to be just my cup of tea (even if it sounds like it from reading the review).

I appreciate the time and effort that many reviewers from ADT put into into their reviews.

My two cents, based purely on a few observations and a lot of speculation: there is a smattering of companies represented in the online community who actually listen to what the consumers and the reviewers have to say and make changes based on feedback and constructive criticism.

There are people involved on both sides of the camera who care about the quality of their work from a technical perspective.

There are a few people fucking for a living who actually enjoy it and are good at it and whose joy in the act of creating erotic tension through tease and dirty talk or just flat out fucking and sucking and loving it is a real turn-on.

And then there's everybody else.

I certainly spend a lot of time reading reviews, but I must say, I am OFTEN disappointed with the movie even after it got 10 out of 10. Now maybe for some; hot women, and pretty scenary will do it for them, but a movie with just vignettes and no imagination has gotten to be a bore.

Even looking at most of these, I'm like, are you serious??

I like reviews that give me basic information like :

1) Who is the stud(s) that the girl is doing the scene with.
2) What sexual positions will they cover during the scene.

For example, I love the cowgirl position, so if a scene doesn't cover this, I probably won't buy the DVD.
If I don't like the stud, I probably won't buy the DVD.

I usually don't rely on reviewers to tell me how good a scene is, because I find that I disagree so often that it's better for me to rely on my own judgement of the girl, the stud, the director and the company.

Let's take the thread in a new direction:

Assuming reviews make that much of a difference, have any reviewers had approaches made by stars/directors/cronies in order to influence the reviews they write?

I'm talking bribes, overtures, gifts (other than the screeners themselves) or (ahem) sexual favours maybe?

Have any reviewers had any amusing responses from stars or directors or companies pleased/unhappy with reviews?

Yes, I've had both. Although it's certainly nice to hear from insiders who liked your review, it's very important to me not to be in any way influenced by those comments. As a reviewer, the first and most important duty is to being honest, not to pleasing the producers. I much prefer getting email from fans who enjoy my reviews than industry insiders.

I've had, eh, maybe two insiders that got quite testy with individual reviews that I've written, or things I've had to say about their work. I don't think it's appropriate to mention names, but one particular person was very upset that I gave his movie 2-1/2 stars when he claimed that no review of any of his movies had ever been that low. He went on for a couple of emails about it, even though I never responded to him. He really went whole-hog in presenting evidence that would discredit me, including defending a particular male talent that I didn't really care for at all. When it comes down to it, reviews are about personal opinion.

I've always tried to go out of my way in reviews to repeat again and again how whatever I write is just my opinion, or my taste. Your taste may vary. It took me a while to get over what he said to me, because I'm a sensitive person, but I did not respond to his emails. I re-read my review and decided that it spoke for itself. Even though all he was able to see was the bad stuff, there was plenty of good stuff in there too. I think that was an example of someone taking what I wrote, and in some cases what he THOUGHT I wrote, but didn't, far too seriously. I guess he just needed to get it off his chest.

Like I said before, though, I can totally understand how it could be very difficult to read critical reviews of your work--especially something you've put your heart into. I guess that's just the nature of it, though. You make decent porn, it's going to get reviewed. It must be a constant battle not to take those opinions too seriously. I understand--I really do. Unfortunately, my loyalty isn't to the producers, it's to my own sense of taste. Whether that's useful to anyone ELSE or not is a question that I can't answer.

i like to see to reviews before watching a film, but i don't let a bad review influence me too much. ultimately, if i like the cast, i want to see the film. after all, if the reviewer doesn't like it, that doesn't always mean i'm not going to enjoy the film either. worst case scenario, if i see several bad reviews, i might just hold off watching the film for a while, but not to the point where i would decide not to watch it at all.

I've received my fair share of feedback but I do this because I love putting in that title which when watching makes me want to write and write about what I'm seeing. First and foremost I'm thankful that such beauty can be seen on film and I try to convey that in what I write, maybe not always as good as I could and sometimes I might be less critical than others but that's just my style. Not sure how long I'll review but I've been doing this now about 4 years and it's been a blast.

Nope. Being happily married, I'm the absolutely wrong person to offer sexual favors and to grab today's review as an example, I don't think that Robby D. can suck good enough dick to have gotten Hard Candy 3 up to earning 5 stars even if I did really like this. I suppose I should add that, please Robby, if you read this, don't take this as a challenge!
Yep, I've had both. I will admit that there have been a couple times where they've influenced my reviews a couple times. After chatting with them through e-mail, there have been a couple times where comments I made didn't necessarily come out like I wanted them to and I modified the review because of it. Whenever this does happen, there will be a note in the review that the review has been changed from its original form and why it was changed.

