I was watching Stormy Daniels on Night Line the other day when the host went to one of those Porn trade shows. He was talking to this guy who said the average viewer doesn't want to watch 2 hour dvd's anymore. That the Dvd is a thing of the past since you now have the internet and can pay by the minute. I think that is crap but the host did say that the porn market is down compared to previous years.

I compile my own comp DVDs of select scenes that I edit myself to remove boring parts. For me porn DVDs can be boring which is why I select the stuff that does it for me. I make 3 to 4 hour comps, the quality of the original footage may not be that much better, so no dip in quality on my personally edited DVDs.
Not everyone will take the time to do that, but I do, saves time later of fast forwarding with lubed up hands. I don't think there's many DVDs I've watched all the way through, maybe one, DMJ6, because I listened to the whole commentary.

I guess that means I'm not the average viewer because I still wnt to watch 2 hour DVD's. I like it better than watch porn on the internet simply because DVD has better quality and I can watch it on my big screen, porn doesn't look that good on smaller monitor like mine so I have no idea why they're hyping up internet porn especially streaming porn which you can't save on your harddrive and watch it whenever you want over and over again without paying for it again like with that DRM stuff for example.

I can't remember liking every scene in the over 5,000 videos I have seen. Ultimately I would prefer downloading and paying for a particular 20 minute scene after viewing a 1 minute clip and cutting out as many middlemen as possible and therefor lowering the price to less than a $1 a scene.

LOL
I do the exact same thing and thought I was the only one. There is nothing better than watching a highlight reel of your favorite scenes and moments in porn all on one disc back to back.

Personally I hate watching porn vids on the computer. For one my computer screen is smaller than my TV screen. And two, I like using a remote to fast forward and navigate more easily through a vid. Also I prefer DVDs because I don't want to watch tons of small clips. I want to see everything, scene after scene and pick out what I like. Plus I like the convenience of having all my DVDs ready if I ever need a good porn vid to watch. I throw away the cases and sleeves and just keep the DVDs in a 250+ case DVD folder that I flip through. I have two of them, with around 500+ DVDs at around 4 gb's each. To get that much porn on a computer would take forever, would be impossible to navigate through and organize and would be dumb because you'd have to constantly back it up or be affraid of losing it. And what would you even back it up to? DVDs?
So might as well have the DVDs in the first place and save yourself some time. Sure you could pick your favorite scenes out but you'd have to almost know that they are great scenes ahead of time. A lot of the time, porn is discovered as being good. You might buy a DVD for 1 scene and turns out another scene was better, with a girl you've never heard of.

See, that's an accurate summation but in some ways it shows that things are little different to the time you stuck small change into a peep show machine to watch a loop for just enough viewing time to permit you to do the deed.
There's an audience that concerns itself with bang for bucks, value for money and such like, i.e. the pure efficacy of a movie as an aid to onanism, and then there's an audience that actually wants to see a movie that's a decent piece of work too, and no doubt all shades between.
So tell me who exactly is the average porn viewer? The person major sharp is referring to reckons it's the former, essentially the web site subscriber who watches it one 15 minute whack at a time, or is it the business guy watching a Vivid flick in his hotel room?
I've tended to feel it's the latter, or rather more accurately that it's the case that the average porn consumer is someone who watches relatively little porn, casually picks it up now and then, perhaps for free on the web or maybe the odd DVD, and doesn't really bother contributing to forums on the subject. I think that hardcore consumers who each purchase large numbers of discs or intensively surf for smut are actually in the minority.

