Does anyone have any experience financing a porn production? What are the costs and are the current day returns on the footage worth the cost? I seems like porn would be a good investment vehicle but the over supply with the internet is definitely an issue...

<s>It's such a "great investment vehicle" that most companies are shells of their former selves, or have already given up and sold out to Manwin, and many performers are spending more time being hookers or groveling for money on webcams than they are shooting movies.</s>
How much do you have to invest?

It All depends on the kind of quality you would like to make. if you just want a clip with sex scene, people are doing custom videos for you under 400 USD with one sex scene, it will not be exclusive to you and they can sell it as well.for exclusive content they will make it under 800 USD with one sex scene in it.
if you want to make a full length feature film with dress, sets designing it will cost alot more and more efforts , may be 5000 USD . If you want any famous pornstar to work in the movie then may be you end up paying 1000 USD extra. These days there are too many girls and boys working in porn trying to earn the living, so they will work on relatively cheaper rates.
if you want to include special effects, do big bang publicity advertising and controlling it from going it on to shares you can add easily 10,000 USD plus more in it. Graphics and special effects add to the cost as it is time consuming job and takes efforts in doing it. It depends on the kind of quality you want to make. with softwares available in special effects industry it is easier to do many things these days. even if you dont have a high quality camera and you have a handycam, you can still make HD Quality movies and give them a hollywood movie look with some color corrections.special effects and 3D Softwares can do many things for you for which people end up paying huge amount of money.
If you want to make a 3D Movie then cheapest option is you need to shoot with two camera's at different angles on tripod and then use editing software to merge in a way that you can create a depth required to get the effect of 3D.If you ask someone in market for 3D Movies, they will give you sky high rates. so it all depends on the quality you want to make.
Not many production studios like to take the risk these days of creating a full length feature as they are worried they will be in loss.many of them shooting hardcore scene clips 18-20 mins length.I miss classic porn of 70's-80's and i hope it will come back soon :).
It all depends on ideas, If you have a new idea something unique and different then there is a big chance that it may be a success. The idea should be sensational and best medicine in this show biz industry to get success is shocks and surprise. if you shock and surprise someone with something which they never expected, you will get people curious about it,its human nature.
I am a big fan of indymogul and the kind of tricks they show you to have the special effects in your movies at a very very low cost but it looks as good as hollywood movies.
So Making a movie is more about passion. If you can learn the 3D Softwares like Poser, you can make your own movie with whatever faces you want in it , you control them how you want them to act and this is the best part of 3D Movies that person making it has a full control on characters.

There's really no money left in content production...
And those that still do have a way to monetize that content in several different ways and even then its difficult to turn a profit.
There's a reason most of the brand name companies have sold out to Manwin.

I don't agree with you that there is no Money left in content production, there is a reason why people still creating content and running the business. If you go onto clips4sale and other clips selling website , content is uploaded every day. Vivid making parodies like Avengers with some good investment.yes i agree that profits shrinked because of piracy and fileshares and some of the porn studios may be doing it just to pay regular bills.you can see the decrease in number of visitors on updowner.com for different porn prodcution companies but i believe there is still a margin for profit , that may be reason why they are shooting content everyday. I feel porn industry has not followed the formula what mainstream hollywood companies could follow. In this file sharing and piracy world the trick what movie makers are using is to create more number of prints, they are not leaving any market even asia and they release the movies dubbed in hindi in India and in Mandarin in China.Movie dubbing doesn't cost much and voice over artists can do it online. Hollywood movie makers giving hard time to bollywood movie makers as well by eating up the market share of bollywood movies, as some of the hollywood releases gets bigger hits then bollywood. same thing bollywood is doing as well, they are releasing bollywood movies with many prints , sometimes dubbed in german for germany and bollywood movies frequently goes onto top 10 in UK.Increasing Coverage helps here.
Mainstream movie makers are doing some big bang publicity for some of the movies which are made on unique ideas or high budget movies.they control the fileshare /piracy for first two months, fill up the money bags quickly and forget about it.so the target is within first two months they should be able to recover the cost of making it and additional revenue, after that whatever comes is bonus.
For Porn Industry, the production studios should use maximum number of sales channels (some research on my thread pornoeconomics), for some of the high budget movies they have to see if they can address the localization issues and cover other region markets (talking about movies here not hardcore clips) . You can see lot of information on thread pornoeconomics on the statistics and what porn production studios can do to get maximum profits.
Unique ideas are also important, if everyone shooting same hardcore clips you may watch and forget about it after few days."One Big Idea is Bigger then a Big Business"

^Maybe I'm wrong but I really don't think so. There was a time not so long ago when most girls shot porn on a weekly basis and many of them shot multiple times a week. When you consider that shooting a 30 minute scene will take many hours then that doesn't leave a lot of time for escorting afterwards. Then there was the abundance of strip clubs always looking for an edge by booking popular porn performers for shows.
These girls needed to do other stuff than just shoot porn so escorting on a day off was not really top on their list and they made enough cash otherwise that it wasn't cecessary. The reality for most girls is that so little porn is shot, strip club are dying so where can they make money that is equivalent or superior to porn except in the escorting business. I know some people equal escorting to shooting porn because both involve having sex for money but I don't.

So how is manwin (a company I know nothing about) managing to dominate in these trying times? Is it such a conglomerate that it can swallow the competition and still squeeze out a profit?
there was a time when sex was seen as a fool proof business.

There is a world of difference between a demand for porn and a demand for porn that a particular studio produces.

