So I have accumulated a shitload of porn DVDs over the years. Starting a few years ago I have always copied the images to my computer, so I can search using Windows and I can have random access without rummaging through a pile of DVDs. This worked for me for quite a while because I found that the DVDs offered pretty consistently good quality compared to what I could download from the studios websites.
I recently bought a bunch of old Anabolic DVDs (like 30) out of porno nostalgia for Shyla Stylez, Kimberly Franklin, Belladonna, et al, and have been going through my usual routine. Which led me to my conclusion:
Optical media flat out sucks. One old Anabolic DVD convinces my computer it doesn't have a DVD-RW drive so I have to restart it. Other inexplicable difficulties abound and have with DVDs as long as I can remember - for example, it works one one computer but not another, works today but not tomorrow, etc.
Long live internet downloads. (Streaming sucks too but that's another topic) Being able to get 1080p of Asa Akira getting fucked senseless with a couple clicks worth of effort is porno perfection. And yes, I do pay for it. Elegant Angel gets theirs every month from me.
Rant mode off.

I agree, although I'm aware it's a personal preference, and some people prefer DVDs because they like to have a physical item they can touch and put on a shelf, and contemplate their collection. Also some users are not so tech savvy or not willing to spend 100$ on a media player and get HD video on their TV.
DVDs do have a certain quality standard although I've seen suboptimal or flat out butchered videos. I don't understand why most websites choose .wmv as their favorite format when it's so inefficient. H.264 is just so much better, and now they're starting to talk about H.265 which will supposedly be 67% more efficient than H.264, making UHD or whatever you call it possible.
Also, why would streaming suck? It all depends on your Internet connection, but I can stream 1080p just fine.
I love spotify for music and I'd definitely love a spotify for porn. Being able to stream scenes to discover them, and sync those you love.

I used to have the same problem as the OP with floppy disks when I was in computer support.
They were so unreliable.
Music LP's got scratched
Music cassettes got twisted and broken.
Music CD's crap out
And yes some DVD's may not work.
But we need to keep the DVD physical format as we need to keep high quality
All the streamed movies I have downloaded are poor quality.
I but a DVD here and there when I can afford it.

I can stream 1080p, which means a quality close to that of a bluray movie, and far far superior to DVD.
Streaming is only a distribution method, it doesn't impact quality.
But most people talking about streaming think about those crappy tube sites. Let me be clear: tube sites are usually of very poor quality, and don't represent streaming in general.

Streaming just never seems to work that great for me. I have U-verse at the 12Mbps level, and my download speeds seem fine. But, streaming is iffy for me. Sometimes 1080 is no problem and sometimes the shittiest just doesn't work. When I want to see Tori Black, I want to see her now, damn it!

I'm still a fan of DVDs. Especially when I think back to how cumbersome VHS tapes were in comparison. I've had a Blu-Ray player for a few years but it wasn't until the last year or so I started actually buying Blu-Ray discs because of the price finally got within what I consider a reasonable range. It's actually a great time for discs because of the price. These days you can buy a Blue-Ray season of most any tv show for under 35 bucks whereas it used to cost about 60 for the regular DVD season of a show. With porn you can get most new release DVDs for under 20 bucks.
As far as streaming goes I'm also a fan. I see people here complaining about the quality of streaming. I don't get it. I stream lots of content to my HD tv and it looks as good as a DVD or better. I stream NETFLIX and a bunch of free channels and they all look good. The porn channels I have and tried all looked fine. The only thing that's hit of miss is the free porn channels I get through PORNHUB. Most are okay with a few that are bad quality but I can't complain because they're free and most are meant to be an advertizment for various porn sites.

^ True regarding VHS tapes. I honestly think I have gotten spoiled. I think back to the day of renting / buying VHS and I do realize how expensive and poor the experience was compared to DVD. At one time I had about 20 VHS tapes and I didn't buy any more because I thought they took up too much space.
Realistically DVD is still quite good (assuming it works) but I quickly got hooked on being able to download huge quantities of 1080p with little difficulty. Want every Rachel Starr video on Brazzers? Click-click-click. New vid on Elegant Angel? Click-click-click. Go wash the car or do something else, come back, and it's ready and waiting. Run out of hard drive space? 2 TB for under $100. It's really come a long way in the last ten years.
