In an effort to fill in some big gaps in the review library, I will endeavour to write one review of a Dorcel title per week (at least for a while). Anyone aching for any in particular?

If you like Laura Angel in VMD titles, you have to check out both Harcélement féminin and Alexie & Co . I have no idea if these were released in the USA and if so, under which title. That is something I would like to see: a list of original titles matched to their corresponding English/American titles.
OK, my first review is posted. I chose The Panty Thief to satisfy Gold_member and Denver Don. I will attempt to pick a Laura Angel for my next one for Lou. Would you prefer Dangerous Woman or Dirty Deals ? Thoughts???
And for Walter Burns: The original title of The Panty Thief is Le Fetichiste
Hey abc I enjoyed your review of "The Panty Thief". I do have a question for you though. Who would you compare Alain Payet's directoral style to if you had to?
P.S. I liked your review of "Rush" as well. I agree with most of you comments, but I was still able to take some pleasure in it. I was begininng to think we had the exact same taste for a second after reading your review of "Faust".
Glad you liked it GM! As far as Alain, he really has his own style. I guess if I were hard pressed, I might compare him to early Christophe Clarke, although Alain is far more polished than Christophe ever was.
In some ways Payet reminds me of Adamo, but he doesn't use the artsy effects. I'm really just commenting on his ability to convey the beauty of the female body.
Yeah, it's really too bad. Devon is a hot little ticket. I'd love to see one of the great directors take a spin with her!You liked it that much too, huh? Yeesh! What a waste of an incredible talent pool!
I think that its been discontinued. Some stores have been listing it for over a year with cover and it isn't listed on the Vivid site. Action-DVD never emailed me back when I questioned whether they really can get it in the ship time they list and I've been holding off purchasing since Vivid has such a reputation of cutting films to fit in the extras. Maybe it was discontinued due to Wicked releasing the Dorcel line here in the states, if so I hope they release it soon since the other Dorcel discs they have released have been excellent that I have seen.

Payet's work for Dorcel is hardly indicative of the man's style. Nowadays, he is usually just a hired gun and his work for VMD only reflects the house style of the company, that was set by Michel Ricaud and Marc Dorcel himself. I am willing to bet that "his ability to convey the beauty of the female body" is not so much his directorial touch, but mainly the work of the cameraman for almost all VMD productions, Serge de Beaurivage. If you want to learn about the "real" Payet and his own unique style, you have to check out the titles he made under the pseudonym John Love. In the early 90s, he became known in France (well, the French porn industry at least) as the inventor of the so called "hard crad". It is a mixture of typical, vulgar and crude French humor combined with extremely hard sex scenes. His "masterpiece" in this genre is La doctoresse a des gros seins . I can also point to his work for different companies to make my point. Compare his work for VMD with that of Blue One and Colmax, and you will see the difference.
To emphasize my point that Payet's directorial touch on the VMD movies has to be judged very carefully, look at the following two pictures, that were published in "Hot Video". They show Payet "at work" on the set of the movie La course au sex .
That is right. He fell asleep during the shooting of 2 different scenes. The caption in the first picture says it all. Freely translated, it says: "Not even a DP (with Daniella Rush no less) can wake Alain Payet."
Wow! Thanks for the info Walter. I appreciate that. Perhaps you are right and it is Serge that makes the difference. Whatever it is, they do a damn good movie! I always thought it was Payet.

Yes Hot Video keeps on hinting he's sleepwalking through his movies, but then I guess many porn directors are mostly in for the money after the initial enthusiasm fades...
He's also directed movies for other French studios like Blue One and Colmax. Under the pseudonym "John Love" I believe he directed stuff for German company Magma as well.
As for his "hard crad" period (read dirty/trashy) I don't particularly care for it but at least he (and the actors) seemed to enjoy themselves.
One last thing, Payet is said no to be particularly fond of Eastern European female talent, which he finds bland and lacking in the acting department, unfortunately he's got to make do with the casting the studio prepared for him most of the time. This maybe why he sleeps through Daniella's scene...
I know that one of the comparisons I made for GM was of Alain and early Christophe. Maybe the reason I thought that is that I am comparing two VMD directors. If they both used the same cameraman (Serge) and other support personnel, perhaps these are the folks that really deserve the credit. I don't know! All I know is that somehow this witch's brew works to turn out some awesome porn!
Next review will be Dangerous Woman with Laura Angel.

