Hello...
I've "listened" for a while and love the forum...now I have a request...

Please help me compile a list of female directors.

My tastes or requisites, I believe, are very similar to dumblonde's as far as adult film and I have this crazy notion that a movie directed by a woman will somehow be more appealing. I am only familiar with Candida Royalle and i am not impressed. I own One Size Fits All and it is amateurish if not insulting. Production value aside, the story is silly (not comedic as intended) and Tom Byron (i think) is obviously not in the biz for his acting skills.

Anyways, I plan to try more female directed films as an experiment and need help in my search. I've heard mention of:

Veronica Hart
Tina Tyler
Shane
Tianna (Buttwoman?)
Mason
Chloe
Juli Ashton

I'm not familiar with any and I'm not even sure if they actually direct or if they're just promoted as such to increase sales. Along those lines, is someone like Shane a performer, camerperson, or director (or anything...is it just "shane approved" whatever that means) in her "gonzo" stuff?

In your response, any opinions you have about the directors and their body of work would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help.

Off the top of my head:

Candida Royale

Tiffany Mynx (Cheek To Cheek 1, 2, 3, Asswoman In Wonderland, Tiffany Mynx's Private Movies 1, 2, Toe Story)

Annabel Chong (Office Cruelty, Pornomancer)

Tanya Hyde (although I've been aware of some discussion as to whether or not this person is actually a woman)

Veronica Hart is a technically accomplished director of story based romantic type porn that appeals to women. Lately she has made a number of movies with porn legends Ginger Lynn and Marilyn Chambers all worth seeing. The cast tends to be on the older side as Veronica was once a performer and hasn't forgotten her friends. Sunset Stripped is a current Ginger release.

Mason is diametrically opposite. She does all sex movies with the emphasis on rough sex from what is normally thought of as the male point of view and not for the feint of heart.

Chloe is a performer who has directed a number of movies I am not acquainted with. I don't believe Shane, Tianna or Julie Ashton would be considered directors in the traditioal sense, but I think Tina Tyler has directed movies. Others may be able to help you with those.

Don't forget Toni English. And Buffy Malibu?

In Europe, female directors are also coming along nicely. There are/were Anita Rinaldi, Ovidie, Carolyn Monroe (an American star from the early 90s who has made pictures in Italy), Rita Cardinale (who is directing for XY Pictures in Germany), Laetitia (the Queen of the French pro-am scene during the 90s), Sabrina Ricci, Nicky Ranieri (the wife of Mario Salieri), Brigitte Lahaie, Sarah Young, ... Hell, even Clara Morgane has directed her first movie.

Our titles aren't on DVD yet, but my co-director Alpha with Passionfruit Productions is also an accomplished female director.

Incidentally, for what it's worth, I suspect that Cameron Rose of For Women Only 1 is a female pseudonym for Robert Herrera. Robert is interviewed in the behind-the-scenes featurette for that movie, and a line of text at the bottom of the screen credits him as "producer/director." I watched the featurette three times and couldn't spot (or hear) a single woman among the video crew. In fact, Robert is very clearly shown giving direction (explaining the scenes to the performers, discussing the script with the crew, watching the monitors, etc.). Cameron was not the writer, either; I know for a fact that Simon Wolf was the writer, because he personally told me so.

In retrospect, I maybe should've docked a half-point off my rating of For Women Only 1 for false advertising, since the box cover refers to Cameron as a "her." At the time, though, I was just excited that somebody cared enough about the female market to create such an appealing movie. I wasn't bothered that it was probably a male.

I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong about Cameron.

I don't know if she's still active, but former porn actress Bionca directed quite a few movies in the nineties.

Also the former actress Dolly Buster is a director for DBM (Dino's Blue Movies) , her husband's (Dino Baumberger) studio.

Isn't it about time that Tricia started to direct as well?
If Tricia is reading this, I know you are pretty busy with the DVDs at Evil Angel, but, don't you never feel the urge to do/create your own project from start to finish?

A young proto-feminist Euro (Danish I think) company called Puzzy Power has hired amazing female director Lisbeth Lynghoff to helm "La prison des sévices" ("Pink Prison" is I think the working worldwide title),a movie produced by groundbreaking Dogma director Lars Von Trier ("Dancer in the Dark" with Bjork). It doesn't narrow the female sexual psyche to lesbian or foreplay. Gorgeous Katja Kean plays a reporter who infiltrates an all-male prison, gives head to a manacled captive, watches another one masturbate, gets rough sex from Alberto Ray, fantasizes about being groped by 3 studs in a collective shower, and gets a lickfest from black cook Mr Marcus.
It's REALLY hot, never apologizes for being a porno movie, dares some risqué shots (notably a short simulated gay scene), and falls neither into the softporn or gonzo extremes. It's different, though if you'd have to categorize it, I would say Michael Raven meets Nic Cramer. My 2002 favourite, directed by a woman to boot.

i should be so lucky, lucky lucky lucky

Welcome Ty!
I'm still waiting for a female director that will break out of the pack and take risks. Give us something new, and it doesn't have to be romantic necessarily. Most studios think that just because there's some asinine storyline, it will be appealing to women too. I don't know if you're a male or female, but one of my biggest complaints is the lack of appealing male talent.