Well I would say that most internet subscriptions and on demand cable box purchases are sold spur of the moment to horny guys who likely feel guilty afterwards. They pay, do the deed and later regret it because they just paid $10-$15 for a video/subscription that they don't get to keep long term. That feeling will kick in and over time they will recognize that feeling of regret and will be hesitant on future purchases. Should I buy it on demand? Hell there isn't a BTS, if there is a bonus scene it's not included, it's not exactly the complete version and may even be edited! You know in some on demand vids they edit out cumshots! Crazy to think but yes you run that risk of getting an edited version.
With online subscriptions, again you are left with a PC littered with porn and again there is that guilt. Do you know how many guys delete porn on their PC on a regular basis? Probably thousands, because you buy a PC with the intent of being productive on it. And as you start downloading porn you can't help but wonder, what if someone sees it, what about viruses from TGP sites, etc.
So I think those alternative avenues usually bring on more guilt, whereas there is already a certain amount of guilt associated with viewing porn with some people. Over time those consumers will be horny and will be right on the verge of joining a site or will think about buying a vid to download and will stop and say..."no, last time I regretted it..better off going to some free sites instead". Since they are already on a machine that can get free porn, that regret will likely push more of them to free porn. My point being there are some casual one time buyers but repeat customers is rare and that is where the real money is I think.
I have stacks of DVDs and I don't feel guilty for owning them because I know at some point I may want to watch them again. Having a large mix of scenes, I may come across one I didn't like before. A girl may remind me of some new girl I seen the other day and I can fantasize about her. I may rediscover good porn in the DVDs I have later. And I'm less likely to throw out DVDs out of regret of porn remorse and I can keep my PC more clean, fighting the urge to visit TGP sites since most now have spyware/viruses littered into them.

Unfortunatly I do have a lot of porn on my PC and I hope I don't have to take it to the shop in the future because of all the porn I do have. And when I've only paid on average 12.00 per DVD I don't seen why anyone would want to chuck it for the internet.

I don't bother with internet porn at all dvd is far better in terms of quality and the televisions you can play it back on. If I have streamed a rare film that I want then you have to get the software to chapter break it anyway. Plus you get all the artwork and photography with a dvd which I like otherwise your collection looks very bland.

I think this is nonsense. But I am not the average porn viewer. I am a member of a minority, too few women watch porn.
I want to watch feature movies, and even if I watch some
"only action" DVD, like "Mayhem", then I watch the whole DVD in one run.
But one point may be true, especially some labels, like Voyeur, JJ, Anbolic etc. had overdone it. Most of the fucking scenes are just TOO long. 15-20 minutes, it gets boring and it is the greatest mystery to me, how the guys are doing it.
Its more like an attempt for the Guiness Book of World Records. Scenes should be shorter, around 10 min, but I dont want to see only 30 seconds short scenes with blowjobs.

I watch all of my porn in viewing booths, that way I am focused for hours...yes it is exspensive, but having 20 to 60 videos to flip through is erotic and arrousing...never knowing what may be playing exsposes you to material you would not select yourself while you are in a state of high arrousal. I take my loads seriously...like to jack off to a variety over the course of 2 to 3 hours...
Also, when I am done, there is no porn laying around the house/computer. No distractions while I am doing my thing. I have spent $50K to $100K in viewing booths over my life. Seen it all. I don't buy any dvds or do I subscribe to any sites. I hold off for as long as I can, take a trip...blow my mind watching 20+ videos "simulataneously". It's the real thing or mind bending trip on porn..nothing in between. No fast forward single dvd viewing.

DVD sales are definitely down. The average for the majority of the porn companies, is that they are down 20 to 30 percent. This is a fact. The sales will most definitely continue to decline. A couple of the Evil Angel directors are barely breaking even on some of their lines and making up for it on VOD and other internet avenues. Evil Angel is one of the top Gonzo companies.
Lots of the smaller companies that were doing 2 thousand pieces last year, are now doing eight hundred to thirteen hundred pieces. Another way to sell more pieces is selling them for alot less. Red Light, Zero, Third Degrree sell large volumes still. Some of their movies wholesale for as low as four or five dollars. It is brutal out there. The survivors will be those with the most revenue streams possible worldwide.

