Do you folks ever try to phone people over the internet? What do you use, how has it gone? This is a total poll, but it is distinctly a tech poll. I need some advice on how to "VOIP" effectively. If you have a PDA/Phone with WiFi, it basically lets you auto-switch calls (on the fly) between WiFi and normal cellular bands. So I can use it like a normal cell phone and then when I get near my home or office, the call switches over to VOIP mode via WiFi. What's even better is that if the call originates at a WiFi source, even if I later end up leaving WiFi range and switching to cellular, I am not charged cellular usage minutes. Pretty cool technology...I'm really thinking about getting it! As for signal quality, I'll agree that it can vary. Sometimes, it's better than a regular landline. Other times, it can get pretty bad. Typically, I only use it for business conversations with associates, family, friends, etc. For normal customer calls, I still revert to normal telephone lines. [Link] |

I can make an unlimited number of calls anywhere in the states and canada without extra charges. But since I am on their residential service, I am allowed 5000 minutes a month--which is way more than I ever use anyway. They give you an adapter, to which you plug into it your regular old landline telephone. So you can use your telephone without your computer. You can call any cell phone or landline phone. They also have it setup so you can use a softphone like X-Lite in case you prefer to use your computer with a headset plugged in. A SIP address is also provided so if a free user of a service like callcentric, each of you can call each other. I think you can also use an IP phone like ones from Cisco and Snom and I want one of these phones. [Link] |
