Avoid at all cost: Anything by Max Hardcore; anything produced by a European studio other than Private; any video that's more than three hours in length; any porno whose box cover you're sure that even you could do a better job at putting together; anything with a sticker that says "As heard on the Howard Stern Show"; any foreign import unless you've heard good things about it first (since most German/French/Japanese/Hong Kong/wherever that you are able to buy aren't as good as you think they are)
Anyway, as you can tell, stars aren't the most important thing to me. But that doesn't mean I don't have my favorites. If I'm undecided about a video, but the cast list has a star I like (such as my current faves Inari Vachs or Stephanie Swift), that will seal the deal. But it also works the other way: if there's one or two people I can't stand, I'll generally pass on the video rather than have 20-50% of material I have to fast forward through.
Finally, I'll buy and rent videos when all else fails by how good the performers look on the box covers and backs. Yes, I know that's pretty risky, but since there's more truth in box advertising compared to the late 80's and early 90's, it's not that bad. Besides, I figure if they can't make the girls look good in the pretty girl photo shoots, then there's little chance that there will be much improvement in the video itself.
Soooo, to wrap up this long answer to a simple question, by using the above criteria, I've gotten really good at cutting through 90% of all the crappy videos and only buying and renting stuff that has a decent chance of being good. To give you an idea, I can go into my local adult store and flip through a couple thousand box covers in under an hour to come away with five rental choices for the weekend. Compared to that, picking good DVDs (or recognizing that there aren't too many) is pretty easy.
