I've been doing some tape swapping lately, and was wondering, how can I tell if the copy was made from a DVD? Thanks, Justin

Well some dvds have copy protection so you can't copy them. I think all the Metro titles I have have copy protection aka- Macrovision. I'm not really sure if you'd be able to tell if it was copied from a dvd or not.

Most commercial VHS tapes have some sort of label (and, if you're lucky, a factory display box). Yes, those labels are easily counterfeited and some of the studio labels look like amateur night with an inkjet printer, but most bootleggers won't go through the trouble.
Conscious studios have been using distinctive colored VHS cassettes (red, orange, green, yellow, etc.) to tell the genuine article.
Some other ways to tell a dub from the genuine article:
- Almost all VHS tapes have phone sex/website/studio ads at the beginning, while very few DVDs do. So if the tape goes directly into the feature, it may be a bootleg copy.
- The quality of the VHS picture may be uncharacteristically sharp & without the occasional tape glitches found in tape masters.
- There may be a layer change or evidence of other DVD-specific features (such as alternate angle icons or menus).
