I don't think the words "quality" and "VHS" should be mentioned together

I mean really, what's the point of VHS, you don't get the extras you get with DVDs, they take up more space, you have to waste time rewinding them and you can't just jump to a section of the tape in a flash like you can on a DVD. And when was the last time you heard of a portable VHS player

Really though, the days of VHS are gone. Best thing I can say is trash them, or sell them EXTREMELY cheap. Maybe like a buck or 2 a tape, but you have have already gone that route.,Maybe doing a lot of the, lets say 10 for 5 bucks or something.

Regardless, if you think it's quality porn ya have, I would hope you could get it on DVD to replace it. I know I had some nice VHS flicks, but I said fuck it and put them in the trash. I never looked back.

Tough call man, good luck!

The only VHS that I've held onto is stuff that isn't available on DVD. And since I only buy new DVDs that have commentary versions, I'm not really looking to pick up new VHSes (except in very rare circumstances).

Strike 1: Porn is pretty ephemeral to start with.
Strike 2: One man's quality porn is another man's trash.
Strike 3: VHS is big, clunky and outdated.

I myself prefer tape to DVD. Especially from the golden years. The graininess of the video and the sound of the motors spinning when you fast forward through the boring scenes reminds me of when I first started watching porn. Don't get me wrong I really enjoy DVDs, but to choose the same title on either vhs or DVD; VHS!! I know what you mean by not wanting to trash them, it's almost like throwing away a baseball card collection (even if you don't have any high valued cards). If you find yourself not being able to depart with them, keep me in mind.

VHS has pretty mch died a painful death like vinyl records. It was tough, but I finally made the switch years ago. From a recording standpoint, VHS is probably still the more reliable of the two. The tapes are too clunky and take up way too much space though. Not every older film has been transferred to dvd though, so a lot of stuff that originated on VHS has been discontinued and probably won't be back. Something to keep in mind. You just may have some stuff that can't be found anywhere else...you never know.

There are guys out there who crave older and especially rare films. Might be hard to find them, and I doubt they spend a lot of time on Ebay. If you don't Yahoo, sign up now. Find and join any yahoogroup that features older stars, whether a particular one or lots of them. May take time, but there are people like Tinylucky who still enjoy the older "classic" stuff. If any older performer in your films has a website, find it and join. You just may have some stuff that isn't available anywhere else.

From a practical standpoint, you should think about transferring some of your films to dvd. The technology isn't foolproof yet, but it'd preserve some of the stuff you may wanna keep, and won't take up nearly as much room.

But there are probably 25 really great titles released each month - most porn fans don't need to look earlier than 2003 for some fuckable ladies.

That being said, I've seen some great shit 5 to 10+ years ago on VHS and would deeply regret not seeing that stuff. Hold on to it in some shape or form.

Sales of vinyl isn't dead at all actually. Some local [invalid URL removed]markets are up, some are down, [invalid URL removed]but all are alive. Some manufacturing plants have their second live, becourse of the increase in sales. It's a much smaller marketplace now, mostly DJ's and audio-enthusiasts customers.
Transferring is foolproof: I did it. Using simple software like Pinnacle Studio 10SE and Hollywood FX 6.0. You can edit out those nasty ads so often used on VHS porn tapes!

You could always get one of these....

[invalid URL removed]

You can find them used on ebay for around $500. Just put in your VHS and you can capture with firwire right to your computer. Then you could use adobe encore to add some chapters and a menu and voilà you now have your VHS scenes on DVD.

I have well over 400 adult DVD's. Ranging from the classic to fairly-new releases. I keep all them inside one of those zippered nylon storage books.

One of the great things about switching to DVD is that storage has been reduced from a closet-sized storage room down to the size of a really big book. I keep the video cover sheets in a seperate file book.

Instead trying to hide several footlockers filled with porn, I can just hide the entire collection in plain view.

$500 on eBay ... ?: buy [invalid URL removed] one of these for $50 new . Invest in quality, but don't spent any more than necessary.

Oh: moving around of topics all over ADT is hot indeed, so I vote for the Tech-forum ...

You'd be surprised at how many VHS tapes we still sell. Even from titles available on DVD. Not everybody has a DVD player, not everybody has internet, so we still have customers ordering tapes from us by phone or mail (the oldfashioned paper kind).

I would doubt it, for a VHS to be played the tape has to make physical contact with the player, not so with a DVD player. That's why with VHS, the more you watch it the more the picture gets crappy, and eventually the tape just gives out and it's destroyed.

For a tape it's actually better to be rewind once in a while (as it is better to archive it vertically/tape under and rolled max to the start/end). Having physical contact in the player is indeed a disadvantage and shorten it lifespan.
Carbonate discs (CD/DVD) are prone to rot (see explained [invalid URL removed]here, and ADT'ed [invalid URL removed]here), which according to studies will shorten it's lifespan (depending on storage quality).

It has been a while, but if a VHS tape is practically being given away and it's a movie with a low probability of ever being transferred to DVD, or would be transferred to DVD by a company that it is anyone's guess how much of the disc will be playable in one's set-top player even when brand new (cough, cough, New Machine), then sure, I would pick up a dirt cheap VHS tape that way.

