A trio of famous ones: Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky (composer) - forced to commit suicide by friends scandalized by his affairs (the cleansed version has him straight and his death by cholera as a result of drinking unfiltered water - yeah, right), Michelangelo Buonarroti (artist, sculptor) - married with children all the while having tempestuous affairs with many of his young male models and with Pope Julius (who had his choir & alter boys on the side as well - you can probably count on two hands the popes who have been "straight").

Alan Turing. Computer pioneer and one of the great heroes of the second world war.

Turing's work on breaking military codes saved thousands of lives and was one of the main contributing factors in the defeat of Nazi Germany. One of the earliest electronic computers was designed and constructed by him for this work.

After the war he was persecuted by homophobes who hounded him through the courts until he eventually committed suicide.

There's some reasonable speculation that Abraham Lincoln had some male-male experiences. There are many, many others who apparently had male-male as well, but I don't know if they should be classified as gay or bi.

There is considerable research literature to the effect that nearly 50% of all men have had at least some male-to-male contact to the point of orgasm (if nothing more than mutual j/o) at some time in their lives (usually the early teens through early college age). (I'm not talking about rape or coercion here.) I do not think that this reflects on their sexuality at all. It is just a matter of opportunity and raging hormones in a particular situation at a particular time mixed with some degree of curiosity.

I think attempting to define someone else's sexuality is fairly pointless. I think that ones sexuality is defined by who one freely chooses as a relationship partner -- not by any one, or even, several sexual situations in which one might have been involved.

By all accounts, Alexander the Great had a male lover whom he cherish above and beyond all other relationships. He also had a wife. (Several if I remember correctly - or were they concubines? Same difference.) But it was his male lover whose death drove Alexander into deep despair. It was his male lover who Alexander decreed a god for all his kingdom to worship in honor of the man's death. I think that, in spite of wives and children, we can safely assume Alexander the Great to have been gay.

Lincoln may (or may not) have had some male-to-male sex at some point in his life. Regardless, I seriously doubt that he was gay as I define it above nor do I think he would even qualify as bisexual.

James Buchanan, on the other hand, was very likely at least bisexual and more probably gay -- but we'll never know for sure.

Oh, and as a matter of record, possibly the single most important person in the entire American Revolutionary War was Prussian Baron Friedrich von Steuben, who whipped a rag-tag collection of men into the disciplined army who eventually won the war. Without him, it is very likely that American Revolution would have been lost. And he was queer as a three dollar bill.

The wives and children of Alexander were just a part of his government policy in order to mix people (Macedonians and Persians) and therefore to rule easier. There are also some examples of his homosexuality such as his behavior in a sports contest where he kissed the winner in the lips and the fact that many of his "prime ministers" have been sending the most beautiful boys in his hug.
In general terms homosexuality in ancient Greece was a very normal thing and i wonder why things have changed since then....

Maybe Christianity had something to do with turning the Greeks against the gays. It's interesting, though, that Greece's golden era was in a time of relaxed attitudes to homosexuality.

Christianity has a lot of good things going for it; however, it also does its very best to foster bigotry and hate. I can't imagine that Jesus would have condoned many of the things done in His name.
