Has the naked truth come out? A new study has concluded that female porn stars are just as psychologically healthy or even healthier than other women.
The latest edition of the Journal of Sex Research has challenged the stereotype that porn actresses have poor self-images and a history of sexual abuse. A report suggests that porn stars have higher self-esteem, a better quality of life and body image, and are more spiritual than their non-adult entertainment counterparts.
Researchers at Pennsylvania's Shippensburg University, Texas Woman’s University and the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation compared 177 porn actresses to a sample of women matched on age, ethnicity, and marital status. Comparisons were based on sexual behaviors and attitudes, self-esteem, quality of life and drug use. Sun News reports that the actresses in the study had all been paid to work on at least one X-rated movie and ranged in age from 18 to 50. Their average career in the industry was 3.5 years.

Results showed that the X-Rated stars were more likely to say they enjoyed sex — no surprise there — but perhaps contrary to popular notions, porn stars weren’t any more likely to have had endured sexual abuse than those in the control group. However, some of the results confirmed popular stereotypes. For example, the actresses reported using more drugs than the control group while they also reported having sex for the first time at a younger age (15) than the control group (17).
"Stereotypes of those involved in adult entertainment have been used to support or condemn the industry and to justify political views on pornography, although the actual characteristics of actresses are unknown because no study on this group of women has been conducted," the report said.
The study has been dismissed by feminist commentator Dawn Foster, however, who says the results have disregarded some of the porn industry's seedier aspects.
"It is dangerous to generalize about a huge industry: women who are successful and in control of their careers in one pocket don't speak for women in the less scrutinized parts," Foster said. "The study's main objective seems to be to prove that not all women in porn are exploited: no one has argued that. But glossing over the exploitative aspects helps no one.

I find from watching interviews with female porn stars.
They have to most vibrant/bubbly personalities. Watch any interview with
rachel roxxx.
She just looks like shes brimming with life.
And it takes my breath away. Its like that with a good amount of other female porn stars.
The women in porn are some of the sweetest women you will ever meet and see.

There's probably some truth to that. I'm always sceptical about how representative surveys are when the participants are self selecting. For example, I doubt that the average porn performer has a career in the industry as long as 3.5 years.
But it's ironic seeing feminists completely dismiss this study when so many of them quote ludicrous Shelley Lubben statistics (like the average life expectancy of a porn star being 37.43 years) as "the truth about porn", use irrelevant Melissa Farley street prostitution studies to argue that most porn performers are PTSD suffering junkies, and twist ambiguous brain-scan research into proof that porn causes rape and domestic violence.
By the standard of the evidence many feminists use to push their agenda, all the criticisms of this study are minor little nitpicks.

Well, when i think about, it does make sense. I mean, the porn industry has changed a lot since the '70's and '80's as well as the general way of life nowadays compared to back in the '70's when all these stereotypes were being thrown around. Women today in general are more in tune with their bodies, eat healthier and just live healthier lives in general then 30 years ago. The porn industry itself holds women higher than it used to. 30 years ago the men were the 'legends' of porn and women wanted to work with them, now it seems to be the other way around, how many male actors are considered that way nowadays? Women can really make a great living doing this without having to bow down to the male as much as they used to. Maybe I am way off base, but that is how i see it...so in that way, the study makes good sense.

Wow, they interviewed a total of 177 people out of thousands and thousands of porn performers. Hell, 177 would barely cover the # of Nikki's that have done porn. Doesn't sound like they did an indepth study. I'd be curious to see how they categorized Goddess Rachel Oberlin having anal at 11 with a 20 year old neighbor.

^It's an adequate sample size, so long as the sample is properly selected -- unfortunately, a nearly impossible condition to meet.

By the standard of this kind of research that's a decent sample size.
Look at some of the moral panics that have influenced government policy and brought about new legislation, you'll find they're often based on studies that are far smaller and more obviously flawed.

I suppose getting paid to fuck on video might boost one's self-esteem.

Only if the total porn pool was between 750-1000 would 177 be adequate. And agreed, impossible to meet. I tend to discount this whole study, not so much for content, but claims. They say they interview 177 porn stars. Really???? Prove it. Where'd they find all the people to interview? What are the parameters they are working with in regards to being a star? I could go on and on about the shortcomings of this so called study, but this a porn site, not a research methodology site.

