If more girls enter the industry, and supply starts to outstrip demand, then their earnings could drop so much that a regular 9-5 job looks attractive. That could lead to some performers leaving and the whole thing balancing out. |

Seriously, if someone was willing to pay me $100 to pee on them, I would do it. Of course, the trick is, no one would. I'm not a hot girl (or even a girl). In reference to the current influx of women to the sex industry, as well as the influx after the dot-Com crash: "Both booms saw a series of salacious news items about good girls gone bad, a narrative that is at least as old as the Bible -- but I wanted to know what was unique about this particular cultural moment." - This is certainly what many girls are reading now, as even here at ADT the idea has been mentioned several times. The fact is that even in asking whether this will happen, whether more girls will turn to the sex industry in these tough economic times, we (and everyone else, far more so the mainstream press) are actually aiding to create a discourse that somehow makes it a bit more ok - if not a bit more exposed - for women to pursue this path. By no means am I saying that's a bad thing, for the women or for the beneficiaries of their new careers; I'm just saying that these things can often work in circles. Girls pursue jobs in the sex industry - people start talking about it - girls hear about it and start to think about it more - some of those girls pursue jobs in the sex industry - etc. "It took me all of five minutes, and a couple of hesitant keystrokes, to create a Craigslist account, verify my phone number and submit a fake adult ad reading, "Looking for some fun? I'm a 30-year-old professional woman who recently lost her job. Now I'm offering top notch sensual services. E-mail for details." An hour and a half later, the posting was approved and a $10 fee was charged to my credit card. The next time I checked my e-mail, I had 68 enthusiastic inquiries, and a photo of a penis, waiting in my in box." This is the part that I as a man can never really hope to understand. Now I'm not about to say that we men don't enjoy many advantages over the fairer sex in so many areas of life... but this is most certainly one of the areas where women rule supreme. It's true that some men pursue careers in the sex industry, and some in fact are quite successful (look at many of the men on this very board, for example); but to have that kind of response, likely of the majority of whom are serious potential customers, in mere minutes, really speaks to the kind of draw that a woman - almost any woman - represents to so many men. I have more thoughts on the article, and the subject in general, but I'll stop there for now. Any thoughts? |

According to recent polls and studies kids as young as 10 have watched porn in very large numbers. And of course you have the sexting thing. My question is as these kids grow up and become moms, dads and voters will porn be viewed as no big deal acceptably part of society or will they become more conservative. Conservatives have waged a war on our kids for years. A 17 yr old boy tried as an adult sent prison for 10 years for sex with a 15 yr old girl, 14 year girls convicted for distributing cild porn for sending her boy friend a picture of herself on her phone. And they are being put on the sex offenders list. I wonder will there be a back lash or will they accept this when they are running the country. I'm talking about kids and kids not kids and adults. Do what you want with adults. |
| Shagdog Member Houston 626 Posts 1/07 | Then they depended on the new girl in town to keep making money. Then to freak porn. The wave now seems to be IR but that will pass too. Hopefully the next generation pornographers will use thier talent to make porn. |
| killbillvol69 All-Star Member ^Lucy Pinder 18634 Posts 4/08 | She misses the boat when she quotes Margo St. James's "A blow job is better than no job." She sums up the article by saying that things aren't as good for the women as they thought it would be; and while this is often true, perhaps even for the overwhelming majority of women, the point Ms St. James was making is that for many of these women, even if their new career hadn't worked out the way they thought it would, it was still better than any alternatives they felt they had. That's where the blanket judgment fails. As far as women getting into the particular wing of the sex industry that we usually talk about here, pornography, I think that there will certainly be more women trying to get into it this year than last, and likely more the following year than this one. But the economy is just one of the reasons for this, along with porn becoming more mainstream (hello Marilyn Manson dating Stoya, Sasha Grey reaching superstardom, etc.), changing attitudes about sex, the localization of the medium due to the internet, and so many other things. |
| jrv Senior Member 1266 Posts 2/03 | The Face of the Porn Industry is being changed by Internet Piracy & by legit Internet content distribution having a lower cost and risk (since sites may be safely located outside the US). The latter transition is killing porn companies now as they struggle to find a profitable business model (to reduce expenses or increase Internet revenue until there is a profit). A number of familiar names that were real powerhouses 2-3 years ago appear to have essentially given up (Anabolic and RLD are examples) and that has reduced booking opportunities for the girls, as has the flood of imported porn, especially at the "high end" (Cruel Media, etc). |
| RandomPrecision Senior Member Enjoy! 8175 Posts 3/06 | I think if people can find exactly what they want and it's reasonably priced, they'll pay for it. The question is, how do you do that without losing your shirt because of the expenses involved? The most successful people in the business can't afford to pay more than they make for very long. How would a pornographer satisfy a wide range of niches without - A - Going broke Or B - falling victim to having the content seem generic and mediocre? People want quality and variety and they don't want to pay a lot for it. It's a tall order. It's unrealistic. Or is it? |
