I recently bought a RLD (Mike John) DVD from an online retailer. While it plays fine on my Windows XP computer, it has trouble playing on my Windows 98 computer and on my TV DVD player it locks up 90% of the time when I try to access the extras section.

Can anyone shed any light on compatibility issues regarding these DVDs? (This is the first one I bought by the way). Thanks.

I'm no expert but I have run into some problems like this. I think it has to do with the player itself and the age. I had a few dvd's that played fine on one dvd player then on another they would have spots where the video either skipped, paused, or some pixels when all screwy. I also think it has to do with the dvd and its authoring. For instance I bought Bersek vol. 4 and at a certain point on 4 dvd's of the same volume number it would screw up. I finally exchanged it for one that didn't have the problem. So I hope I shed some light on your question, if not then I'm sure someone with more knowledge will!

I agree with Coyote on this. I have had similar problem DVDs recently but when i tried them in my other DVD player they worked fine. I finally figured out that my Sony player was getting old at about 3 years and got another Sony player, now I haven't had this problem again. So i guess I would ask you how old your stand alone player is? It could be the actual age of the unit or the fact that it was one of the earlier models before they were perfected. Second I would ask if the disc has any scratches or imperfections on it's surface that could interfere with playback.

Oh and I want to add that you might want to clean your lens, that may be a problem too! Best of luck!

I have several DVD Players and I've encounter situations where a DVD would play on one DVD player but not another. I found this in both adult and mainstream DVDs. As an example:
Adult:
Les Vampyres DVD - plays on Toshiba SD2109 but not on any of my other DVD players (Onkyo DR-C500, Apex AD-1500, Sony CX-985V, or DVD-ROM).

Mainstream:
Supergirl DVD - plays on every players except my Sony.

Very frustrating that it wouldn't play on one yet plays fine on another. I also encounter DVDs that would play on all my players, but have some glitches when playing in one or more players but not others. Like it would freeze on certain scenes. And those freezes are not due to layer changes either. Very strange.

Thanks for your replies. Still, there is no way to tell AHEAD of time before you buy a DVD whether or not it will work on your player?
