Is there any way of downloading video clips when they are only available on the site's enbeded Windows media player. I paid to get on a site only to find out that the videos are streaming and not downloadable. Any way around it?

I don't think so. And even if there were a way around it that would lead to the kind of discussion that we don't tolerate around here. Bypassing DRM, or capturing streaming media to your hard drive are forms of piracy.

There are sites out there that provide download (not streaming) services that might be a better solution.

I don't think that capturing streaming video is piracy unless the site's user agreement specifically prohibits doing this. Bypassing DRM is a different matter - the Digital Millenium Copyright Act specifically prohibits bypassing copy protection measures. Not that I agree with this piece of legislation, but it is the law.

Video streaming isn't really a copy protection measure, it's just a content delivery system. If the site doesn't want copies saved to hard drives, it can configure its servers to make this difficult if not impossible. Otherwise, I say copy away, either by fishing the streamed file out of your Temporary Internet Files directory, or by right-clicking the embedded player window to get the file's URL, or by using software such as WM Recorder. None of these methods will do any good with a DRMed file - no potential for piracy here.

I realized what i was asking about, 15 min after I posted. I, by no means, was trying to pirate from the site. But the past few sites i subscribed to allowed full downloads and i was excited to get the scene I was looking for, for a long time. Thanks for the info though. Now I know, Streaming means streaming....

Capturing streams that you've payed for is morally right imo. There are various ways of doing it depending on the type of stream. Some though I've just never worked out and stripping DRM is possible but beyond me and can't be talked about here anyway.

Sure, streaming media makes it, for the average person, "impossible" to download and save the files.
This could be viewed as a type of copyright protection measure.

However, I'm convinced that the biggest reason sites do this is to force you to return to the site, when you want to watch it again, as a way of increasing hits and advertising revenue.
Same for pay sites. If you can't save it, you must continue paying monthly fees if you want to keep viewing it.

Bear one thing in mind...
Even though certain use and copying of copyrighted material may fall under "Fair Use," the copyright holder has no obligation to make it easy to do.

PLEASE NOTE: I have not expressed an opinion above as to whether or not this falls under "Fair Use."
(My inclination would be that it doesn't.)
