I spent 20+ minutes searching on this subject before posting, but I didn't find much. What I'm wondering is why some companies edit their trailers to show no penetration or "overt" sexual acts and then say it is because of 2257.
The only thing I could find was Mike Quazar saying "as I've explained here before..." I even searched for Mike's posts specifically, going back two years, but again couldn't find anything.
Brandon Iron said in one post that he would be required to have 2257 information on everyone in a trailer, but that makes no sense, because if they are in the trailer they are in the movie right? ...and you've got ID and model releases from everyone that you shoot, in every scene right?
Anyway, I'm confused because a trailer is just a by product of the real product: The hardcore scenes, which themselves must be 2257 compliant.
I'm interested both as a consumer (because I like trailers and they help me shop) and from a legal standpoint, as I've been discussing these issues with people that are involved in adult content on the web.
Thanks,
Dr. P

steph posting as drew...
trailers get posted all over the web. 2257 requires recording every url where they would appear = impossible. technically if boxcovers of a movie that show sex acts are posted all over the web producers should have referenced all those URLs.
2257 is far more convoluted than simply having model releases and IDs.

I wasn't claiming to be an expert or anything. I was merely repeating what has been told to me several times. Even third-party image hosting sites make sure you give information as to how 2257 information can be tracked.
I contacted avn.com about submitting trailers for their site and they have rules about content and model releases.

Another reason softcore trailers exist: trailers aren't "free porn". They're designed to give you a feel for what a movie looks like to help you decide if you want to buy it.
I scratch my head when I see 2 - 3 minute trailers full of sex acts posted by studios on free video sharing sites.

Another part of the reason that people don't pay for porn anymore.

Yeah, and how can a "softcore" trailer give you a feel for what is supposed to be hardcore movie? Yeah okay, so I know what girls are in the movie -- I can get that from the boxcover or promotional materials.
Consumers need to see just a few moments (even if they are quick cuts) of the actual sex acts involved so they will know if its up their alley. Porn fans are very picky about camera angles, what positions, what kind of guy the girl is paried with.
You can't get that stuff from softcore trailers you see on the Zero Tolerance site, for instance.
I agree that showing too much and giving you a glimpse of every cumshot, etc.. might be too much. But you've got to tease us with SOMETHING ... even if its in a wild "Michael Bay" style of cuts -- at least let the consumer see what is going on in the hardcore side.

From my perspective I've always thought fans watched trailers to see what the girls generally looked like in the movie. i.e. Make-up, hair, what stage of body modification they are at (tattoos, tits, meeth), etc.
I didn't realize that the majority of fans needed to know what position, camera angle and size/shape/girth of both cocks rubbing together in Starlett Hohanssen's ass in order to make an informed purchasing decision. I'm such a square.

I just get a blank page there. What is it about?
(Oh, and we don't use DRM, because there is no unbreakable DRM in existance and it just annnoys the honest customers)

^ It appears that RealPlayer has added download manager functionality to the beta version of their next video player.

Most serious computer users don't even bother with RealPlayer.

This is a brand new Real Player and it will download ANY VIDEO FORMAT, not just Real Player. It inserts a Download button over any video in any web page. If you like a video on YouTube you can download it with new new Real Player and save it to your computer instead of streaming it from YouTube. If you go to a porn site that doesn't use DRM you can download and save all of the movies on the website. If you use the paid version of Real Player you can also burn your own DVDs with this content.
This is serious shit for porn companies that have licensed their content to websites that use no DRM. This new Real Player makes theft convenient for everyone, not just those folks using Torrent sites. I'm really surprised there's been no industry buzz about this.

Brandon,
You also made that clear (that you were just saying what you had heard) in the previous post. I really should have included that in my original post. Sorry for the (possibly) negative impliciation.
Drew/Mike:
I TOTALLY agree with Tritone. I'm a consumer and I want to see what I am getting before I get it. I have thousands of dollars in porn DVDs, which makes me want to be a smidge more careful with future purchases. Real hardcore porn trailers are an incredible sales tool if you asked me. As for "people don't pay for porn", I guess that may be increasingly true, but do you really think there's someone out there who's sole source of porn is trailers? I suppose that's a "maybe", but I think the numbers are probably so low that you are alienating FAR more customers by not having them, as opposed to depriving a TINY number of people who would otherwise only watch the trailer.

Regarding Real Player and streaming video: I see this as a real non-issue. It's been possible to do this for years. Plus, does anyone really think it's a valid business model to only stream content to consumers? If producers *and* consumers like it, I guess that's all well and good.
This consumer thinks it's crap and won't join any sites that only have streaming video, nor will he pay for any "video downloads" that only stream and can not be saved for later viewing. Doctor P0rn0 often speaks of himself in the third person. :)
Seriously, I guess it's because I am used to physical media when I buy entertainment, whether it be music, movies, video games, etc. If I spend money on it, I expect full (personal) use of it thereafter. I do not think am alone in this expectation.
I'm super off topic, so I will end it here.

That's the thing with this new Real Player. It will save DVD quality streaming media o you hard drive and burn it to DVD for you to play in your home entertainment system. This is different. The mechanisms for doing this may have been in existence for a while but the average consumer didn't know abou them. This new Real Player embeds a "download this" button over any streaming video on a web page. Any idiot can now save movies to their system.
One of the biggest complaints I often hear about sites like YouTube is that you can't download the video clips. There may be ways to to this but at least 98% of the people using YouTube have no idea how to go about saving a video stream. The new Real Player makes this a non-issue for EVERYONE not just tech-savvy torrent-user file-sharing types. Any streaming video without DRM can be saved to your hard drive with the click of a button. Pay for the full version of Real Player and you can burn it to DVD.