There is no real way to know ahead of time what an adequate sample size would be for a statistical study. In essence, you need to have some sense of the variation within the population at large and a sense of how big the difference between the groups might be. (And also how confident you want to be in your results. In the social sciences, it's typically OK if there is a 5% chance that you are just looking at random differences between the two sample groups that don't reflect differences in the underlying population. In biology 1% is the norm, and in physics, it's sometimes 1/1,000,000. This is called 5-sigma, and it was the level of confidence used last July when "a signal consistent with a Higg's mechanism" was detected.)
Normally, when researchers are doing a statistical study, they start with a pilot study that allows them to estimate variability in the whole population and the difference between the study populations, and this allows them to figure out how large a sample they need to survey.
The size of the larger population isn't important. Let's assume for a second that we are discussing two populations-- White Americans from rural regions of the old Confederacy, and Black Americans from the urban North. Both of these populations represent millions of people.
It is entirely likely that you could determine with a fairly high degree of confidence that northern urban Blacks were more likely to vote for Obama than rural Southern Whites by surveying as few as twenty randomly selected members of each population.

^I'm an educated man and the only thing that I took away from whatever that was is that Southern Whites aren't going to vote for a black President and Northern Blacks are. It doesn't take a genius the figure that one out. It's more like "Really? No shit Sherlock!"

All good questions, if the study is available we could find out, but the real reason you're asking those questions is because you don't believe their findings. If they found that the majority had been sexually abused and were miserable I doubt you'd be such a doubting thomas.

Well any problems with the study aside, and I have heard what I think are some valid issues brought up, I definitely can see how at least with the more popular women, being in porn could be a pretty big self esteem boost.
Even among woman who had it pretty great growing up, you go from being a fairly anonymous person to having thousands and thousands of men( and a good amount of women too) telling you how bad they want to fuck you, how amazing/gorgeous you are and in general just drooling all over you. A good amount of money and other material perks don't hurt either. I imagine the boost is even more dramatic among some of the women who actually did have some serious problems growing up, from being poor or being abused in whatever way all the time, to having some money and having people almost worship you almost certainly helps some of these girls self esteem an awful lot, assuming they know how to handle it.
It makes me wonder if that effect has gotten even bigger over the years with the progression of the internet and especially now with social media. Sure, they take plenty of shit on there from some people for being a pornstar slut/whore or whatever, but those comments are likely way outnumbered by all the positive comments from people who are drooling every time they post a pic or mention a new scene or whatever else. That kind of direct interaction with a lot of people who are positive about their careers probably helps temper the effects of a lot of normal negative things they hear about their career.
I do wonder though since with a few exceptions porn is generally a fairly short career, if some women have trouble with the adjustment after they're done performing and the people drooling over them go away or at least are heard from less, and the money and lifestyle perks are gone.
You regularly hear from professional athletes, another in general fairly short career, about how hard the adjustment is when they retire. On one day they making a lot of money and are a tough competitor out on the field/court/rink/whatever else with thousands of people in the stands cheering for them, or at least caring about them enough to boo, to the next just being some guy/girl sitting on a couch with no current job. Not the same situation of course but I see some similarities. Some of the big differences of course are that for a lot of the athletes they have millions of dollars to help make the adjustment, and the fact that their career can often lead directly into other fairly lucrative careers, both things that aren't generally offered by a career in porn.

the whole "higher self esteem" issue doesn't sit well with me.
I think many girls in every walk of life tie their self esteem into their looks (many guys do as well btw)
So if a girl thinks she is pretty enough that other people would want to watch them have sex on camera in the first place, she probably thinks pretty highly of herself.
also lets not forget how easily pornstars lie...oh yes they all just LOVE the taste of cum and they ALL feel total ecstasy from having their nipples sucked. It's part of their job to tell the world they love what they do, whereas someone working at a job as a secretary or post office of DMV or whatever will be more honest about not liking their job if that is the truth.

Actually Dawn Foster's colleague at the Guardian Newspaper, Gail Dines, pretty much argues this ad nauseum.
