Hi Oly:
I think the best way to get over an ex is to spend more time with your female friends. Hopefully you have a good friend who can just be with you so you're not reminded of the loss.

Whatever you do, don't listen to the radio or get drunk. You will only get depressed. The radio, unfortunately, is going to be blaring something about how happy somone else is with their girl, or how much they miss her. Neither one is a good thing right now.
My advice is distraction. Go out with your friends, have fun, laugh. Don't bury yourself in work, bury yourself in friendship.

Welcome to ADVD Oly
Sorry you're missen your ex
This sounds really corney, but I had an ex once that regardless of how bad she was for me I still missed her a lot. So I made a list of all the reasons I was better off without her, what I didn't like about her, etc. Even made a few up just for good measure, lol.
I read it every day and eventually was very concsious of the reasons we were not together and became O.K with it.
Maybe that will help you, if nothing else you should get a giggle at my expense eh?

Hey - I've got one for you...
How do you get over your ex if she's screwing the guy who sits in front of you AND the guy who sits behind you at work?
Easy, time, lots and lots of time. And then, more time. Having good friends helps a lot, having someone to talk to is invaluable. I found that getting rid of (boxing up and putting away if you can't face tossing) things that remind you of this person helps - the old out of sight, out of mind thing. Music is a killer, especially if it was an important part of your life together.
Alcohol is your enemy. Going out and getting someone new is also your enemy, you'll only end up hurting them and probably yourself.
Take comfort in your friends, they'll help you through this.
PS - Yes - the above is true, no I'm not over her yet, but I'm getting better...

Wow, Pablo... that's tough man! Talk about having it rubbed in your face!!!
I agree with all the advice here. Go out with friends that you care about, not your bar buddies. They won't understand or care. Take up a new hobby. Something you've never done before to create new memories that won't include her. Enjoy your new found freedeom! Do something that you've always wanted to do, but couldn't because of her. It's very freeing.
Lunacy - I like your idea. Writing down the reasons why she is bad for you would help you remember when you're feeling weak. It may not ease away the pain, but it would help you from trying to get back together.

Pablo - you find a new job Just kidding - that really sucks. I think if you call her a slut (with a beavis and butthead intonation) in your own mind you'll feel better
Lun - I've done the writing down the reasons - that sure adds some controlled rationality to something that is 90% uncontrollable emotion.

Time out with friends always seemed to work best. I'd also bury myself in projects around the house that I never seemed to get to. The dead time is always when you seem to miss somebody the most, so keep busy as much as you can.

hmm, sucky situation that i think everyone can relate to and has been there at least once in there life. whenever i was feeling lonely, i would go out and meet new people. it is always fun to get to know newbies and such. plus, picking up guys or being hit on is a great self confidence booster. no, i am not talking aobut jumping into another relationship (just say no to rebound!) but knowing that you are still desireable is a great pick-me-upper! that, and hanging out in the adt chat room at night!!! ha ha ha!

Hey Steph, I've been looking for a new job.
Get this - I actually hired the two guys! Talk about screwed up. Ah well, I'm better off - but it sure is a crappy way to end an eight year relationship.
I like the take up something new idea - I took up commuting by bike - I found the morning and evening rides really helped clear my head. Another thing that helped was moving to a new place with no memories of her.

Pablo - 8 years??? Not to be too nosey, but what happened? It sounds like she did this because she was mad... or completely evil! I can't imagine ending an 8 year relationship by hurting the other person so bad.
I'm glad to hear that you're doing healthy things like commuting by bike to clear your head. When I was going through something very similar, I decided to start working out and build some muscles (I wish I would have kept that up... damn). Plus, to hang out with some friends that I neglected for years.

She had a past with many men in it, I foolishly thought I was different. Seems I was only different in that I lasted a bit more than her usual couple of weeks/months. I sensed something was up about 4 months before it ended & confronted her, seems she had picked up a "friend." Things just got worse from there. I couldn't take it so I bailed
She actually said she never wanted anyone to love her as much as I had - seems she has this thing for guys that treat her like crap - so... that's what I left her with.

OUCH!!! where in the hell were these women raised and by who?? SATAN?? i am sooo incredibly sorry that all y'all met such pitiful excuses for my gender. have faith boys, there ARE decent women out there! pablo, i think your woman has some serious issues--perhaps needing male attention to replace love never received from a male figure (father), low self esteem, or even sexual abuse. i know it is hard not to hate her, but chances are she is going thru her own misunderstood hell. not that that gives her any reason to dick you over. just smile smugly and realize that you got outta there i the nick of time. rip, wow, i hope that your women=bad mottos is slowly changing. hopefully you will meet a women out there who treats you how you deserve. i feel that there is a true match for everyone out there, but it is sometimes hard to see them or realize that the person you are with is not the true one. hang in there all you singles! there is light at the end of the tunnel. i used to be totally uptight about relationships not working out and thought that i would be single forever. i am now totally comfortable with not having any commitments. before you can be happy with someone, you have to be comfortable with yourself. now, that doesn't mean that i have stopped looking or hanging out with men (men are great!!!!)!!! just relax and have fun with the opposite sex! okay, biggun removes herself from her soapbox...

Evil - sounds very similar, a couple of times over the eight years, we had split for a couple of months, but she would always end up with some little crisis and I would foolishly let her back in. Something about her just gets to me, kinda melted my resolve a few times. Finally I got tired of being used.
Biggun - I know she is screwed up and has very low self esteem, I tried everything I could to help her, even offered to help pay for counseling if she would just go. She once said that the only time she felt truly loved and beautiful was when she was with me. OK, so why did she treat me like poo-poo all the time? (rhetorical question)
I know there are good women out there, I've known several, the love of my life was one of them (no, the above woman is NOT the love of my life).
I'm 40 now and content to be on my own for a while. My daughter and friends are all I need at the moment. That, and a little porn :-)

So I have a little more to add.
I think that some time on your own is a really heathy thing guys.
When I finally wised up and left an abusive relationship after 3 years, I was single for quite a while. I chose to be celibate for a year and then when I did start seeing people again it was very casual.
I learned a lot about myself in that time, and did a lot of healing.
When I did meet someone I wanted to be with I was sure enough of myself, and knew my own heart well enough to stand firm in what I needed and wanted from a partner.
So maybe the cliche is true, time does heal.
In the interim, lean on your friends, and be patient with yourself.

Morrigan puttin' in her one cent's worth:
The best thing I can say about it is just hang out with your friends, get a new hobby, and all of the other wonderful advice above. It's gonna hurt, no matter what, but you can't dwell too much on it.
If you can stand disco, get a copy of "I will survive" and blast it full volume for a couple of days. LOL
-M
PS-IF you remain friends with her, don't let that interfere with any new relationships you develop. Trust me on this one. Been there, hated it.
'Nuff said.

Or you could try "Love Stinks" by The J.Geils Band.
Then again, Adam Sandler sang it in The Wedding Singer and was attacked by the bride's father.
