I posted the below in another thread:
"Although I'm sure that there are many performers yet to come who will develop strong fan bases and have long careers, I think it's pretty difficult for any female performer to have a significant and lasting impact on the business these days. Just about everything that can be done sexually has been done, so there aren't many new trails to blaze in that regard. It doesn't seem likely that there will be any more Teri Weigels from the world of Playboy, and even less likely that any other minor or major celebrities will take their careers down the road to Porn Valley -- outside of the occasional "accidentally" or "malevolently" (yeah right) released sex tape.
"Without an understanding of what you mean by "impact," I fear that what most people will respond with are the names of women whose popularity rose pretty quickly and then who left the business leaving a good many fans still hungry for more. Keri Sable and Tiffany Rayne definitely fit in that regard."
That got me to thinking about the question of impact. Which female performers have had the greatest impact, and how have they had that impact? I'm not just inquiring about performers who have been popular or who have had long careers, not just the hall-of-famers, but those whose performances have had a true impact on the industry.
Off the top of my head:
Marilyn Chambers -- The Ivory Snow girl and original girl-next-door.
Debi Diamond -- The original Gang Bang Girl.
Annabelle Chong -- Certainly contributed the the evolution of "freak-show porn."
Porn is so populated by flavors of the month, and the girls and what they do seem at times to be so interchangeable, that I'm having a hard time coming up with more. Anyone else care to contribute?

Candy Samples
Uschi Digart
Linda Lovelace
Seka
Vanessa Del Rio
Sharon Mitchell
Nina Hartley
Shauna Grant
Traci Lords
Ginger Lynn
Christy Canyon
Ashlyn Gere
Jenna Jameson
That's a few right off the top of my head. I know I am missing many. I feel those named actually had a large impact on the industry.

It blindingly obvious i kno, but surely Jenna Haze deserves a mention for being around throughout the time in which gonzo has become as popular as it is today?

Ginger Lynn - Ginger's impact on the industry is partly due to timing. At the height of her popularity, porn was coming home to VCR's all over America. Neighborhood video rental shops were popping up all over the nation, many with a back room for adults only. Ginger existed at a time of beauties (Christy Canyon, Angel, Traci Lords, Stacey Donovan, etc.,), but she was the top actress rented and sold and outlasted the lot of them. In addition, she was the only one of the TRUE beauties that was all access. Stars like Christy Canyon would not do b/b/g scenes let alone anal. Meanwhile, Ginger was having all three orifices filled at the same time. The combination of her girl-next-door-beauty, willingness to perform any sex act and popularity in the new VCR era ensures her true impact on the industry.
Kay Parker - Kay Parker's impact on the industry is that as the first true MILF. In 1977, she entered the business in her mid-30's. While she was in some excellent movies (Sex World, V the Hot One, Downstairs/Upstairs, etc.,) her real impact came in the movie Taboo where she was the MILF of all MILF's. She fucks her oldest son in Taboo, his best friend in Taboo 2 and her youngest son in Taboo 3. Meanwhile, she having trysts with Juliet "Aunt Peg" Anderson (yet another of the original MILFs, yet not as MILF-y as Kay Parker), her oldest son's best friends Mom (Honey Wilder), etc., She performed into the mid-1980's almost always playing the ultimate MILF, as in 1983's "Private Teacher"
Linda Lovelace - Linda Lovelace's brief and controversial career in porn impacted the industry on two fronts. First, she starred in the most successful adult movie ever made. "Deep Throat" has reportedly earned well in excess of $600 million since it's 1972 release. That movie was important because it brought recognition to the adult industry for an act - the act of deep throating. People came out of the woodwork to see this and it brought non-'pervs' to adult theater's to see what the fuss was about (for more, see the 2005 NC-17 documentary "Inside Deep Throat"), setting off issues involving the first amendment, the arrest of Harry Reems for his part in the film and the creation of a mega-star in Linda Lovelace. Though there is some debate, many argue this film started the Golden Age of Pornography that ran until the Traci Lords scandal broke in 1986.
The other reason Linda Lovelace impacted the industry is that she eventually became a spokeswoman for the anti-pornography movement making the famous statement, “When you see the movie Deep Throat, you are watching me being raped. It is a crime that movie is still showing; there was a gun to my head the entire time.” As "Deep Throat" was the best selling adult movie ever made and she was the star, she became the first pornSTAR to speak out against the industry.
Belladonna - Belladonna's impact on the industry is rooted in the fact that she took control of her career and starred in her own movies which pushed the boundries of rough sex. It became more difficult for people who accused men of taking advantage of women when Belladonna was in charge of the tone, pace and limits of the movie. No female in the history of porn has embraced the acts that define Belladonna's dance-card. Many are now copying what she has done, but she blazed the trail.

