Recently Vivid released Jasmine Waltz sextape (ex of David Arquette). The pictures (screen grabs) show the action taking place in a dark setting in a room and barely watchable. Before this, Vivid released the Erica Lynn, Kendra Wilkinson, Karissa Shannon, Shauna Sands, Danielle Staub, Kim Kardashian (maybe more) sextapes with varying degrees of watchability and quality. How much does a company make from a sextape after paying about a couple of hundred thousand dollars to the celebrity?

I don't know, but I'll bet you they're buying publicity, and that the profit margin on that tape itself isn't important. They want you to see and remember that Vivid logo, and the next time you're somewhere that sells videos, you'll see that Vivid logo in the sea of identical boxes and be drawn to it.

I think they are big sellers and therefore big moneymakers.
The popularity of celebrity/gossip outlets such as TMZ, Extra, ET, Access Hollywood, etc,, and the fact that a lot of that gossip rumor bleeds over into the "real" news, is proof that plenty of people are into that stuff and follow it rabidly. The avid celebrity-watcher will buy a "celebrity sex tape", in the name of keeping up with the latest buzz. But they will not buy porn, and they don't regard a celebrity sex tape as porn. Yes, it's usually bad porn, when judged against porn. But, when judged as a novelty video ("OMFG that's Laurence Fishburne's daughter fucking naked!!!") the bar is low or nonexistent.

Honestly, it seems like the only thing Vivid releases now are sex tapes and press releases. The (now cancelled) contract for Waltz paid her $60k and 25% of the profits; if we had her total payment it would be easy to say what Vivid's take was, though I'm willing to assume it was less than people think. Karissa Shannon's boyfriend started driving a Rolls (or Bentley) after theirs came out, and while I assume it was leased, that's probably your ballpark for what the talent currently makes: $60k - $400k. When Pamela and Paris released theirs - before broadband, and when sex tapes were novel - I'd guess that talent payments ended up in the low millions.
I'd guess Vivid's profits mostly come from the fact they don't have any production costs; they just roll that into talent salary. And if they're only paying $60k up front, a tape only needs $80k in profit for them to cover expenses (assuming profit sharing starts before that initial payment's covered; i.e., it's not just an advance). If $80k's a low number, then now you know why Vivid keeps releasing them.
After seeing Kim K. get famous off her terrible, terrible tape, I'd guess that the money's probably an afterthought for many girls in Hollywood. I don't feel that it's a particularly profitable niche, otherwise we'd see more studios releasing more Z-listers.

In almost every case the actual money is a much smaller sum than the reported amount. You exagerated the amount the "celeb" gets and what the company makes in order to get more publicity. So Steve Hirsch would call up his good friend Harvey Levin about some deal he is working on.

Harvey Levin would then have TMZ release a story saying that Vivid, the world's largest porn producer (even though it is not) has offered "celeb-X" (someone who is lucky to be even on the D-list) a $1 million for their sextape (actual amount probably $50k to $100k) but "celeb-X" is going to fight the release in court. Gossip blogs pick up the story, the pot is stirred and the scene gets released. Everyone hopefully makes money but a lot less then they actually claim they are making.
After taxes, lawyers fees, agents commission (probably Kevin Blatt) "celeb-X" nets $30k to $50k. A sum that a regular pornstar might have to do 20+ scenes to make. The real hope though, as mentioned in a previous post, is that "celeb-X" gets a role on The Real Tattooed Pawnstore Shoppers & Closet Designers of Northridge.

That's a little bit like what Hef used to do: publicly offer some actress $1 million to appear in Playboy, because it would make the news. Didn't matter if the actress or celeb was interested, offended, or didn't know what Playboy was. What mattered was that Playboy seemed relevent enough to make the news.

from a retailer POV, pornos with celebrities consistently make the most money in sales and rentals. Pam and Tommy Lee's DVD still moves. Any porno that gets displayed in the mainstream world always sells big.

Well people keep making sex tapes. I just stumbled upon a one man campaign to try and get the newest fired WWE Diva Melina to be hired by Vivid for a superstar line.