As for studios, stars, and performers, about the only influence it has over me is to check out more of their work. If somebody cares enough to drop me a line they'll often get an e-mail back from me wondering what some of their favorite movies are so I can hopefully check them out. If it's technical complaints on how a studio does a DVD and they say that they're going to be working on them, I'll almost certainly check a few more of them out over time to see if they really do improve them or if they're all talk, and there's a chance that there will be comments in other reviews about them making improvements on their DVDs.

As for hate mail, yes, I have received a few of them that were fun. I had one director, who I'll leave nameless, stating that I should be maced and who apparently was trying to track me down due to some of the comments I made about him and his movie. He sent several e-mails about what a bastich I was, and I actually kept them around to amuse me. Sadly, I think I accidentally deleted them...

Some of my favorites, though, have been by the fans. I've had a few couples e-mail me thanking me for my reviews and how they've helped them explore their sexuality a little more watching movies I've reviewed and asking for further recommendations. Those are easily the best e-mails, and I've actually kept a few of them around so that when I find something else that reminds me of those couples that I can e-mail them to check those movies out.

The best reviews are written for the same reason that the best films are made: because the reviewer loves the genre and feels like they have a personal stake in the movies they watch, just like a director (ought to) feel like she has a personal stake in the movies she makes.

Reviews do make a difference. I have seen a lot of porn so now I know which movies or directors I like. In the past years I have read a lot of reviews before I bought a movie. I have bought movies because I've read a good review and I haven't bought movies because I've read bad reviews.

Now I've also started writing reviews.

Well, I usually appreciate your reviews, so you must be doing something right.

Okay, there might be viewers who will buy *any* movie with Wanda Curtis in it, for instance. Even if all she's doing is walking a dog in the background of the tease for someone else's scene. In that case, they won't care about a review.

There will be testosterone overloaded young guys who don't give a shit which girl is in a movie or what they're doing as long as they're naked and there's at least one cock involved. They won't care about reviews.

But I think most viewers want more info than just knowing one star is in the movie somewhere, or that naked chicks get boned. And good reviewers can definitely provide more objective info than just technical elements, running times, and scene pairings.

Maybe this depends on what you mean by 'technical elements'. I really appreciate reviews that go into a fair bit of detail about scenes. I like fairly hardcore porn - anal, DPs, multiple partners - but I don't like gagging, choking, drooling blowjobs. I don't like slapping and throat-grabbing. I hate head-stomping. I don't like cumfarts, cum-gargling or most other cum circus tricks, although I do like facials and other general cum-splattering, although the full cum-glazing of a face is too much for my taste - I still like to see that beautiful face. Etc.

My tastes in these things haven't changed in years, so I really appreciate it when a reviewer tells me that the scene does or does not have various specific elements. I have been saved a few thousand dollars over the years by knowing ahead of time that movies had too many elements I'd dislike. It won't matter to me whether or not the reviewer likes things I dislike, what's important to me is whether or not the reviewer describes things well enough that I can decide to buy or not.

There's plenty of subjectivity that I find interesting, too. I don't enjoy seeing women passively endure hard sex, but like seeing them enthusiastic about it, so I appreciate comments on that but take them with a grain or sack of salt - one reviewer will say that a girl is really getting into a scene when another says she just looked like she was constipated.

Lighting, sound and other production aspects aren't very important to me, in that as long as they're good enough that's fine. But when they're rotten, they can ruin a scene, so I do want to know if they're really awful. I don't care that much about extras, but it's good to know if there is extensive BTS.

But to me the most important stuff is what I reliably get from Astroknight and Bono and several others in the ADT archive - comprehensive description with a sense of humour and appreciation. It's fun to read, and means I don't waste money or wanking time on porn I won't like.