well I'd have to put Jenna Jameson up there for showing how high one can go income-wise
and also Traci Lords and Cheyenne Silver for keeping the 'I can crossover to mainstream' candle lit

Taylor St. Claire for sure. She revolutionized extreme porn and was the most beautiful woman ever to be degraded. She was always enthusiastic and having fun in her scenes and she was stunning to look at, to watch and to listen to. She is also very intelligent and I think rough porn took off really after her appearances in some fucked up movies. She is the Goddess of Porn and really is a modern day Aphrodite. I know I fall in love with her every time I see her gorgeous face and beautiful green eyes. Obviously, Jenna Jameson has a huge impact...others would be Amy Reid, Audrey Bitoni, Hillary Scott, Jenna Haze, Jewel Denyle, Katin, Lizzy Borden, Penny Flame, Sasha Grey, Sativa Rose, Stacy Valentine and Stormy Daniels. I am no historian but I feel that these are some of the girls who have made a huge impact in porn and have legions of fans. Some have made more of an impact in the mainstream world and others have made a difference in the production of porn. I think I've named some of the most influential stars but I am sure I'm missing a few and some on my list are on their probably because of my own personal preference. Audrey Bitoni, on second thought, hasn't made a huge impact but on me personally she has. One more thing...Cassandra Calogera...making an impact already...wow I love her!

Great list from Bigfoot, but what about Marilyn Chambers? She starred in the second most famous porno of all time, Behind the Green Door (just behind Deep Throat) and in one of the biggest selling porn videos of all time, Insatiable.
In addition she was one of the most beautiful women to ever do porn at that (or any) time, she had the mainstream connection as the Ivory Soap girl, and became the personification of the 'porn star' icon for years, until Ginger came along.

There is a vast difference between women you think are hot and women who have changed the trajectory of this business. Amy Reid, Penny Flame, etc. nice bodies/great performers but wont be remembered in say 10 years. Impact performers are really once in a generation if that and just have nice boobs doesnt make you that type of performer.

Okay perhaps I am biased but I will say - Vanessa Blue.
Only 1 of really 2 active black female directors - Current Director for Adam & Eve
Won an AVN Award for Directing
Former Contract Director for Hustler
Has her own toy line with TopCo
Performer for just less than 10 years - an accomplishment all by itself
Director for the past 5
Edits her own movies
Shoots stills for her websites and movies
Composes music for her movies
Webmaster of her own websites
Co-Host on Playboy TV for 2 years
Host of Private Calls and now Co-Host on Night Calls Playboy Radio
Numerous other mainstream press - ie., Interviewed 50 Cent for Rolling Stone
I have personally observed her fan base. She is recognized everywhere we go and always has fans standing in line at my booths at AVN and Erotica-LA.
While her impact might not be felt across the industry, I know it has been felt by other female performers, especially other black female performers.
Does that fit what you were looking for ?
Just my bias 2 cent opinion,
Michael

I have to add Kascha. If I look at older german magazines, not only focused on porn, she received a big media coverage.
She had no sex with other men, only with her husband Francois. Only a little lesbian sex with other women, but no harder scenes.
German video veterans told me, that even a few female customers asked for her movies, usually not interested in porn. The weak stories were a turn down ( like the third rate copy of Miami Vice ).

Bingo. Ditto, I think, for most of the performers mentioned so far. I'd like to think, for example, that Shauna Grant, with her damn-near-perfect body, for-sure-perfect breasts, and high-school-prom-queen face, was an impact performer. But thinking about it objectively, she probably wasn't. And, while Ashlyn Gere is another all-time favorite, deserving of Hall of Fame status, and the first porn star about whom, I remember thinking, "Wow, SHE just fucked HIM!", I'm not suure that the term "lasting impact" would apply to her.
Teri Weigel might be said to have had a lasting impact, being the first Playmate to do hardcore after being in Payboy, but the fact that she's the only one so far makes her more of an aberration than a trend-setter.
I'd agree with Nina Hartley and Sharon Mitchell (whom I never undertood the attraction of when she was a performer), but I'd say their greatest impact has come off the screen.
Some performers may have had an impact more for what they didn't do than for what they did. Off the top of my head, Asia Carrera and Charmane Starr have shown that it's still possible to have long and successful careers without having to have your asshole torn up three times a week and blowing half the California prison population simultaneously.
"Impact," at least for purposes of this thread, is more than just having a good body, turning in godd performances, or developing a large fan base.

