Oh, jeez, lessee... I've directed under Eli Cross, Robert April & Gus Delario. I've been miscredited as Eli Cash and Bryn Pryor (thanks Jeff Lam for putting my real name on all those Vivid boxes...) I ran AVN under Mark Logan. And then I have different nommes de plume I use for other purposes.

Wow, that was depressing. I looked at the list Steph posted... I've made a lot of really crappy movies over the past few years. Not all of them, certainly, but geez... I gotta go cut my wrists just a little...
omg that was the banner year for commmercials huh!!!??? That is on my top 5 favorites ever but i meant it in the playful don't take the stage names too serious, it isn't always the performer/directors choice, plus he fights crime and plays pro football kinda way
I love Eli Cross. I'd take a director who puts out a few awesome movies over someone who spews an elephant buttload of crap any day. My copy of Upload should be here any day!
i like working for him, because when he directs you get a different feel than most of the scenes i do. he almost seems to be directing a mainstream movie more so than a porn scene. i dont know if that makes sense, but its fun for me. you feel like the little things you do BESIDES the fucking are important somehow to the movie. :)
You were Mr AVN? Then you can answer me an important question. What is AVN's legitimization to confer the "porn-oscars"? As far as I understand AVN isn't the Academy of Porn Picture Arts and Sciences?

I love animals so I went to work at the pet store up the street, I left. For legal reasons I can't tell you why, but between you and I just know that in my heart I love animals and when I left I felt better about myself, anyways that's not the point. Come to find out they have been slaughtering puppies up as offerings to satan in hopes of the Atlanta Falcons having a great season. In light of this information I think the best thing to do is to address any concerns about puppies and how the pet store handles them to me. Because I worked there. Before. And got on so well that now I don't. :)

You're absolutely right, Sam. Not only have I never seen a porn movie in my life (especially not the ones I've directed and edited, 'cuz no one would want to watch those), I actually can't even say the word "porn" out loud because I live in my sainted mother's basement, and would never say such a filthy thing, or entertain such horrible thoughts, under her roof.If I understand the question, AVN's "legitimization" is exactly the same as the MPAA. They started doing it because no one else was, and became the "Porn Oscars" in the process. When AVN began giving out awards 25 years ago, the X-Rated Critics' Association -- not to be confused with XRCO -- had fallen apart after two awards shows and one private awards "ceremony." No one else was holding awards at all, so AVN stepped in. Luckily, as established above, I escaped my five years there without ever seeing one movie. A few of the editors watched a couple and were horribly scarred, emotionally. As a rule, we discouraged it. But lemme tell ya, editing porn without actually looking at it is a lot tougher than you might think.

juha, I don't understand what you're getting at (nor what imak is getting at, but that's another post). It's just a stupid magazine handing out some stupid awards. It's not like they're claiming to be the Nobel committee or something.

Yeah, the truth is painful. Unlike the Oscars, these are not fans voting, but salesmen, making a buck off the lonely sad-sack.

Uh, Sam, not to burst your bubble, but the fans don't vote for the Oscars. Only members of the AMPAS vote for the Oscars. You're thinking of the People's Choice Awards which are, um, slightly different. And no salespeople vote in the AVNs, either. I think maybe you should stick to hyperbole, dude, cuz facts just ain't your strong suit. And juha, as someone who works the mainstream side of the fence as well as the adult side, I can tell you that mainstream's view of the Oscars is much like porn's view of the AVN awards... everyone in Hollywood thinks the Academy Awards are a crock of shit, but we get all worked up about them anyway. As for the AVN voting pool, it's much smaller than you would want it to be. Maybe 100 people (although I'm not sure). In an effort to try to open things up, one year when I was still running the mag, we let people working in the industry vote in much the same way the Academy works (Performers voted in acting categories, directors voted for Best Director and Best Video & Film, etc.) but it was a disaster. It was such a blatant popularity contest we never did it again. Most people believe AVN's awards are bought and sold, and I've given up trying to convince people otherwise because it just gets tedious. Before I took the job running that magazine, I was one of the loudest voices in the industry proclaiming that it was all rigged. And I swore that if I got in and discovered it was, I was going to shout it from the mountaintops. Well, much to the dismay of folks like Sam, it ain't. If it were determined by advertising or some bizarre system of payoffs (even Gene Ross, who has nothing but animosity for AVN, admits he never got any of these mythical trades or bribes, and I certainly never did -- dammit!), Corruption would never have won seven major awards because the most advertising SexZ has ever taken is four pages. But we did win. And we won at XRCO and Adam Film World and Nightmoves. But it's hard for people in this industry -- who rarely watch their own product, much less anyone else's -- to admit that someone else might, just might, have made a movie people like better than theirs. It's much easier to believe the fix is in. And it's more fun for people, too. So AVN just accepts it and goes on. We never asked anyone to count the awards as anything other than the magazine trying to reward some people we felt did exceptional work. It isn't legislation, it isn't a statement of fact, it isn't a royal decree. It's just a statue from AVN, and no one anywhere was ever forced to participate in those awards. FWIW

Some of the sex was too rough for my personal taste. But Corruption was undoubtedly a major achievement in porn feature making. It deserved all the Awards it won.
I sort of thought that the idea of treating AVN awards as porn-oscars came not from AVN but from the big studios, the ones that try to cater not just to the hardcore fans but to the once-in-a-while porn consumers as well. In order to sell your product to the latter you need something that makes it stick out in a way that looks trustworthy, and saying that it has earned x number of AVN awards is a good way of doing just that. Mainstream movies are often marketed by quotes from reviews and you see some of that in adult as well, but the once-in-a-while consumer is probably not going to be all that impressed by the fact that Dilbert27 thought some porn flick was fantastic.