I don't know Tony, a review which delivers a much needed serve to a film shoddily made can be great to read. I'm not condoning waspish reviews, but if the film isn't up to scratch, and the director and production company have put it out in the market, it's fair game to get shredded.
On reviewer I like is Howie - he doesn't take crap from directors who expect fans to swallow it. I don't always agree with him, and have at least bought two films in spite of his ripping them and loved the movies. What I like is that he holds himself to a high standard with the porn he watches, and doesn't muck around in his assessments of the movies. If Howie gives a film a high score, you know it's worth checking out, and he hasn't let me down yet.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad I was able to influence someone since I'm not a prolific reviewer (and I've slowed down due to work) but my rationale has always been as follows:
Prior to my reviewing, ADT was a great source for my buying decision. And so I wanted to return the favor in helping others make buying decisions. I take great care in not giving grade inflation in my ratings and I hope that it shows though I'm curious on which ones you disagreed with me. However, with the advent of online rentals and the general lack of replay value, a few years ago I started gearing my reviews to the rental crowd since that and now VOD are where the distribution channels are growing. I know what I like to see in my porn and sometimes the reviews come easy but not all of the time.
To all reviewers, keep up the good work. I love reading the reviews. I think I might be one of the very few that have posted more reviews than posts here at ADT.

They make a huge difference for me. if it wasn't for Rog and Den and LSB I cannot imagine how much money I would have wasted..not so much based on simple talent reviews but real technical, shooting, cast info, or media issues. If you all are listening..no you won't get a % of my savings..but sincerest thanks anyway.

I originally started making purchases based on the female talent & director coupled with favorable reviews. I was then able to weed out reviewers whose likes and opinions contrasted greatly with mine, often at the cost of wasting >$20 on a disk I discarded after a single view.
Now, if a movie isn't reviewed by someone on my "cred list" (such as the aforementioned gents), I defer the purchase. My choices are not typically swayed by mere opinion, but by the reviewer's ability to accurately describe the scenes and production values. Trial and error phase is completed.
As such, I have not bought an "unreviewed" movie in 5 years...thank God for the Internet

Yes reviews make a huge diffrence. THANK YOU for writting them.I may not agree with any of the reviews but its still a diffrent aspect and twist on it i may not have noticed so when i sell it to a consumer I can tell them exactly what they wanna know.
When i shop for porn i research EVERYTHING.If Jrsl doesnt approve it i wont buy it.
lol
seriously tho good talented reviewers like astro and bono are invaulable to my shopping and knowing whats in something. may not agree with them but i do learn from them.
THANK YOU REVIEWERS!!!!!!

Reviews can be very helpful. They can tell me whether or not the scene ends in a facial/oral cum shot. For me that is the difference between not renting and renting and possibly buying the movie.

I think you pretty much described my point-of-view also. I kind of use reviews as a guideline, but that's usually about it. They can help me weed-out performers, directors, and acts I don't care watch, and maybe some technical stuff, but that's about it. There can be subtle things to a scene that I don't think I've seen any reviewer relay to me, so the end decision will almost always have to my own.
When it comes to reviews I always start with Den. If I'm still unsure, I usually go in order with Astro, Rog, MyLyons, and CJ. There are others too, but I'd say those five tend to like who and what I like.

I will say this - I have a rental account at Adult DVD Empire as well, and there's one movie that keeps getting pushed down on my rental list because a customer review says it's a poor transfer to DVD. I'm kinda waiting to see if it will get redone at some point.
I will also say that I wrote some reviews for that site that never got posted. Some were due to technical errors, I think, but others were because I was critical of the movies. I find that irritating, because it's not like I said "This movie sucks, don't waste your money", I just commented on them. Like when I wrote about "Mrs. Bitch", I said I liked seeing McKayla mess around for half an hour but that I didn't like that there's no actual sex in the movie, or at least no intercourse. Since this was at a point where the site's revamp had been completed and my other reviews were being posted, I figure they didn't like me saying something bad about the movie.
That bugs me. Wouldn't they rather have a customer learn about that ahead of time rather than buying it and then complaining to them about it, and potentially even losing that customer??
When I had an account at Sugar DVD, their policy was no reviews that criticized a particular performer would be posted. I can understand where they were coming from, but let's just say I thought they were way too picky about it.

I left unmentioned in my previous post that I have probably spent less than $50.00 in porn for the last 1.5+ years. I used to spend at least $50.00 per month on porn previous to that.
I have so much of it, both in VHS & DVD, that it would take several years to watch it all, if I viewed two a night.
The other thing is, that my wife and I have had, our now 21-year old grandson living with us for the last year and 9 months. My wife does not care much for porn (anymore). Watching TV/DVD/TIVO/ from anywhere other then our bed has now gotten to be impossible for her. Don't get me wrong, she does waddle out to the kitchen every so often, but lest I digress just let me say watching porn just complicates my life to much. So buying more of it no longer seems justifiable. I now have been spending my "private" time glued to my computer mouse, down loading, I so hate to say it, free porn, while trying to hold both my mouse and my dick in the same hand.
I never would have believed that my life would cum down to this.