Yep, those early Marilyn Chambers flixxx landed her enough recognition so that she got the lead roll in Cronenberg's mainstream horror film, Rabid, in 1977. I've never seen it but it's got **1/2 in one of those Leonard Maltin Movie Guides. Also, I am curious as to how many women watched Insatiable back in the day?---B0B, The Film Snob

I couldn't disagree any further with Lampard. Amy Reid and Penny Flame will for sure be remembered in 10 years. They are already porn legends...Penny more than Amy but they both have definitely made a strong impact. Lampard please provide your list of girls you feel have made a greater impact because I am interested in what you think here.

I considered Marilyn Chambers for my list but I go back and forth. Being the "original" doesn't actually have as big an impact as doing something original. That MC was the original girl-next-door, doesn't mean that her very slim portfolio was significant enough to merit a place on the Mount Rushmore of porn innovators.
Just think about it. ACT ONE of her career is essentially the two or three movies made by the Mitchell Brothers. Other than 1973's Behind the Green Door and 1972's Ressurection of Eve, can you name another film she starred in during the 1970's? Did she do another film in the 1970's with someone other than the Mitchell Brothers? There was "Inside Marilyn Chambers" but that was old footage, BTS and interviews. I'm a porn trivia guy and I can't even think of another MC film from the 1970's. I think the lasting impact here should be credited to those Bothers Mitchell and the standard they set in adult film-making and not to the woman who starred in these movies.
ACT TWO of her career, the 1980's, are essentially the three or four films directed by Godfrey Daniels between 1980 and 1982 (Insatiable, Charli and Up & Coming). Is there real lasting impact with these movies? Insatiable kad a few highlights that everyone points to - MC's sleek, shaved pussy, but that wasn't the 1st time porn showed a shaved muff (or is it muff in the buff? or Buff Muff?). Also, Insatiable showed slender, buff MC taking John Holmes in all three holes. Of those, what is remembered is his monster third leg going balls deep in her ass. Impressive, but John never truly got 100% wood and while it's a sight to see a large cock dissappear in a small ass, people forget that MC wasnot tiny small - thin, yes, but still 5'7" - all 4'11" of Chiquita Lopez truly took Mandingo balls deep in Up Your Ass #23 - one of countless examples of large going into small as many women smaller than 5'7" have taken larger and thicker cocks in the ass. Perhaps my view is a tad skewed because, to be honest, I found Insatiable to be too arty for me. I never "got it" or considered it to be the classic that many porn reviewers claim (then again, I think "Night Trips" [AVN's #1 movie of all time] is a snoozefest as well).
ACT THREE - she posed in many men's mag's and had an advice column in one of them - she made many soft-core movies for cable late night. Lasting Impact? How many of her Skinemax ,ovies do you remember by name? Exactly.
ACT FOUR- thanks to director Veronica Hart, MC followed Ginger Lynn back for a last shot at porn significance in the late 1990's with VCA (Still Insatiable, Dark Chambers, and the excellent Edge Play - my favorite MC movie). These are just footnotes in the history of porn, while Ginger Lynn's second porn act producted brilliant and more noteworthy features (Torn, White Lightening, Taken, New Wave Nookers 6, [the brilliant] Sunset Stripped, Love and Bullets, etc.,)
So there are chapters of her adult career - did they really have an impact on the industry that ranks her among the giants? I'm not sure - I keep going back and forth. Due to her accomplishments, the status she has attained throughout her career and the timing of the things she did, I'd probably put her in the second tier.

I'll throw out names that have more of an impact in recent years...
Cytherea "Squirting" in porn has always been around but she took it to new hieghts and ushered in a ton "squirting" movies and girls that are still around and still seem to be going strong.
Vicky Vette "MILFs" and older women porn is nothing new but Vicky was one of the first great looking MILFs that caused the porn companies to start casting younger and hotter "older women" in movies. Before Vicky most of the "Milf/older women" porn consisted of old porn women that didn't look so hot and looked closer to granny ages.
Katja Kassin Katja came in at just the right time to bring more attention to big bubble butt white girl movies. For awhile Katja was the bubble butt box cover girl in porn. The fact that she also did anal and IR made her even more of a star with her large crossover fanbase. Katja helped pave the way for girls like Naomi and Brianna love.
Gianna With her beautiful big natural breasts on a sleek frame, good looks and great performances Gianna (along with Brandy Taylore early on) got guys excited about big natural boobs again in a big way. Before Gianna many natural big boob movies seemed to consist of mostly heavier women that usually put on very "tame" performances and rarely crossed over to the "harder" movies. Gianna became a box cover darling and gave big boob movies a much needed boost. Her big breasts, great body and high energy performances made her the big boob girl of the porn biz.
Ava Devine Ava raised the bar when it came to "hardcore" over the top sex. There were a few others that might have been just as "hardcore" as Ava but none seem look as good or enjoy it as much as Ava.
Belladonna Not only was Belladonna one of the nastiest (in a good way) girls ever in porn she is fearless and experimental. Belladonna pushes the envelope and always tries to give fans new and exciting stuff. No one does "freak" in such a sexy way as Belladonna.

