How much do you consider a fair price for a brand new DVD? I see DVDs advertised on various websites priced anywhere from £12.50 up to around £27. £27 certainly seems very expensive. Thanks
That's a somewhat vague question as you haven't given much information.
If you can get the same DVD title for £27 at Shop X and £12.50 at Shop Y with the same shipping costs at both then I can agree that £27 is very expensive.
Now if you're talking about different titles but sold from the same place where the economies of scale result in DVD 1 being more expensive it's produced in smaller quantities and/or it has higher production costs compared to DVD 2, the cost difference is arguably understandable.
Which of the two scenarios I put forward do the DVDs you see advertised with that pricing difference or is the a scenario I hadn't considered?
Price for newly released adult DVDs should be $5-$10. If they want to charge $20 up, it should be Blu-ray or Ultra HD BD. You can't be selling $20 DVDs in this HD/4K download era. Not to mention, most of the DVDs being released are either comp, web scenes or re-releases, I found one scene that was on 5 separate DVDs. I purchased a 4hr compilation DVD back in 2006 for a whopping $5.
^^^ About the DVDs being comps: there are some laudable exceptions: Jules Jordan DVDs (they are on the pricier side) never are compilations (except some older Eric Everhard and Mike John stuff). Neither are the Vixen/Tushy/Blacked DVDs. With Zero Tolerance/3rd Degree/Diabolic: All DVDs with more than one disc are compilations. Single disc DVDs aren't (ok, old single discs of 3rd degree were, but these are > 10years old, and usually you could see directly from the number of girls in the volume. if there were 10 or 20 girls, then it is a comp) With Elegant Angel: all these 4hours, 20hours, ... etc. DVDs are compilations. The single disc DVDs are not. With Evil Angel: Those "Red Label" DVDs are compilations, and everything where "From the Archives of ..." is written on the cover are compilations, too. HardX/DarkX...: no compilations, but DVDs from the parent company "XEmpire" are compilations. Brazzers, RealityKings, MOFOS: no compilations in sight. But those companies are Web scene companies foremost, the scenes on DVD are often > 3 years old. DogFart/BlacksOnBlondes: basically everything is a compliation. You'll find probably every single scene of theirs on 4-5 different DVDs... There are the "Dark Side of ..." complations, then you'll find the same scenes under Cuckold Sessions, Glory Hole stuff, White Bitch Sandwich, Zebra Girls, ... you name it.
Many of the other imprints are basically doing comps exclusively. If you have a look at PurePlay Media (http://pureplaymedia.com/intro.cfm), only Private, Naughty America have DVDs with non-comp content, most of the others have only compilations of previously released material. A notable example is "AireRose". That studio was founded in 2014, but apparently has stopped production 3 years ago, and all new DVDs from there are re-shuffling of content released on the previous DVDs.
DVD companies are dead, sad. I've changed my mind, web scenes on DVDs are comps. They weren't shot with a theme for movie release but a theme for the paysite. Only a few remain, I probably could count on one hand.I did check pulse but I am unable to see if those granny or german porn are brand new. Evil angel is releasing 1 scene per day from each movie. If the scenes are being released on internet one by one before the DVD, can you call the DVD brand new? with a $40 price tag and getting the content after everyone else, it seems DVD buyers are getting a raw deal. DVD/VOD should be released same day then single scene 3 months later.
^ I view companies releasing scenes on their own sites similar to the old theatrical concept, especially where so many sites have gone or are headed to streaming-only. They have whatever exclusive window they have on their site (similar to theatrical releases), then you get to other sites' VOD and/or DVD releases. Yes, it is still new. Adult movie companies need to make back money, plus make a profit on their movies or they won't make them anymore. This approach appears to be working for now.
New DVDs still seem to be sold in the $25 range at AdultDVDEmpire and CD Universe; 2 of the largest retailers for physical adult media.
IMO that's too high; unless it's a must own title you would pre-order ASAP wait for a sale which both sites have throughout the year or wait until it drops into the $10 range or lower from a reputable seller at Adult DVD Marketplace.
Same day releases would be nice but I have no major issue with the streaming/VOD release coming out months before the DVD release.
Adult DVDs are basically collector's items at this point. If you really wanted the best quality you would wish for a Blu-ray release or download an HD or UHD copy of the scene(s) you want.
DVD isn't going to give you the best quality for a format intended for standard definition TVs that are no longer made and even the best Blu-ray players upscaling the DVD won't give you true HD quality.
Back when DVDs were king, there were those who would rip the discs and upload the content online illegally. If companies still did day and day release for all formats and platforms they risk losing out on money, so doing digital releases themselves in advance makes sense.
Some fans are passionate enough to double dip on both digital and physical media purchases. Every company wants those types of loyal customers.

Forgive me for the first part of this being slightly off topic
A month ago HotMovies "upgraded" itself but if you pay attention to the layout and read the Make Money links on their website it would appear they got bought by Adult Empire.
If HotMovies was just going to become a Adult DVD Empire VOD clone why even bother spending the money to redesign? Would've been cheaper to just shut down HotMovies or redirect everything to Adult DVD Empire.
Looks like AEBN is basically the only other major alternative now. Sucks for the consumer.
As for DVDs the HotMovies disaster reminded me of another situation with Adult Empire. Elegant Angel DVDs were removed from Adult DVD Marketplace but in hindsight it would appear that Adult DVD Empire didn't want customers buying Elegant Angel titles for significantly less. In case anyone was unaware Adult Empire owns Elegant Angel. They also own West Coast Productions and other studios
My friendly advice is if there's any titles from studios owned by Adult Empire that are for sale cheap at Adult DVD Marketplace, you should prioritize those. Who knows if TPTB will decide they won't want their catalog sold anywhere for less than MSRP...
DVD's are a steal when you compare it to the criminal costs content providers on ManyVids and Clips4Sale charge for just a single scene. They all seem to be making the move to those platforms. It's saving me money.
hotmovies was the only one who showed the full boxcover now they only show front cover or back cover, sad end.they charge 40% so expect high prices from producers to compensate. They should go to Blu-ray, no distributor will charge that much.
