Spammers send these sort of e-mails hoping people like you will have automatic image loading turned on. It tells them, "yes, the e-mail address you have on file is accurate; please spam me." That's why Microsoft buries the option in the new software in a bunch of menus. Basically, it's the Internet equivalent of putting a sign on your back that says, "Kick me." You might look to see if Outlook Express offers site by site whitelisting (basically putting certain sites into the "safe" category).