I wouldn't be a loyal Shayla LaVeaux fan (probably her number one fan) if I didn't put in a plug for her here.
She may not have the greatest impact in the industry but she sure has had an impact on me, most of her performances seem real in that she is really enjoying herself in both getting herself off and her partners as well. I don't think you can say that about many stars.
Needless to say that I end each porn viewing day watching some of her stuff and stroking vigorously to it. My biggest fantasy is for me to be in a room with Shayla and watching her perform with as many guys and/or girls as she would want to, in other words, a virtual sex feast for her.
That is how Shayla affects me, I consider that a great tribute to her, anyone else feel that way about her or have a particular star that they are as wrapped up in as I am in her.

I again suggest that some confuse impact with popularity or longevity. I remember Victoria Paris and Tamara Lee; Kacey still has a lot of fans; Monica Sweetheart and Aurora Snow are still going strong, each having careers approaching a decade in length. But I don't see any of them as making an impact on the industry the way some of the otehrs discussed in this thread here. Ditto your examples, Penny and Amy.

So my vote goes to Seka. Simply because she could have been a mainstream actress or a model with her looks, but decided that she wanted to do porn. She gave porn a kind of credibility with that decision. The business must have had something to offer when a woman like Seka rather wanted to do porn, since she had alot going for her for a Hollywood movie or TV career. And she brought her qualities into her scenes, especially the fact that she was drop dead gorgeous in her "platinum princess" years.

She also defined the wearing-a-silk-scarf-on-the-neck-tied-to-the-side look for a generation. She get out of the tub, sensously dry off and immediately put on the silk neck scarf-

Wasn't that pretty much a trademark of the original Swedish Erotica series? Seka was in so many of them, she may well considered the definitive scarf-wearer of her generation.
As far as impact goes, she was probably one of the first major porn stars, and her beauty was undeniavle. I'd include her on the "impact" list.

Jenna Jameson.
The woman's been a House Hold Name for at least 10 years now.
The only other Girl non-porn enthusiests could ever name would be 1 Ms. Tracy Lords.
She was really the 1st Star to debunk the idea that Porn Girls work for nothing, and probably the 1st to ever become a Millionaire.(Houston And Tera Patrick would soon follow)
a small sampling of her Bio:
"in 1995, Wicked Pictures, a then small pornographic film production company, signed her to an exclusive contract.
The contract earned Jameson US$6,000 for each of eight movies in her first year.[
By 2001, Jameson earned $60,000 for a day and a half of filming a single DVD, and $8,000 per night dancing at strip clubs. She tried to restrict herself to five films per year and two weeks of dancing per month. Her husband Jay Grdina has said that she earned as much as $25,000 per night dancing."
Everyone knows she's the only Porn Star in history ever to have a Book on the best sellers list. She's also appeared in more than a few non-sex film movies (most recently "Zombie Strippers)
With a generous amount of On-Air Time with Howard Stern, she was very much responsible for renewed interest in Sex Films; especially as everything moved to DVD.
Although in no way a HouseHold name, the only other woman I can remember who caused an absolute sensation was Jasmine St. Claire. Again, thanks in no small part to Howard Stern, Jasmine stunned the world with her spectacular looks and her willingness to let 250 fans(though, this number is contested) experience all of her 3 inputs. As opposed to Jenna's positive fame, St.Claire's seemed somewhat based in the idea that such a lovely girl should be doing better for herself.

Nina Hartley: For showing that female pornstars can have longevity.
Traci Lords, Ginger Lynn and Jenna Jameson: For being able to crossover into mainstream.
Kym Wilde and Chanta Rose: Helped make the S&M website Kink.com successful.
Jill Kelly: For showing that a female pornstar can direct porn and run a successful (at least it was at the beginning ) porn company.
Jewel DeNyle: An AVN performer of the year who could do a great job at both features and gonzo. Along with being an amazing performer, she became successful at directing, producing and co-owning Platinum X (which later merged with Red Light District). Jewel helped run a company which was actually able to compete with the legendary Evil Angel. Plus, she's my favourite of all-time.
Belladonna: Another successful and popular performer who's known all over the world and has been in well known porn movies (like Fashionistas, etc.). She has also become a successful director.