There are still a few VHS titles that "fell through the cracks" and never made it DVD. Some of the early BJ-only series' like California Cocksuckers and Dirty Little Cocksuckers have many volumes that are not on DVD.

California Cocksucers has released volumes 1 & 2 on DVD and a 4 hour compilation DVD. But I would prefer to see all the volumes I missed in their entirety.

BTW, I am looking to buy a VHS copy of [invalid URL removed]Dirty Little Cocksuckers #4 (Link to forum post).
If I were to luck out and actually get my hands DLCs #4, the first thing I would do is transfer it to DVD using my software & hardware tools.

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem. I have a ton of VHS stuff that i can´t get rid of. I´d rather keep it than sell it for nothing. If i would have known that most of these titles would be available in the future i would have never bought them but i have a couple of titles who never made it to dvd (yet). Others made it but were discontinued. Another thing is ... there is at least one company who (allegdly) dares to edit their VHS Stuff and then puts it on DVD (in a less perfect manner)

The turnoff of VHS for me is the time it takes to watch a film; the fast forwarding through a boring scene, and the rewinding to go back to a favorite scene.

I'm all for the nostalgia and what it was like when I first saw porn (Vanessa Del Rio in Play Me Again Vanessa, featuring Taija Rae). But guess what? That's out on DVD, I watched it, and I was able to go straight to my favorite scene (the construction site orgy) without waiting.

I'll always have a love for VHS and still purchase if I absolutely can't find in DVD. We're all part of that past. Loyalty you might say. Some of the best film viewing moments(porn & mainstream) of my life were because I had a vcr(vhs format). I chose VHS over Beta as it recorded more hours. I also had bought my very first VHS tape ever(of my HS Graduation)before I ever had a machine to watch it. All of this hullabaloo about the quality between the two formats over the years, but I couldnt see the difference. I have so much great stuff in VHS that if I ever attempted to transfer to DVD, by the time I get finished DVD would be a dead format replaced by something, most likely, much smaller.

Sometimes, when I find an old Ray Victory title or some other 80's zero-budget not available on DVD. Last time was in Gent, Belgium, in a second-hand store which carried a few obscure overstock porn. I'll dub the VHS on a DVD-R in these cases with a combo I bought especially for this case, because I can't find any nostalgic pleasure in fast-forwarding. Chapters all the way !

I know what you mean. I have quite a bit of old VHS stuff too.

Actually DVD may already be being replaced. I think there are two newer formats that were just recently introduced. I think one is called blu-ray, but can't remember the name of the other. There are some who think the quality of dvd isn't that great actually, and feel it'll eventually get replaced like you suggested. The newer stuff out right now is extremely expensive like all new technology usually is. Don't think you can record on any of it yet though. Cd's were supposed to be replaced by Mini-Disks years ago and it didn't happen.

Space and convenience both are significant issues for me. I store about 600 porn DVDs in a compact metal case. 600 VHS tape would take an awful lot of storage room. Also I don't have VHS readers on my computers but they can all read DVDs, including my 12" iBook.

Thanks for that. I probably should check the technical area more often. While dvd players and recorders have finally stabilized now, not sure if anyone really knows how long the technology or especially the disks will last. Even though the quality of VHS does fade over time, a lot of my older ones actually still play quite well. Amazingly so actually. Not sure if my dvd's, actually the burned ones will still be playing almost 20 years from now like my VHS's.

Most practical way for most to do it, especially those on a strict budget. The first dvd recorders I had were all basically crap. The recordings would freeze sometimes and the disks would be ruined sometimes. The technology seems a lot better now though. I use a Panasonic DMR-ES15 that I got for under $200 at Best Buy. I've only had it for about 6 months, but so far not 1 problem. Its a simple set-up and actually quite easy to do.

Adult DVD are so dirt cheap why bother with VHS. I don't know how porn companies stay alive its not that they sell tons on each movie as it is.

Hardly difficult - DVD is an extremely poor media (or should that be medium ?)

I own close on 500 discs - which I look after very well. I store them in DJ sytle metal cases that have hanging sleeves with cloth in the middle to keep the discs protected and apart. When handling them I NEVER touch the playing surface.

Yet despite this I have had some 40-50 discs suddenly develop problems where they just suddenly go pixelated and then stop and refuse to play on - this ranges from Adult titles to Mainstream.

Often the last time I played the disc it played flawlessly but the next time it just doesn't want to know.

There has been at least one thread here on ADT where several others have had the same problem - DVD as a media is a f***ing joke.

Oh yes and often these discs that stop playing look 100% blemish free on the playing surface.

Buy comparison in 20-25 years of using VHS I hace only had about three tapes at most get eaten by a VCR.

The massively superior image quality that is claimed is "Emperors New Clothes"

I hope whatever replaces DVD is considerably more robust

Utter bollocks and as so often because the electronics manufacturers tell us the latest thing is the best many sheep/lemming like buy in to it.