Most female directors still have to cater to a largely male audience, so while there's certain touches here and there that I like, none of them really standout in my opinion, as being better or worse than males. What I hate is someone trying to mislead the public concerning their gender, if indeed that was Robert Herrera. That insults people's intelligence.

Tricia writes:

Damn girl, I wish I knew how to edit!!!

A gay masturbation movie? Hmmm, I think I'll pass this one.

Why did you shoot this kind of movie? I hope you did it because that kind of stuff turns YOU on. That is the only reason why a director should make porn and that is why I think the Evil Empire has been so successful. I hope that you will follow the tradition at Evil Angel and shoot the kind of movies you would like to see. Never mind the comments from old fashioned hetero fans like me.

I hope you do find the time to finally edit it. I know editing can be a real pain in the ass and can take forever to finish. However, for me personally, it is the most rewarding phase of the making of a video. I know I liked editing my images of a Cesarian operation a lot more than shooting the images themselves. It was much funnier seeing the husband pass out on tape during the editing than see him pass out in reality during the shooting. And that was even before the operation itself had started. The operation itself was more like something out of a David Cronenberg film. A David Cronenberg film from the 70s that is.

I read all your opinions here regarding female directors, although I had expressed an interest in viewing films directed, filmed and edited by women mainly because something that arouses and expressed female perspective to sex as appealing to me at the same time I cannot escape the fact its the real hardcore sex and not the romantic queasy stuff that appeals to me. For instant I cant stand the Candida Royale stuff because to me they arent porn just a few added semi hard scenes, there is no high octane high adrenaline stuff. I think Dumblonde had a points here that women directors so far hadnt really tried anything new and any directors male or female could churn out something with bits of romance and call it a women's film, and it is true that there is largely a male audience since most men like watching hard porn most of the time while only some women like watching hard porn some of the time (sorry for generalising) so while its a good idea to always try something new its important not to alienate the interests of the majority otherwise you would lose money. Is female directed films better than male? I wouldnt say so and given that there are more male directors with more experience in directing, and this is also true in mainstream films, I would say that best directors around are men. Of course in porn there are also talented female directors and very poor male counterparts, but porn at least for me is also about appeal so having a very good porn directed and filmed by women would instantly appeal to me more since its through her direction and images from what she is seeing that is being communicated to me, its a like a woman showing me what she likes to do and see sexually and it gives me the buzz.

Jewel De'Nyle of Platinum X Pictures AND Kat Slater of Hustler

Jewel shoots harder sex perhaps, and Kat shoots more romantic/woman's view sex that still has the good edge hardcore needs.

Belladonna, who has really grown from her Bellas Perversions line (1 & 2 were good lesbian videos; 3 was a great lesbian film with several guy/girl hardcore scenes as well). I am VERY anxious to see her new film Evil Pink from Evil Angel this week.

Aurora Snow is directing now. She's a smart chick with an education in theater so she might take to directing feature porn like a duck to water.

Aurora Snow belongs infront of the camera, not behind it.

Btw, Lizzy Borden is my favorite female director, I like the way she goes over the edge all the time!

Thanks Tricia for mentioning me. Bob I couldn't agree with you more!! Joey Wilson is a man that I have incredible respect for. He's all about the business-no bullshit. Not running arond trying to fuck every girl he sees-he does his extremely hard job as head of Metro better than anyone has.He is completely refreshing, and if he wasn't running Metro, I don't think I'd want to be a Metro contractgirl/director(by the way I have shot(directed) 6 movies in the past three months for Metro's new line called Fusxion)

you are corrected sir :) , Joey Wilson did not discover me. Joey and I started and ran the Rosebud office when Pleasure Productions bought them out. Joey was more of a salesperson there, and I shot all of the movies, I had been working for Pleasure Productions for 3 years prior to the Rosebud acquisition and Joey coming on board, Joey came from a feature backround, i'd like to think I may have educated him a little about gonzo. A great guy for sure though.
(hopefully too many jules jordan clones wont come out of metro though)

I agree with Jules Jordan. I don't see how you can say Joey Wilson has an eye for talent. His tenure with Metro, he has only signed one "great" director in Pat Myne. They have lost "great" directors with Mike Quasar and Skeeter leaving. Britney Foster still has to prove her numbers and I don't think she has. So I would say Joey made one safe bet pick out of his Metro tenure. He hasn't found a new hot directors like Guy Capo, Johnni Darko, or Justin Slayer.

Jewel,

You are a great role model for girls to use as they plan their careers. I have learned a lot by looking at what you did and think you absolutely kick ass. I will email you about shooting a Jewel movie - that would be (not to be corny, but it is true) a dream come true. :)

I wasn't sure if you were back from Australia yet. I am a little jealous of how much time you have spent in my home country lately!!!

Guy Capo, Johnni Darko, and Justin Slayer were all "available" at some point during Joey Wilson's tenure at Metro. You are right about Bridgette being a Skeeter clone. I am sure the Kerkove's will use the same production crew and formula. Signing directors is not that hard look ar Evil Angel, Red Light and Platinum X they are full of good directors. I would say Stagliano, Dion, and Jewel have an "eye for talent" So with all of Metro's coffers they can only come up with two good gonzo directors? Come on Joey Wilson is OVERRATED and UNDISSERVING.