I can't, but can anyone name a film that Linda Lovelace did besides Deepthroat. Both of those films are historically important classics. As I'm sure you remember, in the 70s/80s the only pornos your average person would ever admit having seen were Deepthroat and Behind the Green Door.
Yes, Insatiable is one of the highest selling pornos ever, it cemented video as the new format and is thought to have sold to a large degree to the 'couples' market that video found, and so is one of the first pornos to have been widely viewed by women. Charli also happens to be a great little film.

Honestly, I can only think of three.
1) Linda Lovelace - The first pornstar.
2) Savannah - The first crossover. She was porn to the "outside" world.
3) Danni Ashe - The first porn business woman/Empire Builder (granted she never did b/g but if you want you sub in Jenna Jameson if you rather)
Of course, these are all utterly subjective especially my second pick. I choose Savannah just because she was the first woman of porn I saw outside of porn. She was dating Hollywood types/rockstars and getting mentions in "mainstream" media outlets (even before her tragic death). Women like Alisha Klass, Janine, etc would follow.

Absolutely no question: Traci Lords.
Because you didn't ask for who affected the industry in a GOOD way. No single porn actress has *ever* stirred up the government, the media, and the do-gooders like Traci did. The Meese Commission, that 2257 paperwork crap and all the rest - her doing.
There are many, many people I like better. But none have ever approached the impact of the disingenuous Ms. Lords.

I think that is exagerating things quite a bit. The election of Reagan and rise of the Christian Right under him were the real reasons for the Meese Commission. Tracy could've never been born and they would've still been trying to shut down porn in the 80s.

I'll give something of a point: I exaggerated for rhetorical effect. Traci may not have been the whole story, given the admittedly regressive era you mention.
But if Reagan's Rethugs started a fire to burn books (and videos) with, Traci's story gave 'em lots of dynamite to throw on it: "Save our KIDDIES!!!" The effects of that one reverberated well on into the '90's.
Not bad for a little working girl from Ohio, I still say.

I have to chuckle a bit when I read some of the names mentioned. The girls being named here are supposed to be ones that had a real impact on the industry but really some of the girls some of you are naming are just simply girls you personally like for whatever reason and really haven't had any real impact on the biz in any way shape or form.
I buy AVN magazine every month, spend time doing searches on RAME.net (and other sites), used to regularly go to the AVN/AEE conventions, and I buy and rent porn fairly regularly and there are names being thrown out here that I've never heard of before or have heard the name (only from this board) and don't have any idea who they are. And apparently some of these girls are still around.
I don't claim to be Mr Porn Expert but it would seem that if someone had or has an impact in porn at the very least they should be well known to most people if they're a performer in front of the camera.

Off the top of my head:
1. Marilyn Chambers: For the things bigfoot listed. Not only was she the first "girl next door" in porn, she remained that for many years and was guaranteed box office. Her career stayed relevent well into the satellite age. She was a groundbreaker in many ways. I agree with bigfoot that not all the films she did were all that good, but Door and Insatiable are still two classic must-sees--and they were filmed more than a decade apart. How many female stars can claim that? Plus she was the first star where things could be sold just because her name was on them.
2. Traci Lords: For the good--the first real breakout star of the video age, one of the first female stars to take an assertive sexual role on screen and one of the two stars who made having a VCR in the bedroom acceptable. The bad: That whole fake-ID thing pretty much covers it.
3. Ginger Lynn: The other girl who made having a VCR more than just family entertainment. Her sales were picking up right when the whole Traci Lords scandal hit and kept going. Also one of the first big stars to do anal and IR on the front of her career, showing there were markets and acceptability for both.

Linda Lovelace, no question about it. She brought porn to the mainstream and really got the business started. I don't know anyone in the biz who would dispute this.

I'm from the internet generation so the only ones i can think of are.
Tawnee Stone. All of the 18-19 cute girl next door type sites are modeled after that one. I guess i should say Lightspeed's websites.
Wifey, Heather(ideepthorat) and Dawn's Place. I dont know which one came first so i couldnt give credit to one. They started the hot amateur housewife websites.

That scarf thing was not just a Seka thing. I just watched Sweidsh Erotic clip last night with John Holmes and a hot brunette of the era (can't remember her name) who had one on too.

Jenna is very important, simply because she was "hottest" at the time when "everyone" began watching porn because of the internet. Also, as mentioned earlier, the first girls to have their own amateur sites, especially Wifey. Wifey was the one who introduced me to amateur porn which was a whole new phenomenon (at least at this magnitude).
