Got my BR and watched the soft-core version and it stands up well with only the edit in the Manuel scene sticking out. The score for this is excellent and the cinematography during the boardwalk/carnival sequence is terrific. It was nice to have the BTS and outtakes as well.
I saw this. Haven't shared my opinion because I'm not sure exactly how to articulate it. Enjoyed the beginning a lot. I had that moment of "Jesus, this could be it! Best modern porn feature ever!", but I started tuning out around the Euro guys scene. It's so difficult to keep momentum going and still have those long sex scenes. I don't want to say I didn't like it or felt unmoved by it because it's above and beyond anything being made today. I just hope Graham will keep directing features.
I've only seen the trailer, since I'm not into rough sex, gang bangs etc.. But I am keen on Elegant Angel producing more features. Something more WilliamH than Mason perhaps next time.

Definitely a challenge for modern features to deliver the gonzo sex and still be a proper feature without becoming 3 hour epics. You might want to try out the softcore edit.
I don't get why sex scenes EVER need to run longer than 5 or 6 min. I think we'd all be better off with shorter sex scenes in the feature cut. The ungodly long versions can always be thrown in as extra features.
Thank goodness at least one other person feels this way! And it isn't just because of disrupting the narrative flow. There doesn't exist a 20-minute sex scene that I can make it through without fast forwarding -- to last that long requires seemingly endless passages of the same thing; one can suggest everthing going on in a scene without settling in for an extended visit.
^I feel that way too. I'm not into long sex scenes in general. but they definitely don't belong in a feature. I get it after five minutes. And more importantly there's the disruption of the narrative flow. Sex scenes in a feature are supposed to help the narrative, and it only takes five minutes to do that. Also, features should have a theatrical-length running time.
I just saw this movie, and it's a deep film. Elle (Jessie Andrews's character) is a woman who feels alone and unwanted, and undeserving of love and happiness. This is because of an event in her past back home. She then met a good man but ruined that. I think Elle became a call girl because she knew she would be treated roughly be her clients and felt she deserved it, and would get paid really well for it. But it's also part of the journey which she is taking. Much of Elle's unhappiness is shown through her facial expressions, which is captured really well. She would be on the road to self-discovery, and while she didn't know where that road would lead her, it really didn't matter. Like she said, it was one day at a time. It's something she had to find out. Talk about a movie that shows the potential that porn can have. Anyone who doesn't think that a porno movie could have a really good plot needs to see this. I think it will change people's minds. No corny "plot" as a filler for the sex scenes here. "Portrait Of A Call Girl" is really an indie drama that happens to have hardcore sex scenes. Also, Jessie Andrews has major acting talent. And if you're looking to get turned on, you're definitely watching the wrong movie.
I finally had a chance to watch Portrait of a Call Girl. Loved the visual style, the focus on Jessie Andrew's call girl character (are you reading this Wicked?) but I fall in the same camp as Savoy, John and Alpha on this one. The fascinating first third gave way to those longer sex scenes, which, as John mentioned, could have easily been shortened on disc 1 and included in their gonzo entirety on disc 2. I haven't watched the 75 or 80 minute minus-the-hard-core cut. However, if the call girl's roaming about and self reflection moments were edited from that version, the DVD would likely be about 35 minutes long. Still, the DVD deserves a heap of praise and I hope that EA gives another porn starlet a shot at an upcoming installment in what I hope is a series of "portrait" DVDs---tb
The plot and character development. There's nothing porny about the movie other than having hardcore sex scenes, and they're part of the plot. The thing I like about Jessie Andrews is her acting abilities.
That is what makes an awesome adult feature to me. You don't think of it as porn. You can call it an adult film with a straight face and gain far more from viewing it then a tickle in your pants.