I have to agree with the guy on this one. I myself have not purchased a DVD in about five months, only because like mentioned by the guy, I can see most of the scenes I like on the net either by VOD or other websites. I have found that I have honestly only watched a great porno flick maybe four times and that's it. In the last year I have viewed about fourty movies and honestly have not watched one of them twice. The amount of films these ladies make, literally makes it necassary to go to the net, you would spend a fortune compliling there movies and then run in to the occasional bad one and be stuck with it.

I do *not* buy porn sight unseen. It's something I rent first then decide to buy. Either a gonzo that works on multiple levels for me. Or it's David Stanley. He is the only director who creates porn features that I want to watch more than once.

Maybe the average viewer doesn't want to watch 2 hours of porn at once but that doesn't mean the average viewer wouldn't like to own 2 hours worth of porn for watching in sessions. You jack off, you cum, you fart and fall asleep. Later, you're horny again and if you just have a 10 minute clip you bought by the minute, do you really want to jack off to the same thing twice in once day? It's like eating cereal for every meal.

But with VOD you're not stuck with a 10 minute clip, but a selection from 1,000s of videos for the ten minutes that you want. I definitely see the advantage, there are only a few gonzo DVDs every year I would consider worth owning.

I prefer the quality of DVDs, but the internet is catching up. I prefer quality over quantity. I may watch 30 minutes to an hour in one sitting.
DVD sales are down? Well, are internet website sales up? Or is porn down over-all???

I've said it before and I'll never stop saying it for the next five years
Most Porn Consumers Do Not Have The Cash And Privacy For Internet Porn Viewing
The Man On The Street Loves His $59.99 Radio Schack Portable DVD PLayer So He Can Watch His Favorite Starlet Get Semen Squirted In Her Face Anywhere There's Privacy
(i.e., in the bathroom, closet, bushes)
+Even though there's constant guarantee of improvement around the corner, Internet Porn picture/sound quality still sucks compared with any DVD player.

I double up by renting online (Bush DVD) at $35/month for 6 DVD's at a time. Also I subscribe to Teeny Bopper Club, which includes at least a dozen other sites. Overall the arousal quality, for me, is better at Teeny Bopper, etc: younger legal girls who get off on the sex and more often ride on top, my personal fave. But the rentals give the big screen experience and my wife likes this better. Sometimes the arousal quality is great on the rentals, but often very mediocre, even after "researching" with the info provided. There's much less of going through the motions at Teeny Bopper.... And no downloads, so nothing saved on my computer.

porn on the computer is the shit. take your laptop when you travel & have your porn files hidden somewhere & when you are too drunk to go fish some tuna, then you just wank off in the hotel room.

I prefer DVDs. I don't like movies on the computer. Adult internet sites are to expensive and I get a headache if I stare at the screen too long. A DVD is #1 for me.

I agree with legman, I still prefer buying DVDs, after reading and researching the various titles. And I love the presentation of a DVD, it just makes it more special than a simple downloaded clip, but call me a "fancy nancy". Also, even mainstream DVD sales are down, due to the fact that major films and series have had their big releases, the public purchased them and that's it for many. They are not all going to double-dip for Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, but I am not worried about the format vanishing anytime soon.

I still prefer DVDs myself. They aren't that expensive and you can watch them whenever you want, FF to favorite parts, and it doesn't tie up space on your computer.
Also, to the guy who says he has spent 50K to 100K in viewing booths: do you know how much pussy you could have bought with that kind of money?

Sure DVDs look better, but if quality was the determining factor in porn we'd still be watching porn films in theaters. Video looked like shit and it beat the hell out of the 16mm and 35mm films because it was cheaper and convenient, just like internet porn is today.

