I own an old Pionneer DV-530, hardware modified to be multizone. I bought it three years ago.

I wonder if I would get better performance from a newer generation player?

Only thing I'm really hunappy is the fast forward/reverse which is neither fast nor progressive enough, but perhaps upgrading to a newer model would also improve sound, image quality, ability to read "difficult discs".

What do you think?

The advantages of newer players are the support of CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+/-R/W discs, the ability to play MP3's off a CD (some players), support for Super Audio CD or DVD Audio (high end), and progressive scan for improved picture quality when used with a digital TV. If you don't have those requirements, there's not really a compelling reason to upgrade. The scan functions have not really improved that much; it's really a function of the processing power needed to decode that much data on the fly, and most manufacturers don't see that as something a lot of consumers would be willing to pay for.

Saki which brings the question.
What is a great DVD player to buy if you have a giant screen tv with digital input.

Features I would like to have:
File Level playback of MPEG, MPEG-2, and MPEG-2 DVD compliant files

DVD+/-R/RW compatiable too.
You can put about 19-20 Hours of VCD quality MPEGs onto a blank DVD-R.

I've converted some home videos into mpeg and mpeg-2 files on CDR.
They play fine on my apex.
But seems most other players don't offer playing of Files. they have to be burned as VCD, SVCD or miniDVD. Which I don't want to do.