Reading back my own post, I believe that I was a bit too harsh on Payet. I guess you have to take at least 3 points in consideration, which speak in his favor:
1) Let's not forget that the guy has been directing porn since 1974 and with very much success. He must be doing something worthwhile. Furthermore, I suspect that by now he has seen everything, so who can blame him if he takes it easy now and then and relies on his crew, which is very capable I am sure.
2) His work for other companies than VMD displays a greater personal touch. Sure, his work for Colmax and Blue One is not as polished as his work for VMD (again, I believe that de Beaurivage is the cause of this), but it is more "on the edge". I sometimes prefer this "rougher" work (by rough I don't mean sexually rough, but stylistically, and that is a deliberate artistic choice of John Love, not a lack of artistry) to his more polished but sometimes rather dull work for VMD. Check out titles such as Prison , Cargo or La dresseuse . The VMD title that comes closest to the sensibilities of John Love (in contrast with Alain Payet) is the very good Les nuits de la Présidente .
3) Lastly, the pictures I posted really don't do the man justice. He was clearly not on top of his game during the shooting of La course au sexe . He just makes too many movies per year and I guess he was exhausted. Looking at the pictures, you can see that he was not in very good health. Compare his body volume, for instance, in the picture below, which was taken on the set of La jouisseuse , the new Melanie Coste vehicle. He looks much fitter in this picture:
Nice initiative aybesea, we got to have more people reviewing porn made in Europe.
Any title featuring Laure Sinclaire would be nice, I have seen most of her movies. But it was a long time ago and Id like to see someone else perspective on her movies. I am biased though, I really dig Laure Sinclaire.
BB - Absolutely! And for the record, I'm pretty partial to Laure myself. I'll put a Laure title on deck for after next week's Laura Angel review. It's great to see so much interest in EuroFeatures. Hopefully some others will join me in my efforts cause even though I have all of the US Dorcel's, I'm always looking for more great EuroPorn!
Citizen Shane is available in its complete 115 minute version on Marc Dorcel's own DVD label. Like most Dorcel releases, the disc is NTSC, region 0, dual layer and includes a choice of dubbed soundtracks. There is a rather weak English mono track in addition to a powerful French stereo score. Picture quality is quite good, although it does seem to suffer at times from typical PAL-NTSC conversion artifacts (I wish Dorcel would release more DVDs in his native PAL format!). The animated menu screen is very nice, showing snowflakes falling over an image of Anita Rinaldi. Definitely worth watching, if only for the presence of Anita, Draghixa and Christophe Clarke before he became obsessed with anal gapes. Most of the sex scenes are fairly short which allows the enjoyable storyline to flow without the usual 20 minute interruptions, giving the video more of a Golden Age feel to it.
I bought several other Dorcel titles a couple of years ago, including a few starring the lovely Laure Sainclair. I found the overall quality of the discs to be exceptionally good, most of them were dual layered with a high data transfer rate and well designed menus. I must say I also prefer Dorcel's boxcover artwork to the generic Wicked Pictures graphics used for the US releases. Among my favourite titles are Les Nuits de la Presedente (starring Laure, directed by Alain Payet) and La Princesse et la Pute #1 & 2 (Laure Sainclair & Roxanne Hall, directed by Dorcel). The image quality on these DVDs is quite breathtaking, having almost a 3D impression and helped by some excellent photography on the source material. In fact the picture is so good, it's almost like watching the action through a open window, except with better lighting!

Btw, if Vivid's Citizen Shane DVD is out of print then you had a lucky escape, because the boxcover gives the impression of another hatchet job complete with fake multiple angles!
I have just submitted this week's Dorcel review... The Dangerous Woman . The original French title was Harcelement au Feminin . It is a killer movie and I hope this review peaks some interest. I've tried my hardest to ID all of the girls correctly, but it is possible that I have made a mistake or two. If so, please e-mail me and I will get them corrected.
I wanted to finish this review a little early, since I will be in Vegas for the bulk of the week and don't know if I will have any time to do any reviews while I am there (probably not).
OK - I think my next one will be one of the Laure DVDs for DenverDon. Any preference?
As promised, I have submitted my third vintage Dorcel review. This one is for The Maze (original French title is Labrynthe ) and features the incredible Laure Sainclair.

I read the review and I have one question. What did you mean by this:
"Also, the original French soundtrack is available, so you don't need to do the Private dubbed audio thing here (although an English soundtrack is available as well if you prefer). "
Surely you know that VMD is dubbing almost all of their movies. They hardly use any direct sound at all. I don't particularly remember The Maze (I did see the movie, but despite a first rate cast, imo, it is not one of the better VMD titles that can be found; it is still a good movie, just not one of their best), but the presence of Eastern European talent, that more likely than not does not speak French at all, is a very strong indication why VMD uses lots of dubbing.
What I meant by this is that here in the States, the language track defaults to a poorly dubbed English soundtrack. The original French soundtrack is available as well (the one that is the primary ST on the French release), and in some cases it actually is the real soundtrack. In others it is not. In any case, it is probably better than the English one.
This is entirely a matter of preference, isn't it? I tend to like the movies with Laure and Lea, and I personally count The Maze as one of the better entries. If you don't agree, I would urge you to review all of the Dorcels as well. That way the viewers would have two opinions to consider.
