Since I care a lot about the picture quality of DVD's in general I must say that I am quite satisfied with the quality the big studios offer in their mainsteam movies. But for XXX DVD's the case is different. I do rent or buy a lot of german XXX DVD's like MAGMA etc.., the quality is quite good.(besides GGG DVD's which mostly have terrible quality with lots of digital artifacts). Mainly the movies are shot in the Pro DV format which gives a superb DVD picture quality, if mastered well. Now for many US XXX
productions the PAL the picture quality here in Europe is terrible. Lots of unnatural colors, blurred etc..
Last week once more, I tried a Tom Byron production and I was very dissapointed with the picture quality. even when the cover stated: digital recorded picture.
How do you rate XXX DVD NTSC picture quality in general?
Are german XXX productions mostly available in the US?

There are a number of German (and Dutch) XXX DVDs available in NTSC format in the U.S. The source material (whether DBM, Videorama, MMV or AVN)is re-mastered into NTSC formatted DVD's and then shipped to the U.S.

The quality is excellent, at least from my perspective, playing both NTSC and PAL DVDs out to NTSC monitors.

As you mentioned, the source format is critical to the end result (Scala has some compilations which are straight dumps from video to DVD, and look it. While DBM has re-mastered older material for its DVD compilations, resulting in much cleaner results.)

I don't know how the conversion/creation of PAL material from U.S. products is done, so I can't account for any difference in quality.

Mainstream movies don't go through an NTSC/PAL conversion. They are both mastered from film. PAL actually does better than NTSC in this regard because of scan rates (24fps for film, 25 fps for PAL, 30 fps for NTSC), although it does cause PAL versions of movies to run 4% too fast.

PAL to NTSC conversion is a problem because you end up with the worst of both worlds. The 480 lines of resolution in NTSC can't really be converted to PAL's 625 lines very well and NTSC's 30 fps scan rate has to be reduces to 25 fps. Whereas, a conversion the other way can work out pretty well, if the movie is speeded up by 8.3%.