If vinyl is well looked after and played on a good system it will out perform CD by a country mile.

I have a large collection of adult films on VHS. I have transfered most of them to DVD myself rather than buying the DVD versions released by the studios. The simple reason being that some studios don't give a tinker's damn about the quality of their DVD releases. This is especially true of golden age films where little effort is often put fourth to restore/preserve the quality of the film or come up with good or even relevant extras. Not to mention that a lot films from that era have not been released on DVD, or the DVD versions are edited or censored. I have a lot of current releases (from the last 3-5 years) on DVD, but I seldom bother buying the old stuff on disc for the reasons mentioned above.

VHS did wear out by being played if it was being played enough. Maybe not a tape that one person owned and didn't play all the time, and would watch all the way through and then rewind, but popular rentals or children's tapes that kids would watch over and over again were another matter. If a tape had a part that would be frequently rewound and watched again, and rewound and watched again, such as say, the Large Marge scene of Pee Wee's Big Adventure, that part of the tape would start to wear out first. But at least there was rhyme and reason for why a tape would wear out where it did, unlike a DVD that you have no clue why it will suddenly get skippy and/or pixilated on a certain part of the disc.

This isn't much of a problem. You can just press eject, inspect the DVD, and wipe any smudges that may be causing the problmem. If it doesn't go away, then the DVD would most likely be defective.

With the VHS, you might have to worry about the tape getting jammed in the machine and then it would be a major problem in trying to remove it. You either end up crumpling the tape or, even worse, tearing the tape. You then end up with a completely worthless plastic brick.

DVD has some problems, but I consider them to be only minor problems.

I have a massive collection of adult videos that I've been gathering since the early 1980's. I estimate that I have well over 5,000 different titles from many companies long out of business. I have them all stored away in various rooms and closets but I will watch a few particular faves from time to time. I'm a pack rat by nature so its always been out of the question to get rid of them. Besides the vast majority of them are out of print and will never be released on DVD so I consider them valuable collector's items of a porn generation long since gone.

There are some out of print VHS that I might go out of my way to buy, but I have noticed as well that it is easier to just fill my trashcan with old adult movies than sell them on ebay or find willing buyers for the ones I want to get rid of. A better option I've found is trading tapes/exchanging tapes with others. You may get a mixed bag, but somehow I just feel someone should enjoy them instead of someone picking through the trash......And what have you got to lose, even if you transfer a couple to dvd.

I think there is a difference between the average person transferring a tape to a blank dvd, than it is with a company transferring an old tape for sale. From what I've heard, companies would prefer to transfer a master tape as opposed to a sold copy. Something about it not being able to make a clean copy, especially since a lot of older films have footage that may/must be edited out. I think the problems come with having to edit out certain parts for legal reasons and getting a smooth transition afterwards.

I guess my only real worry is certain films being lost forever. A lot of older films have been discontinued and are basically gone forever. The majority probably will never really be missed, but some good stuff has been let go. Probably because the old heads never thought porn would get as huge as it is now, or that newer media like dvd, blu ray, or hd would arrive. Time moves on, but some parts of the past should be preserved somehow. A simple VHS to dvd transfer seems like the perfect solution.

You and I are going to have to agree to disagree on this subject - I had "The Incredibles" play perfectly one day - then the next week go blocky and then shudder to a halt.

I ejected it and inspected it - 100% pristine - so I gave it a wipe with a paper tissue anyway - from centre to edge - not radially and it still spluttered to a halt at the same place.

As I said elsewhere this only happened to me approx 3-4 times max in over 25 years of using VHS - this compares with somewhere between 20-35 DVD's in approx 6 years - you do the Maths .
This is where we will have to disagree the most as I said earlier or possibly in another thread on the subject I think DVD is a f***ing joke - only it isn't funny when your movies stop playing for no reason - and they called it progress !! As a character in a sitcom over here in the UK would say : "Progress my arse"

I just bought some VHS that was not available on DVD. I like DVD for the sole reason they take up less space, but they are to fragile. A small scratch can totally ruin the Dvd and make it not work or skip. VHS was very reliable but bulky.

Still looking for some of the Eatin at Dave series on VHS but no luck. I agree trading or selling VHS is not easy.

I don't see my collection of DVD's as jewels that I'll keep and pass down to my heirs. I'm well aware of the fact that DVD's will eventually degrade. If they do, I'll just replace them with new copies or I'll probably embrace the next generation of video media.

DVD has trumped VHS by its quality, by its video capacity, by the extras it can provide, AND by it's ease of storage. I'm hoping that the next generation will be even better.

Out with the old, In with the new....

As long as HD and BR isn't a real commercial option right now, I think we've to work with what we have. DVD isn't that bad after all.
To be able to enjoy your VHS tapes, be keen to use a solidly build (ie. metal) drive, handle and archive tapes with care.
To enjoy DVD's years on end, keep the discs clean (don't use water!) and also the drive (especially the lens). Rot will happen now and then, unfortunately. Have the drive and lens cleaned regularly to avoid pixelation and/or brake-down.
