I always like seeing these types of topics pop up. Admittedly, they are 100% subjective because how can any of our preferences be wrong? What I like about them is reading what other people like. In more than a few of these threads, I've been introduced to new sites, studios, and models. When it comes to listing a favourite era, obviously age is going to have a big factor as well.
My personal Golden Age of porn starts somewhere around the early- to mid-1990s and lasts for most of the first decade of the 2000s. Some may quibble and say that's too broad a span be a specific era, but I'll do my best to justify my choice.
I remember when VHS movies became a thing. My community prohibited adult shops initially, so we were a bit late to the game, but the first one opened around 1984. Back then, most movies were still plot based and a horny 18-year-old didn't want or need long stretches of dialogue and acting to get to the sex. I suspect a big factor was that adult movies no longer needed to pretend to be more than what they were since people could sit in the privacy comfort of their own living room with their new-fangled VCR watching what they wanted to. I'm convinced this gave rise to what we recognize as everyday porn now. Scenes could have a thin plot such as a pizza delivery or a casting call, or they could be purely gonzo and just dive in. Whichever it was, the sex scenes weren't simply tacked on like they were in the 1970s. The sex scenes were the main event.
This is the biggest reason why my favourite era begins in the 1990s. It marks that shift fully away from plot-based movies and focused on the sex. (I should also add that a big part of what makes this my favourite era is that anal sex scenes became more mainstream and vastly more plentiful.)
Some of the studios from that era remain among my favourites. Some of these are now gone but some also successfully migrated online. This is in no way a complete list and it isn't in any order, but these are some studios whose movies from that era I still regularly watch: Anabolic, Diabolic, 3rd Degree, Digital Playground, Elegant Angel, Extreme Associates, Hustler, JM Productions, Jules Jordan, Red Light District, Wicked, and Zero Tolerance.
This is also subjective, but many of the studios I've listed above were known for producing harder-edged stuff. That was also a revelation born out of the VHS revolution as well. Studios like Anabolic, Diabolic, Evil Angel, Extreme Associates, and JM Productions all had some amazing stuff. Whether you like what they offered or not, it's still set the stage for where we are today.
I'd also include a controversial character in here as well as he is also an important part of this era. It's Max Hardcore. In his earlier years, in the early to mid-1990s, Max hadn't turned into the misogynistic jackass that he became in the later years in his career. I found most of his earlier movies to be incendiary. (As an aside, I use a simple indicator to determine if any scene by Max Hardcore is pre-or post-misogyny. It's the simple act of him going down on his partner. He did that regularly and his older movies but as he moved into more BDSM and humiliation, he dropped that. His movies stopped being about his partner's pleasure as well and solely about his own.)
Because this era also covers the major shift to online porn, several pioneering studios stick out in my mind as well. These include Brazzers, Bang Bros, Naughty America, Score Group, Kink.com, Mofos, New Sensations, and Reality Kings.
Thinking about the stars of that era is also highly subjective. My tastes in models hasn't changed over the years. I prefer models at the younger end of the scale (18 - 22) and relatively petite. This era introduced me to many models whose scenes I continue to watch today, usually in scenes produced by the studios listed above. These include Gauge, Aurora Snow, Taylor Rain, Jenna Haze, Teagan Presley, Sasha Grey, Bobbi Starr, Dana DeArmond, Amber Rayne, and Jasmine Lynn.
Other models who may not have hit the big time as hard as some of the above but who were certainly on my list of favourites include Tammi Ann, Sabrina Johnson, Brittany Skye, Hannah Harper, Alana Evans, Stephanie Swift, Crystal Ray, and Sunrise Adams.

I'm a film buff too and obviously have more access to discuss cinema and its history (different periods, myths within the industry etc.) with people than pornography, so decided to start the investigation here.

^ I didn't pick up on you being a new member here, so welcome! ADT ebbs and flows a bit and things seem to be a bit slow these days, but it will pick up. I'm always amazed at the depth of knowledge that many member have of porn and the stars in it. I tend to be a bit of a walking history book of porn, but only because I've been an active collector for over 45 years. ADT is also a great mix of younger and older members with different experiences. I wouldn't expect a 20-year-old just getting into collecting porn to understand what life was like when the only porn available was in print, and it wasn't very good at that.
For all the flaws of the business these days (OF, MF, piracy, etc.) the internet has been a revolution and not mere evolution.
^ Doubt this site will be revitalized. It's popularity is tied to studio porn. Maybe others can see a rebirth in studio porn, I don't.
As for the subject of this thread, it's come up here before. I'll site the mid 80s as an excellent period with the VCR becoming commonplace & California displacing NYC as the center of porn production. Ultimately, I'll go with roughly 2008 to 2013 era. It includes the careers of both Tori Black & Malena Morgan. That's the best porn I can recall.

I think my favorite period is 2010's. I started watching porn in early 2000's, and have never really gone into what there was before that. After joining various porn sites the years before, in 2014 I finally joined Brazzers for the first time, and they produced some great porn back then. Some of my favorite stars started their careers around that time; Peta Jensen, Keisha Grey, Ashley Adams, Dillion Harper... I had Brazzers subscription for 4 or 5 years until I realized it wasn't worth my money anymore. Fortunately there were and still are alternatives.
Also, from technical standpoint, by 2010's videos were at least HD quality, and soon 4K.
Not that things would be bad now somehow. There is still great porn around.

I thoroughly enjoyed the rise and dominance of GFF & SHV, the controversial Bangbus episodes where girls literally got ditched. That was probably my favorite time period overall BUT I can't bring myself to hate the current stuff because PureTaboo, MissaX/AllHerLuv are still putting out great stuff and SHV has put out some awesome features. One thing I also appreciated about 2000-2015 or so is that more people wanted to become pornstars, not just adult performers with a few hundred scenes under their belts in 2-5 years. There was a drive to make this a career rather than just an outlet for raging hormones.

Early 2000's was pretty good due to the DVD boom so studios like Red Light District and Anabolic were cranking out pretty good gonzo titles with lots of young, attractive ladies.
