Read either in this group or another where Ed
Powers didn't think very much of people commenting
on movies on any internet site. Ed, are we just
supposed to shut up and buy every piece of crap that
is produced and be thankful. I watched most of Ed's stuff
up until the DD 70's editions. I was kind of turned on to
the fact that this was probably the girls first time on camera. Ed is a little or a lot less scary that Mandango.
Obviouly I grew tired of watching him screw as any red blooded heterosexual man should. Instead of having fond
memories of those early films Ed has left a bitter taste in
my mouth. Instead of being remembered as a pioneer in the
Gonzo style of film making he is remembered as a whiny and
pathetic jerk. Power corrupts.

Anybody who produces creavitive material should expect criticism.
As long as the criticism is constructive, then he shouldn't be worried, just act on the criticism and make his movies better.

junglew,

I believe what you are referring to is the director's round table in the latest AVN magazine. Ed didn't have much good to say about many of porn's newer trends, including internet "gossip" sites like rame. Here's a quote from him from that artical:

Although I very much dislike the generalization, I can certainly see his point. In the same artical, Mason said, in response:
I wish places like rame and ADT would be considered more as venues for intelligent conversation about consumer interests and industry interaction than as "gossip" sites. Michael Raven, in the same artical brought up another valid point that may have alot to do with Ed's views:
Patrick Collins has also said in the past (and I'm paraphrasing here) that the consumer can not be counted on to know what s/he wants to see in pornography. A director has to shoot what turns THEM on, not what they think will turn the critics on. This is a very valid point, and especially with regard to the Ed Powers' of the world, where fans of his material are not well represented on forums like ADT or rame, I can certainly understand his reticence to listen to them.

Still though, Michael Raven does admit to getting a lot of useful feedback from emails:

Obviously, I think we as consumers have a lot to offer both Ed Powers, Michael Raven, Mason and everyone else who shoots this stuff. With some of our behavior at times, though, I can see where many industry directors would avoid the internet community like the plague.

Hopefully things are turning around. As skewed as it was, ADT, rame, and CAVR did get some exposure in the latest AVN Online magazine. And as negative as it was, rame got some exposure in this fascinating director's round table artical. Hopefully we as a group can continue to convince people that we have some valid things to say, and that we love this stuff as much as they do, even though, occasionally, a few of our (the internet community's)members don't always put their best foot forward.

In any case, here's a link to the full artical I've been quoting. It does include some very interesting discussions and is worth perusing.

We obviously have to consider the source here, a trade magazine who does not pay attention to the consumer. It was the AVN moderator who grouped rame in with "gossip" sites. Without being too condescending toward AVN, internet savvy people can easily distinguish between a goosip site, a newsgroup, a community, etc. AVN has not made much use of the internet as a communication medium for the adult industry. Rather they use it to garner more ads. Their new site design speaks to that goal. Fine - they're a business. But putting down the valuable information available on the internet because it's not on AVN.com is a disservice to AVN's readers.
We are to people actually familiar with the content of rame and ADT. Read Henri Pachard's articles on YesPortal.com. Look at all the industry people who spend time talking to us. We just have to accept AVN for what it is.

Ed's the one missing out for not listening. The good makers of porn will leave him behind... somewhere in the dust producing dirty debs 20,068

I don't see the comments about RAME as entirely negative. The "old school" of Powers and Hart admit to either not liking it or not reading it; but Pachard is on the record as liking the group. The new school however, is firmly in our camp. Mason says some very flattering things, as does Michael Raven. Jules, while mute in the roundtable, obviously uses ADT, tho his presence in RAME hs been minimal, if at all.

Peter and I discussed it and we were pretty happy with how we came off, especially given AVN's (more specifically, Kernes') stance on us, which has historically been antagonistic. We know we won't teach the old dogs new tricks, as it were, so the elder's responses were expected. The newer folks "get it" and are figuring out ways to use the new communication channels to their advantage. I'm happy that they see RAME as one of those channels.

Personally, I wish factions within RAME didn't take glee in running off industry folks, especially when I read an article like this where it demonstrates people are trying to read us and glean info from us. Rog was busting my chops about how one should compile a list of industry folk who were run out of RAME; I replied it would make me cry and I'd rather not. :-)

P.S. I totally agree with what Steph wrote above...

When I read the article, my thoughts were that it was too bad that the round table took place before Elegant Angel invited MLyons and Speelie out to discuss what they were doing right and wrong with DVD's.

I think that comments made by Mason would have been much more positive (not that they were negative, just somewhat neutral) regarding customer feedback on the Internet.

Although, that probably would have been editted out by AVN.

Well, that's the real strength of the Internet, isn't it? Nobody has to depend on AVN to get their information on porn.

I receive the AVN newsletter, but I hardly read it anymore. I skim a few of the articles at best. The content just doesn't seem to hit the mark from the consumer standpoint.

I come to ADT first where the content is better, and in many cases more lively (lol) and better informed.

Hangin in there Rump.

Maybe you could make some money by selling Ed Powers your glass topped coffee table. He needs a better prop.

That is a fine example of "professional" journalistic work as defined by AVN. Instead of finding out how things work, they will "define" reality in such a way that suits their interests. It is so much better for them to calls us all nothing but a bunch of voyeuristic gossipers, than to deal with us as a potential competing source of information.

I basically have two observations I would like to make corncerning the above:

1) I came to RAME and ADT rather late, but I never ever thought of these forums as gossip forums and I never ever have used them as such. I "use" both forums as great places where all matter of things that interest me can be discussed FREELY. Of course, I don't agree with everything that is said and there are many times when I sit behind my computer shaking my head, sometimes in disbelief, sometimes in shock or anger. I guess that is a price that has to be paid for the immense benefits that come with this sort of free exchange of ideas. To put it short, I have learned more by reading RAME and ADT in these short couple of months than I have learned in the 8 years that I have been reading AVN.

2) I am willing to go on the record by calling AVN hypocrites. First, I don't belief that the amount of gossip on both ADT and RAME is very high. Second, I strongly believe that AVN themselves provide at least as much gossip than either RAME or ADT. Weren't they the first home of Gene Ross and is Todd Hunter still doing his thing, as the successor of Ross (I really don't have a clue since I haven't visited the AVN site in a long time)? And what about their "bone yard" section. O, but wait, of course, that is not gossip, but "professional, responsible, ethical journalistic work". How could Mark Kernes write that editorial a couple of years ago about the detrimental effects of all the gossip sites without feeling embarrased by the fact that his own publication was more than willing to jump on that band wagon? You don't suppose he was only trying to defend the interests of his own publication, do you?

As you can tell by this post and some other posts in other threads I made recently, I am in a very foul mood the last couple of days. It is just that I am getting tired of all the bull shit. If you think RAME or ADT or even AVN is bad, you should read "Hot Magazine". Those guys are truly unbelievable. They REALLY think that they are the masters and the high authority of the porn world and they have no problems whatsoever to insult the buying public if it buys the kind of products they don't like. What do you expect from guys that claim at every opportunity they can create, that they are "le magazine officiel du X-business" and the one and only true defenders of "le vrai cinéma pornographique".

(Easy Walter, easy. Think happy thoughts, nothing but happy thoughts... ah, hmmm, time to select the Babes of the Week. If that doesn't mellow me out, nothing will.)