Great Thread, lots of honest people.
Being on my own, I download porn clips just as I am a collector.
Then I also rent DVD's and burn the ones I like to my PC and keep them on several hard disks that I take out and put in a drawer.
I order the odd DVD that I really like eg Adriana Sage and Jenaveve Jolie and Jasmine Byrne via mail order.
I like watching DVD's on my computer as I can watch a scene at a time (half an hour a night is enough for me.) I can stop it if the phone goes and reverse if I want to see a bit again. Using my mouse is OK for me.
A remote mouse would be a great invention !
As for whacking off, I rarely do it infront of the screen, I got caught by my old girl friend once.
So what I do is so screen dumps of good bits and print them out on my colour printer so I jack off in my bedroom at my own pace.

I don't like DVDs for my pr0n addiction, PC files are IMHO way better
It's easy and quick, I don't have to wait through silly messages (anti-piracy or commercials) I don't have to seek the scene I want, it's really fast with the mouse
I just HATE having to switch DVDs, you know you're watching Jada Fire and then you want good ol' Jayna Oso or Keri Sable or Sierra Sinn or Roxy Jezel...
It's tedious

Kinda funny how nobody's outright admitted to illegally downloading vids. I bet just about everyone uses file sharing now and then, if just to find out about the new starlets people are talking about. I guess that's a total no-no here with all the industry types around...
Myself I'm pretty much totally computer playback only these days. With a decent set up it's just easier and better and more private than messing about with loads of DVDs and mags. Even my dozen or so bought porn DVDs have been ripped to PC. Part of it's convenience (my music CDs are all on my media centre PC as well), part of it's paranoia about family or friends coming round and seeing that gangbang DVD in the player...
That doesn't mean I just like short scenes to get off quickly, loops of money shots or that kind of shit. If a movie's good then I'll watch the whole thing, and I like softcore erotica just as much as gonzo porn. There's not much action in a Playboy flick like Girls of Hedonism, just beautiful women well filmed, but I love to sit back and watch that kind of thing from start to end. Then there's fun porn like those Blazed and Confused vids that Penny Flame did for Shane's World, where the behind the scenes stuff is just as much fun as the fucking. I like a bit of foreplay and anything that shows the personality of the performers will keep my finger off the fast forward button.
I've bought some VOD content, but the restrictive DRM and often low quality puts me off. I don't want to have to log in to a site and stream a low res movie in my web browser. Not when I've got my PC hooked up to a big HD TV, and nice media centre software to organise and play stored files. Give me downloads with the same quality and freedom as a DVD, with all the extras, and I'd buy a hell of a lot more. There's less incentive not to steal when the thieves actually get something better than the people who pay.
These days most of my porn spending is on sites like Suze.net, Twistys.com, DDGirls.com, etc. I think they're generally pretty good value considering the content, and it's not like I have to keep on paying if the updates aren't worth it.
Individual model/pornstar sites can be cool as well. From what I've heard individual performers get a better deal from signups to their personal sites. They get what, 50% or so of the $20-$30 per month? Not big money but probably better for them than money spent on VOD or DVDs from distributors...
As for the guy who's spent $50K-$100K on porn booths... Personally I can't think of more of a turn off than jacking off there, give me the comforts of home, a nice couch, a big screen TV and no time pressure. But whatever turns you an I guess... Still, I thought I was a sad bastard for spending about 5% of that on porn sites. Now I feel very slightly less of a sucker...

As for me, the last two years of trips to the porn store I have been disappointed each time. I would wait longer to go back, and every time I was not happy with the selection. I am not sure, but I have a feeling that I am not the only person who feels this way, and this feeling must contribute to some of the declining sales. I haven't been to the local porn store in about six months, and I'll probably go back some time in 2008. I guess what I'm saying is simply this, most DVDs produced are poorly done, and for the few good ones, I am never sure how good they will be. The last time I went to the local porn store, I left empty handed, because I didn't trust some companies, didn't like some of what they are selling, and don't like the new trends in porn.
Furthermore, I have noticed that some companies have packaging that is difficult to see easily, or is very distracting, reflects light, and simply is irritating, so I ignore those due to a lack of patients.

I think you'll find a lot of single men (and maybe women) utilizing internet porn, but people that want to hide their purchases prefer to pay with cash.
