The hotness of the talent, the genre of the scene, and the bare minimum of production value will probably pay off the same amount than if you had really good and sexy acting, a really erotic and compelling story, and scenery that is different than just a bed or couch filmed with an iphone or gopro.
Now I know there are lots of exceptions; however, I think in many cases, I think they believe they have to push the envelope with different sex acts like anal rather than make better vaginal sex scenes. And who knows? They may be right. I'm neither an expert nor an insider. Maybe they do get more viewers and revenue with anal rather than a really good vaginal sex scene. For my dollars though, I'm going with vaginal.

I have to agree with you, it has been suggested that all vaginal sex is "vanilla" and I think that's not the case. I have seen many vaginal scenes with a lot of intensity and fast pace, that I personally don't categorize them as "vanilla". I've also seen pretty boring anal scenes, so I personally don't categorize a scene as "vanilla" just because it's vaginal.