If you have seen Demolition Man with Silverster Stallone then you may remember a scene in which Taco Bell is the name of every restaurant because they won the food war. This is basically what manwin has done by helping destroy the other studios with their tube sites. They now thrive because there is very little competition. A decade ago Brazzer would have been an average sized fish in a large ocean of porn but now that this fish is in a small pond then he looks a lot bigger.

Short of the BDSM genre I have to agree with you, pornlaw. The only people I can think of that are making money for sure are Peter Acworth at Kink and the crooks at Manwin/Mansef. I think PD over at Intersec may be doing OK considering he just set up Matt Williams with a building and supplies to start a new website out of Oakland, CA (Intersec is based out of Brooklyn, NY).

The question posted was how much it costs to finance a movie, not about the current problems in industry with shrinking profits...I can understand all this is related but it will be great if people who financed any movie or have any experience in creating movies can give some useful information .

I have financed movies and help create them. My fiance is Vanessa Blue and we released more than a dozen DVDs through Justin Slayer and some of my clients are still releasing DVDs (Will Ryder - Not The Three Stooges XXX). While other clients are trying to maximize profit margins by shooting live, putting the content on a website and then packaging it into DVDs. Other clients shoot exclusively for sites like Clips4Sale. I think I have a good idea on what makes money and what doesnt.
But to answer your question - to finance a movie - Ive seen it done for as little as $5000 and other clients have spent close to six figures.
Here's what I can tell you - the $15,000 to $30,000 range is dead (unless you can shoot a movie that looks like it cost $100,000 for $40,000).
Either you have to make it cheap enough that if you sell 1000 DVDs you can make a few thousand. Few DVD releases sell more than 1000. Most gonzo releases are in the 500-1000 range.
Or you have to produce a movie that is so high-end that you can sell not only domestic DVDS but also the foreign rights as well as sell it to various cable broadcasters and hotel broadcasters to maximize your revenue stream. But even that market is getting tight.
Hustler use to pay $5000-$7,000 for the rights for HustlerTV, now a producer is lucky to get $2000. Most get $1000.00 IF HustlerTV will even buy it.
Manwin and the tubesites killed off the value of content. Manwin doesnt really sell content, they are in the business of traffic. They control much of the porn traffic on the internet because of the tubes. They make money from their traffic not their pornsites.
You cant make money on producing content when as soon as your movie hits the streets its copied and on every tubesite and torrent site.
No one wants to spend money on content when they can get it for free. This applies to mainstream, porn, music and even publishing. I have a client who is a renowned photographer (cover of Newsweek, Time, People ect) who use to author books about the technical aspects of photography. He wont do it anymore since as soon as his book is released its up on torrent sites and he makes nothing but it gets downloaded 40,000 times.
Every Exxxotica I do a seminar on breaking into the adult biz. One of the questions I always ask of the attendees is who pays for porn vs. who visits tube sites.
Each seminar I have between 30-50 people in it. And over the last 3 yrs I have been watching the number of paying attendees steadily decreasing. At Exxxotica Miami out of the 90 or so people in the three different seminars I only had about 10 total that paid for porn. And those were people that spent $40 to get into a porn convention. No one wants to pay to watch...
They will pay to interact though. All the money is in live webcams now. Just one of the big cam companies makes far more in a year than all of the big content studios did combined in their best year. And its not even close.
IMHO porn content production might make a comeback when we do something in the industry that is technologically driven... forget 3D porn, that came and went. Perhaps holographic porn might be interesting...
If a lingerie store in France can do this a consumer application might not be that far off...
Holographic Lingerie Model...

Thanks Pornlaw for sharing information with us. Virtual sex in black background was one of the most successful series. that is the closest possibility of having a feel of having sex with pornstars for viewers.Viewers liked it because of interactive menu's which can be designed in a software called adobe encore. 3D Movies which are released by some porn studio's including the augmented reality video was not a big success for some reasons. They are not able to create a 3D Depth what is required for viewing experience, second problem is they cannot control fileshares for first few months after release. No One has done a 3D Virtual sex with the kind of video's released by My Plaything, if good 3D Depth can be created in those video's it will be a completely different viewing experience.Holographic 360 degrees model programmed to follow your instructions is a future and i am sure it will come out soon in porn world.
It is cheap to create some quality movies these days with help of special effects softwares. If porn porduction studio's can learn to control the file shares and torrents after first few months of release and maximise the sales channels and make sure they use the sales channels where maximum number of people go for buying the stuff, they can make money. When DIRTY MOVIE was released, people on many forums desperately looking for it. if you search on google, you can see people requesting even after three months of release that they cannot find any torrent or fileshare for this movie.some people did put it on share but one company who does excellent job of removing content from shares got it removed quickly. so still you cannot find it on fileshares. If people cannot find it for free, they will buy :).Now many fileshares have been closed down, few of them still active so makes it much easier to control them.Red MILF Productions video's (specially the latest new releases) not easy to find on shares :).On forums who put on shares get warnings immediately for immediate removal.
I have seen many pornstars (e.g. persia monir, tatiana) offering 800 USD Exclusive custom video for viewers which may be 1 hour length with sex scenes. even you can choose the male models and female models you want to have in the video.if it is not exclusive the cost comes down to 400-450 USD. So that may be good enough to give us a idea how much actually the people work on porn these days get paid :) . May be 200-300 USD per shoot ?so with two models in video the cost will be 600 USD and 200 USD profit for production studio :).
One more important thing here is some good new ideas and market coverage what you have mentioned.if the porn production studio's keep on making same hardcore scene what other's are doing regularly then there is a less chance they gain attention of viewers.
